An Unexpected Journey. Another Tie Bomber Build Thread.

I finished my eye chart of parts that make up this model. The maps are great but not so great for tracking what parts you have in hand and how many of each you need.

So for my own sanity.

IMG_3523.jpeg

A little bigger.

If it is yellow then there is something unsure like part number or qty.

The blank column is to try and accommodate parts that are made from one part. Looks I know the Leopold A7 is cut up all over the place. I have it used 7 places but you may only need 6 parts. Things like that.

Anyways…

Now to go check things off.

I created a very similar-looking list for myself to see what parts I had and what I needed.

For the Plastruct parts, you should get VHD-200VG instead of VHE-200VG. Check out my build and you'll see I started with the VHE and it was just too high on the front of the kit -- didn't look right at all! Got confirmation from a few people that it's actually VHD-200VG, a much shallower dish, which fits the profile correctly:

Also, that Morser Karl A28 part, you only need two of them. They're cut in half to make the bomb chute/dropper, one cut slightly wider than the other, as it's not completely symmetrical.

Just two halves like this:

Good preparation, though! Certainly makes the build go smoother and know you've got everything covered!

Wow, you guys (mjhenks, thibkaji) are waaaayyyy more organized than me:eek::eek: I usually look at pics and see which part I need, or need to create... the same day:lol::lol: Cool pic of all the parts laying on that work area:cool::cool::love::love:

So now you put all of this into a bag and add a few drops of CA to taste. Shake it up for 30 seconds, pour out into a 9X13 glass baking pan, and put it into the oven, 350 for half an hour. Voila.

Ha! If only…

That’s how I roll. The Engineer in me states that I cannot proceed until I have a plan…

Thank you for the guidance.

I have my need list finished.

Anyone know what B8 is on the top of the bomb shoot?

IMG_3535.jpeg

My hit list if anyone is interested. I have other parts to trade if you have any spares of these before I go shopping.

Love that there are four TB build threads going on now. Boxcar Bret started a 2024 bomber race…

Wow this is in depth, I use excell for kits in hand and kits needed. Then list in anotes section what parts are used. or if some ome donated parts. So I can return the favor.

B8 is off the Mörser Karl. It’s a small box.

Thank you thibkaji for the ID. Add a part to my needed list.

Got a delivery from Plastruct yesterday. Another try at the cockpit nose and the correct profile bomb tube nose.

Chopping to the right height. I am trying something new for the scribing so I got extras. Using the rotary table

IMG_3564.jpeg

Scribing the cockpit nose is a pain. I failed my first try. I figured I would find another way.

First test was 3D printed. Worked great but the lines are not crisp. Acceptable but I want better. You can see how the lines dive in at the cross. An artifact of the printing. Model up top. Part below in primer.

IMG_3572.jpeg

How can we scribe this on the original plastruct done? How about a 3D printed scribe guide.

IMG_3575.jpeg

First version did not work great. Too tight and was jerky-jerky.

Second version worked great. Accepts the already chopped dome, sets dome up nice and Square and locks the dome in place for easy scribing.

IMG_3574.jpeg

The progression with 3d printed at far right for comparison.

IMG_3570.jpeg

Made a few with perfect verticals lines at perfect 45 degrees. Pleased. (Left scribed. Right 3D printed)

IMG_3572.jpeg

Next the horizontal line. Set up on the lathe. (I know it is already in the picture above…)

IMG_3567.jpeg

Very pleased. Will use this rather than 3D printed.

Next the bomb nose. I also have this 3D printed and it is super nice. I need to make a few adjustments (bottom too thin) but absolutely nice and solid. Would totally use this…

I Want to make one the plastruct way so onto the rotary table. Happy with the result. The center octagon is over cut by 1mm on all sides to inlay small plates to make the inside so it looks too big because it is. . It will close up proper.

IMG_3576.jpeg

A side by side of the right and wrong Plastruct profile. Left is incorrect

IMG_3578.jpeg

That is enough for tonight.

Michael, You're a one man bomber factory!

Thank you Brett. More like i am a tinkerer and like to find the best way to do something. I am not happy with good enough when i know i can do better.

I am very much stuck right now at the body scribing step. I started attaching parts with white glue to get alignment for scribing and chicken out... Combination of uncertain part placement and not wanting to scribe things wrong. Ill get over this at some point but in the meantime i refine my parts and build anything else i can...

Sometimes the need for perfection holds us back and experimenting. So much of my build I had never done before but I knew once I did it I would never be able to say that again. I made mistakes, recovered and moved on. When the best technique for you comes around you’ll know.

Finished my quest for perfect body cylinder nose cones. Perfect in the sense that they are the best I can do and are good enough.

Both are from Plastruct domes.

IMG_3783.jpeg

I still need to install the "vents" and square off the corners on the bomb cylinder side but pleased and moving on…

Some actual work today. I only have one Moser Karl model. That means I do not have two housings to build the bomb pod.

After reading Bret’s adventure with this part I wondered why can you make the pod from one Karl. Let’s try…

Cut it in half and remove the top of the side you don't need. Use the Hanomag greeblies as a cut guide leaving one side larger than the other.

IMG_3856.jpeg

IMG_3857.jpeg

Glue in a new top for the Karl side we are trying to use as a surrogate.

IMG_3858.jpeg

At this point progress was faster than pictures. Next was to flatten the angle tops of both sides and remove some decking from the Leopold gun for the side walls.

Sand to width, add some joining plates and glue together and shorten to size.

IMG_3864.jpeg

IMG_3865.jpeg

Now tape the bottom to guide with opening the bomb drop.

IMG_3866.jpeg

Add some putty and wait for the results. I think this is going to work.

IMG_3867.jpeg

Last bit was me being cheap. I do t have Moser Karl B8 bits for some reason. Let’s make them.

IMG_3853.jpeg

The bomb pod arm is next.

IMG_3883.jpeg

That is all for today.
