YAFF - Yet Another 5 Footer Falcon Build

Sorry... ;(
I have been trying to source the original fan used - will post here if I can figure it out
I've been on the hunt for that as well, if you ever find out, please let me know. I'd love to use real fans if I could ever find them.

There's a vintage electronics shop in Toronto that has boxes of old crap laying around. I showed him the one blurry photo I had and he looked at me like I had two heads.

If I ever find out, will definitely let you know.

I threw the photo and some other bits into chatGPT - but not as helpful as it could have been - I think I figured the dimensions out correctly.
Really the only hope I have now is someone who actually knows the fan model.

From ChatGPT
Given the updated details—that this is an 80mm x 80mm x 40mm fan, with 9 blades and potentially from the 1970s—this narrows down the possibilities further. Fans from that era with these dimensions were likely used in specialized industrial, military, or early computing equipment, as cooling technology was evolving during that time. Here are a few potential directions to explore:

  1. Sanyo Denki: Known for producing industrial and computing fans since the 1960s, Sanyo Denki may have made models matching this design in the 1970s. Their early models sometimes featured distinct colors or hub designs, which could help match the blue center detail you mentioned.
  2. Papst (Now EBM-Papst): Papst is a German manufacturer with a long history of making high-quality, durable fans. They produced several fans in the 80mm x 40mm size in the 1970s, which were used in industrial machinery and early computers. Papst fans from this era often have a metal frame and unique markings on the central hub.
  3. Nidec: Although known more widely today, Nidec was established in the early 1970s and manufactured specialized fans. They occasionally had models with unique central hubs, though it might be rare to find one with a blue color.
  4. Rotron: Rotron was another major manufacturer of industrial fans in the 1970s, especially for military and aviation applications. Their fans were robust and often had custom designs for specific applications, sometimes with distinguishing features like colored labels or unique hub shapes.
  5. Airesearch (Garrett AiResearch): If this fan came from military or aerospace equipment, Garrett AiResearch was known for making specialized cooling fans for electronics in the 1970s. They often used custom designs suited for high reliability, though identifying specific models can be challenging.

“Dazza isa nica lista”

All joking aside, I did do some looking for vintage 3” / approximately 9 blade muffin fans on e-bay a couple of years ago. Found only one Rotron design that had the larger diameter rotating hub with the distinctive slot. I do not remember if it had the circle marks on the disc, but the blades were a match to the available original pictures.

Can not find again anything made yet that is close. Need to dig out my old 1970 McMaster-Carr catalog for any leads. These always had good pictures of equipment offered back then. If a make and model number is discovered, there may be a way to obtain an old manufacture’s catalog cut if antique stock does not exist some place. It would be nice to scratch build from higher quality fan pictures. Room for real fans, but my internal space is becoming tight with the spider web of wiring, hoses, gears and switches.

lol, sorry for the delays, been sick - so not a lot of progress.
Really all I've done since the last uploads was a lot of tweaks to the Guns to make them more accurate - based on Feedback from Olly Barret, and some reference material I never had when I first did them
So the gun is about as close to the real thing as I can get. I also test printed a few of the more detailed items with a 2mm nozzle. I have switched back to 4mm as am moving back onto the bigger bits.

Dazza007,
Love your detailed drawings. All you guys (UFG’s) are impacting me in a good way. Flak damage, engine deck fans and now quad gun improvements. Completion schedule is slipping, but it’s a pleasure to get closer to a reasonably accurate Falcon.

Management & construction was always asking design engineering when we were going to be “Done~Done.”

WOW to say the least. I didn't know just how much I needed this in my life. I downloaded the files so far, they are in the zip but Winzip wont extract them for me.

It may be a corrupt file, google drive does the zipping, so not much I can do there - maybe try deleting the file and downloading again, or download it by section, ie turrets, cockpit etc

Happy New Year to all,
I'd like to apologize for the lack of updates over the past few months - my mother was unwell, and unfortunately passed just before Christmas.
So apart from a lack of time, I also had a lack of enthusiasm to do anything. She is at peace now.

So full steam ahead in a few weeks, once we sort out her house etc and I catch up with all my other work that I had put on hold.

Cheers D
