YAFF - Yet Another 5 Footer Falcon Build

I just returned to this thread to ask whether it may be possible to remove the greeblies for better and easier sanding of the huge flat areas, and then I went back to the first page and read that you are printing on a Prusa MK3 and here I am, quietly sobbing away because of the beauty of those prints and looking at my large Neptune3 Max, thinking about whether or not size really matters ...
I will at some stage do a clean model with no greeblies/Panels, might be at the end of the project tho.
Have since switched printers up to a Bambu P1S, slightly bigger build plate, but still quality prints.

Finally somewhere for my Cockpit to connect - now I have to finish the rest of the quarter, but its looking good.
My hook and magnet connection to connect the main cockpit to the arm, worked a treat. (esp given i designed the cockpit side of it 6 months ago now)

Just printing off the upper Greeblie strip - they are all mounted on a thin strip 0.5mm which has enough flex to just lay it in the trench and glue it down.

Many thanks to Stuart Brown for the reference photos - made my life a lot easier laying this one out.

Hi Darrin, just a minor FYI, you may already have corrected it. I was looking at your cockpit cone files to see if we had arrived in similar places as far as size goes, and I noticed you have a little part on the bottom of the cockpit cone that should be spun around 180 degrees.

The little handle should face forward as per below.

Stunning. Just stunning, Darrin  (y) Any updates to the parts store due?

Thanks for the heads up - I was just about to print another version of the cockpit out (Everything is constantly evolving) , so will fix that before I go ahead. (Would have been a waste of a 17 hour print ;) )

Hoping to have both Upper Front discs completed this week, am holding off posting them up until I am happy with how they bolt / mount to the frame and to the mandible parts. might be 2 weeks tops before I put them into the drive.

There is my 'Final' version of the gun with the O-rings and the Turrets with Swappable Gun Mounts, but think thats the last bits I put in there.

I`m like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. Thanks, Darrin!

Perfect! Ah, P1S, that relieves my pain a little ;) But then again, the N3Max still delivers good quality even on smaller parts, and I am hopeful that I can set up shop in a few weeks in a new location, being able to dial the printer in to its max quality and in a spot where it does not really matter if it prints two or twenty hours with slower speed settings definitely achieving better quality prints on a bed slinger. But once CoreXY with huge build volume comes out ...

Ok a quick question for the Brains trust here.
I originally did my Engine Vents like the one on the right - but looking further at some photos decided the top of the fan is a lot more recessed. so redid it like the one on the left, (Still think its not quite deep enough). So I was just wondering if anyone has any measurements for the depth of the fan.

Thanks to Bjorn for the Cowling Dimensions, and Joshua Maruska who's fan design mine is based off.

I also managed to print the koolshade to some degree, (Yes it actually behaves like a koolshade as well - blocking at certain angles)
So the design allows you to use the real thing or print it if you so feel inclined.

For a test I swapped the Nozzle in my Printer out for a 2mm one, rather than the standard 4mm, looks a lot better, so I will go with that option for some of the more detailed prints.

IMHO the originals (I do wonder why we do not have a clear photo of those available?) are more of a radial design with the fins standing at an almost 70 degree angle and not as shallow as the current pc vents are.

And here, me weeping again. 0,2mm Nozzle. 0,04 mm layer height. Insanity. Print time?

If you need your fans to be "above the deck" of the rear engine deck, then your design looks fine. If you want true tube axial fans that go through the deck, then you do have to take into account the actual depth of them, which is 1.635" for the fan and casing combined.

True, looking at the photos the fans are at quite an angle, so great info - and 2 hours for just the Koolshade - I still have to model the braided wire parts of them properly, (Thats a fun one)

Thanks for the info - I have decided to do a shallow version for those mounting above deck - and a truer deep one - so many thanks for the info, its going to come in very handy.

Glad I could help! Ya know, all those couch coaches and keyboard jocks out there ... well at least I can prove that I have about two decades of keyboard experience, just look at my join date here ;)

H All,
New Version based on feedback here, it does sort of match the photos. (I do need to tweak the raised rings on the top a little)
I made the assumption that the top of the actual fan would be lower than the bottom of the cowling, as the actual full fan unit would more than likely be mounted below the deck, and the cowling on top - this actually worked better than I expected.

I'm still open to adjustments if anyone has any further info.

Thanks Dazza007 for fielding the question plus DaddyfromNaboo & Studio Kitbash on your expert guidance. Amazing how much one strives years for reasonable fidelity and then up comes another Falcon detail. Rather important observation. Back I will go with the hole saw and recess my fan mock-ups deeper in the engine deck. The greeblies are shaking in fear.

Sorry... ;(
I have been trying to source the original fan used - will post here if I can figure it out
