The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Yep, that's the part I was referring to. MR is more square than original. TWC is more rounded than original.

I take everything I said back. I'm cancelling my order. TWC completely missed this switch.

I honestly don't think I've ever noticed it before.
That was originally on the B hero, but this unit is an amalgam of the B frame and the A faceplate, with body panels from who-knows-where. Apparently the Desilu prop monkeys didn't give a rat's patoot about reassembling them correctly after recasting.

BAD PROP MONKEY! BAD, BAD PROP MONKEY!

A reflection of Tricorder for retail Mfg’s….(excluding vintage tricorders i.e. with cassette tapes.. etc.)

Playmates
Diamond Select
Master Replicas
The Wand Company

Am I missing anyone?

Very cool. I seriously missed that this whole time!

The HMS convention kit, which became the “Trials and Tribble-ations” prop, which became the Roddenberry.com kits and pre-built replicas, which became the Diamond Select toy.

Thanks for the evolutionary pedigree begat’s :)

This is a unique case of fans-turned-pro, since the convention replica masters became the basis of the props used on DS9, which were then ported over to the commercial world with the Rodd.com and DST kits and toys.

Same with the phasers. The HMS TOS convention replicas led to the DS9 props, which led to the Rodd.com kits and replicas, which led to the Art Asylum/Diamond Select toys.

Oddly, though, the HMS TOS convention communicators led to the DS9 props, which led to the Rodd.com kits and replicas…but the Diamond Select toys were based on the Master Replicas communicator, which was based on John Long’s fat-butt replicas.

I examined one of those at a prop party in PA maybe 25 years ago (I also got to examine the McCoy scanner, Garth remote, and Crewman Green's tunic). I knew it was way off the minute I saw it. There was another comm there that in retrospect was probably authentic, and it looked much slimmer.

Just for funzies, here are my modified Rodd.com kits compared to the AA/DST toys. Most notably, I completely replaced the tricorder's faceplate for more accurate screen and mesh-hole shapes.

But you can immediately see the differences between the HMS/Rodd.com communicator and the AA/DST (based on the MR).

That tricorder looks killer! well done.

I'm happier with my subsequent TREKME/Jayeff build, which is far more accurate, and which I built with a disc ejector.

You can see the subtle shape and proportion differences compared to the HMS version. Most notably, the HMS version is slightly taller, and the divider plate in the disc compartment is off-center.
