The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

did the real one have a touchscreen, I hate them in my car
I would say ….no.

The Wand version like Master Replicas, Playmates, Diamond Select…..took a TV hero prop and added bells and whistles.

From an auction in 2023…..

2023 October 14 - 15 The Greg Jein Collection Hollywood Platinum Signature® Auction #7278 / Lot #89137

Wah Chang-Built Hero Starfleet Tricorder from Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount TV, 1966-1969). Vintage original hero Tricorder (portable sensing-recording-computing device) prop constructed of vacuum-formed plastic shell, aluminum, resin and faux leather components, designed and built by the legendary artist, sculptor, model and miniature master Wah Chang, who created many of the props and alien creatures for Star Trek: TOS. This hero Tricorder is one of two built by Chang and was intended to be used for close up photography with enhanced design details as well as vastly superior fit and finish compared with later examples built on the Desilu/Paramount studio lot (Wah Chang provided an image of a Desilu Productions, Inc. invoice, dated June 21, 1966, paying him to build "Two tricorders @ $275.00 ea." for the 1991 book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, by Herbert F. Solow and Robert H. Justman). This hand prop features a flip-top panel containing an aluminum-framed 2" x 1.5" plastic view screen, a tiny brass speaker screen, 3-dials, and 3-blue jewels mounted on wristwatch crowns. A design characteristic unique to this hero Tricorder is the installation of a small black slide switch on top of the aluminum crossbar. This unique switch is visible in episodes "Shore Leave" and "The Galileo Seven". Two hinged front panels open (the top panel lid opens partially) and both compartments are empty. Includes the original integral faux leather carrying strap (Note: An unfinished leather strap with brown suede exposed on one side was installed on this Tricorder for both "Shore Leave" and "The Galileo Seven". Production later switched to the present faux leather strap design that is finished on both sides). The prop measures 5.5" x 7" x 1.75" and exhibits age, production wear and some soiling. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Collection of Greg Jein.

Tricorder update #20

Tested Review

Chris shows Adam round the tricorder

Dear Todd,

Your patience continues to be appreciated as we complete the tricorder development. Right now we are putting the finishing touches to the software and getting all the regulatory approvals and type testing completed so that we can move into full production.

By now, of course, we have a handful of finished tricorders that we are using, playing with, and generally testing, pushing their functions to see if we can expose any software kinks that need smoothing out, or if there are any last minute improvements we think we can make to the tricorder and the way it feels.

At this point we had originally planned to put a video or series of short videos together to show our progress, show you the fit and finish of the final production mechanicals and explore some of the features with you, but then the chance of doing an interview with Adam Savage of Tested came up.

Tested is based in San Fransisco, so not exactly around the corner for a UK based team. However, the draw of visiting the Savage Shop, otherwise known as "The Cave", and showing Adam and folks at Tested the current preproduction tricorder, and thus at the same time giving you a peek at how close we are to going into full production, was opportunity we couldn't really pass up.

Adam and Norm were both very keen to explore the tricorder and get to grips with some of its functions.

San Fransisco is a lovely city and Adam and Norm and the whole Tested team could not have been more welcoming. Visiting the Cave and being physically immersed in the myriad of glorious prop and replica builds that ooze from every pore of the place was such a real buzz for me.

A big thank you also to Jeromy Warner of YourGeekFix. Jeromy is one of the kindest and smartest guys I know and it was totally with his help we fixed up the Tested trip. I guess could tell you all about the interview and show more pictures, but really, that would spoil the fun of watching the interview for yourself.

Watch Chris showing Adam around the tricorder on the Tested channel when it airs next Monday June 3, 2024.

Enjoy!

LLAP

Chris

Coming next time:
Close up photos of the tricorder
Looking forward to the video. I just hope that Norm isn’t in it. Man I find that guy boring, low energy, over-talkative about nothing and uninspired.

I don’t watch any Tested videos with him in them.

I’m sure he’s a cool guy otherwise.

I've seen people express that opinion about him a number of times, but I'm the total opposite. He comes across to me as an enthusiastic guy, sometimes with the energy of a fan rather than a presenter or polished interviewer. But he's always interested and often asks decent questions. I think prop videos with him and Adam end up working great, and I really liked the recent Pip-Boy video.

I get that some people just don’t click with certain others for whatever reason, but I personally agree with mrwax. While I love Adam’s insights and the skilled work he’s able to share with his fans, not being much of a maker myself, I much more closely relate to Norm as a collector and prop enthusiast.

The next Star Trek prop is coming from The Wand Company and I am super GEEKED about it! They're finally doing a TOS Tricorder! This news couldn't come at a better time since I've been sniffing around ebay, trying to pick up an MR version for less than $1,000, which is not an easy task...

Anyway, I have the MR and TWC versions of the Phaser and Communicator and I've been very impressed at TWC quality in comparison. For the money, TWC offers some damn good replicas.

Here's the announcement with a link to receive updates...

Hello,

My name is Jeromy Warner from Your Geek Fix on YouTube. A couple of weeks ago Chris Barnardo of the Wand Company and I went to TESTED to show off the final working Tricorder. After, we unboxed it together on video. You can check it out at
beginning at 5:00 AM CST on June 3rd 2024. The good news is that it is coming this year and that it is AWESOME! You will not believe everything is does and the work that went into it. It was so much fun playing with this thing. It works exactly as I would picture the tricorder would work in real life. So, check it out and be encouraged, it is here!

From the Wand website,,,,,,,“Pre-orders will first be announced to fans who register their interest”

Well I wonder under the “pre-orders” if there’s a quantity limit.

Personally, looking for two……one to play with….and one store away in its case fresh condition.

Peace

Looks like the video has already been taken down (marked as private)?

We also visited TESTED who will show a video later the same day.
