Unlimited Run Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonics!

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

this may be a stupid question but, which claws did I get on mine?

You have the standard claws on yours.

Just an update for everyone, two of the last 4 sets of claws are spoken for. After the remaining two are sold, that's it.

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

another stupid question.. what is the difference in the claws?

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

actually, never mind.. I just saw and answered my own question lol

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

The standard sonics use the claws that come with the remote and are held on by 4 individual L shaped brackets. While they look quite nice, when opened one can see the claws are hollow on the inside. (see image below) The new claws are waterjet cut from 3/16th aluminum are completely solid and thus more accurate. The new claws are mounted to the sonic via a single cut piece that holds all 4 claws at once like the original prop.

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

I could probably make one using a CO toy and pool cue.

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

In an interesting development, my waterjet guys accidentally cut a few extra sets of claws. So that being said, I currently have 6 sets left of the deluxe claws. But as I said before, once they're gone, I wont be cutting anymore.

Thanks for the tip on the #0000 steel wool for polishing. For anyone who wants a good shine, I used simichrome metal polish on my sonic after using the steel wool. You did an awesome job Kursosawa.

So the wand company is releasing a extending 12th Doctor universal remote. By the looks of the pictures they have on facebook it is no where near a perfect replica. So if anything this new remote is making it easier for you to mod it for accuracy. Some issues I see from the pictures are hollow claws, inaccurate grip, they are still using the mirror like copper, that weird coating on the silver bits, and inaccurate white grip. Testing will probably have to be done for a new mod. But I am definitely going to buy this new one because it seems like mods might become a bit cheaper. :D

A bit of an update, i currently have 6 sets left of the deluxe claws, so if anyone wants either a completed deluxe sonic drop me a line. These last sonics will also feature simulated brass rivets on the copper cage.

What do the simulated brass rivets look like?

While subtle, I think they add a great deal to the overall aesthetic. Perhaps I got a little too enthusiastic with the steel wool when polishing this up. This last batch of the deluxe sonics will all feature the brass detailing. Furthermore, they will also have a copper/brass coupler in the middle for greater durability. It will take a while to wear in and get a fluid flick, but It will get there. I almost forgot to mention, the fillister screws are back! Anyone who wants one of these will get the choice of the brass fillister screw or the black allen head screw.

DexAntares this is your sonic..

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

Looks fantastic, man! Although the emitter crystal looks a bit on the blueish side... In any case, I love the finish. It's just the right balance between shiny and not-too-shiny. And it looks great with the brass rivets. How are they attached?

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

Has anyone had any problems with their sonic tarnishing/oxidizing on the copper parts? I'm not sure if it's because of the way I polished it or if it is just something that always occurs. I've tried using renaissance wax and haven't had any luck.

The way I polish my sonic:
1) I use the #0000 steel wool
2) Clean up using Cape Cod polishing cloth
3) Apply thin layer of renaissance wax

Maybe if I skip the Cape Cod cloth? Also one of the pins securing the claws seems to pop out when I flick it. Any ideas on how to secure that would be awesome.

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

To secure the pin apply superglue with a toothpick to the inside of the claw where the pin sits.
As for the oxidation of the copper, that is perfectly natural. i have never used renaissance wax so im not sure if it would slow it down.
I should note that if you are using the cape cod cleaning cloths, you can actually just skip the steel wool. Just wipe the piece with a microfiber cloth after the cape cod and your done.

And an update for anyone interested in a deluxe sonic or upgrading their standard to a deluxe sonic, im down to my last 5 sets of claws/brackets.

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

If anyone is interested, I can install the 10th Doctor Remote electronics Into the 11th Body. this option is available for both standard and deluxe sonics.
Overall, it works quite well. Most of the gestures remain unaffected by the additional weight and casings. The only functions affected by the new body are the 4 tap gestures. Those require a little more force than the 10th remote but not by a whole lot. Personally i find this an improvement. I have found that the tap functions work best when I tap on the rubber section. It will still retain the USB charging functionality. Just remove the end cap/handle assembly to reveal the USB charging port.
PM me for pricing details.

Just got my Screwdriver in the mail today, and I actually did this mod before I even saw it in the thread. Overall I'm very happy with this replica, and I'm eager to see what you do with the extending Twelfth Doctor remote Wand Company is coming out with. Thanks again for everything~

Re: Completed 11th / 12th Doctor Sonic remote conversions Last call for deluxe sonic

I solved my oxidizing problem on my sonic. I was sick of having to polish the screwdriver every day, so I decided to use some rustoleum clear enamel on the copper parts. Its been a few days since I've applied it, and no tarnishing effects! I gave the metal a good shine before applying the clear coat, and it still has a glossy shine to it.
