An RPF Open Source 5 ft Millennium Falcon Build/Reference Thread. All Are Welcome

I played around with Photoshop and this was the best I could come up with. You can see it appears that there are small boxes where it attaches to the dish. I would assume this pattern continues on the other side and bottom making a + shape.

You're talking about between the Stug ring and the dish John, right? Not the outside Stug piece (Box w/ 4 nipples on it) with the hoses running out of the bottom of it where the Hurricane gun attaches. I can't see in any of my 'other' photos, something between the Stug ring and dish. Not yet anyways...

Back to one of the other pieces… and I should add that there have been those that came before us that deserve ALL the credit for pointing us in the right direction to a lot of these parts! If it weren't for those that came before us, I don't think we'd be as far along as we are in our journeys! So a BIG THANK YOU from me to all those that blazed this trail long before us. I had an idea that this part may come from this specific kit due to all the hard work done in the past! Although it still took me a while to figure out what part we might have to use from this kit before I figured it out. A "Have to double check everything and make sure before your sure" kind of thing. Haha! Just want to put that disclaimer here, and say thank you from me!

How about Airfix 0/400 # 127 & 128 for the parts glued to the side of Stug/Saturn? Cut out 4 of them? What say you all?

Tricky little b@s+@rds to cut. Glad I have more than one of these kits. That's what happens when you’re in a hurry! Round 2 coming soon! With a set of magnifying glasses, and no grandson’s around! LOL

I think you're right. Also might be some more spacers at other positions (image from swgeek)?

Could the "spacers" not just be possibly some more of the ISE/Hygu guns? You'd need something about the same thickness (maybe a little less though depending on the 'dish' of the dish) as the guns on the edge, also placed in the middle of the Stug ring just to keep uniform support and give more attachment points, yes? And, is it just me, does the one on top right in the pic Manugu posted (credit to whoever's photo it is -Johnathan? ; o) look like it might have the same side profile as one of the ISE guns? I'd actually have to lay the Stug ring on the outer edge ISE spacers and place on the VHD-600 to see if there's enough room with the curvature of the dish to fit more guns towards the center. I don't know if they'd fit that far in, if you know what I mean? There sure are plenty of guns in the kit though. Just the beginnings of a thought...

Does anyone else see the same profile as the guns in the pic? That's what I saw when I first looked at it. Maybe not as 'dramatic' as my drawing, but along those lines.

I can also see what you're talking about John... hmm?

Well here's where we are. Still need that piece on the front of the base but pictures are hard to come by.

Hey John. Not to mention radar again, or anything, but... Are we still looking for these too, or did you find them already? Curious... :)

(Edit: Just to clarify what I’m talking about (should have made the second circle smaller)- it looks like there’s is something coming out the bottom of the Shinano part, to the left of and not the part that isn’t colored in on the Fujimi IA, NJ, MO A#13. Maybe two more Shinano pipes running down below armor right next to each other, somewhat like the other Shinano part in this photo on the side that has pipes running out the bottom of it? Looks square to me though in the pic)

Need These Still - Radar.jpg

Gonna need two Hummel’s just for this! Haha! I’m totally joking, (but maybe not)… just cut the nub off for the one part circled… LOL

And here's the best pic I have of that part on the front we're still looking for... right? Maybe someone recognizes one or all, but I'll be looking for all three today. Going fishing... wish me luck! (Might be the same pic you used in map. Just noticed. ooops. LOL)

Well, figured out one thing... not the big one yet though! Ugh. In the original post photo I had what looked like a square hiding behind the Fujimi #A13 piece. Found a better pic and turns out it's another set of guns from the Shinano, just like the others on the side. So we're down to only 2 more parts to go anyways...

Last Missing Parts - Shinano Guns.jpg

Hey everyone, I could use your opinions before I can't turn back.... Haha!

Found a pic where you can definitely see that the Saturn ring is stacked on top of the stug ring. The stug color is plainly visible, and you can barely make out the joint between the two parts in in this pic. Very hard to see this in all the reference photos, and this is the best shot I've seen in my pics that shows this distinctly.

Radar Stug Ring Reference1.jpg

Then what do you think about this? Awful lot of work for these two parts here!

Then as for total height: I think it’s shorter than this in the reference, but might try double the height of the Stug hinge first so there’s room for error. Here is the Saturn ring cut (the ring itself, NOT including the Stug ring height) at 0.36” tall.

But in the reference of Falcon it doesn’t look like you could stack 2 of those Stug hinges within the Saturn rings height, if you get what I’m saying. So by laying two hinges tall I made a mark at half the height of the second hinge. So what it comes down to is cutting it at 0.3” tall. I think this might be the correct height.

Just wanted your opinion’s before I cut this. Seems like a lot of work for these two parts compared to the rest of the radar so far! Sheesh! Haha!

Thanks everyone!

P.S. Thanks to “The Guy” who provided me with this unbelievable casting of the Stug ring so I don’t have to sacrifice the real thing while doing this! You know who you are. But if I screw this one up, “I’ll be back!” Haha!

That looks like a pretty good approach to figure out the Saturn ring height. Has it ever been questioned/challenged if it's a Saturn V ring or not? The only reason I ask is because at that height it could be a tank wheel or rim, and it seems "odd" to me that they'd find a ring of the right OD but not the right height and need to cut it down, but then again a lot of things are odd on this bird.

You can 'for sure' tell they had to cut the Stug ring down to size, so I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility that they also trimmed the Saturn down as well here.

Okay… here it is. Looks like everything works out. You need to cut the Stug ring down to right around 1.78” in diameter to match the Saturn ring OD. So far in fact, there’s not much left of the Stug ring. So be careful. I had more left on the casting, than the actual part. It gets VERY thin there!

Then you have the cut the Saturn ring height down to your preference. I went with about 0.30” tall in these photos. I spread the Stug hinges out a little bit to better hold the wire. I used plastruct butyrate coated wire. I can’t find the invoice, but it is the smallest size they have which comes in black or gray.

I have to tell you I was concerned when I opened the Saturn box and started looking at the part. I didn’t think the side angle was sloped enough. But once it’s together it looks alright.

And when looking at Stug ring from behind you can tell they used 8 ISE Hyuga guns on the outside edge as the supports to glued to the dish, but you can also see that there is enough room for some extra center ISE guns towards the center of ring. So I would assume those inside supports we saw in the photos are also from ISE/Hyuga too.

And probably best to take a piece of sandpaper and lay on top of dish and sand the ISE guns down so they match the profile of the dish. So they all make contact and fit perfectly on there when it gets glued. I added 4 more guns for inside support. Just my two cents.
