YAFF - Yet Another 5 Footer Falcon Build

This is a HUGE achievement and it all but guarantees that people will be bringing these beauties to the next Star Wars celebration to have them gawked at by the masses, imagine a mini-fleet of these full-scale bad boys!!!

I am really interesting in seeing how you plan on handling the part separation for printing on the back engine deck. That was probably the biggest pain point on the falcon print I am currently working on. Filling seam lines in between and through greeblies is no fun.

I tend to do slight overlaps like in this image at the top to help minimize seam lines - and when doing plates they tend to be chamfered so they sit in place - I also do try and put seam lines in spots where they are less noticeable - but yeah I can imagine the upper deck being a bit of a jigsaw puzzle - I'm moving onto the upper deck side bits while I finish printing my Starboard mandible - and the next part will be the main upper engine deck.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the complete "bird"... Falcon is simply amazing, it's been many years since Falcon appeared in theaters... and this Corellian machine still makes us excited about a project like this. I was 11 years old when I saw EPIV in the theater (here in Brazil it came out in theaters in early 1978), I have it engraved in my mind as if it were today... the entrance of the Tantive being chased... and it didn't stop there, it was one scene after another that took our breath away... we just didn't want the movie to end.

Dazza, a question, I tried to ungroupe pits, but no sucess so far, if I m not wrong just one file or two open......even STEP or FUSION do not allow us to ungroupe, any chance to up load files with ungrouped option, I d like to print greeblies on resin printing separated.....tks in adv

Open the file in Blender, select the object and enter edit mode, then separate by loose parts. If there are individual objects making the whole, they'll be separated off. It sort of depends on how the objects was modelled. Individual objects booleaned together or just joined together.

Unfortunately seems were joined together...a tried a backup plan using the tool cut, but some small parts sometimes overlap with others, is also hard to use the tool "cut" to separated again....I m a little bit frustrated with that

Sorry some of the earlier ones I did I tried grouping everything (More to go for a solid model for resin printing)- I will upload ungrouped versions today for these.

I am almost done with the understructure and frame. For the docking frames, are the tabs on the outside end meant to go inside the DS/DP parts or on the outside?

Heres a photo of how that bit goes together - It is worth reading the notes, as I suggest not gluing the parts along the seam indicated and just bolting these on, as it makes it easier to get the docking rings on. these tabs are also to assist with mounting the sidewall end caps

Hmmm, I am pretty sure the parts next to the DP/DS parts did not have that notch. I need to double check. I was actually talking about these tabs on the ends

Ah sorry I thought you were talking about the Outer frame - yeah those bits slot into the gaps in the frame on the inside to give a flush mount for the Docking Ring

Roger that. I think I need to reprint the attaching outer frame parts as I double checked and the ones I printed did not have the notch you pointed out before.

And after a few weeks of slow high detail printing I have the port mandible mostly complete - apart from a little bit of piping left to add, and a little bit of seam filling in places. Just have to wait for the right conditions to give it a bit of paint.
FYI - I did prime and paint the upper parts of the pits prior to adding the deck plates as was going to be tricky to get paint into those areas.

Am now printing the Starboard one while I work on the upper engine deck parts.
