I remember when the Phantom Menace came out, thinking that those Star Wars dolls would be as popular and collectible as the original trilogies were, I went to a dozen different Walmarts, Kmart and Targets trying to collect the entire first wave. There are always individuals like that. Ebay is full of FOMO buyers that do little to no research on what they are buying. They impulse buy on emotion. As I said earlier it happens across all collectable franchises. Hot wheels are a really good example. FOMO diecast collectors get angry that people hoard all the hyped castings of the month so they resort to eBay and pay $10-20 for a $1 car that is mass produced and still in stores. They justify their purchase thinking they will be obtain one and hope the aftermarket price continues to soar. Every single time the opposite is true and much of those diecast end up at a couple bucks at most.
There will never be a shortage of buyers like this. It's been going on for well over 20 years at eBay with no change in site.
I could not find a Darth Maul for the life of me. One guy in the aisle asked me who I was looking for, I told him, and he casually told me that he was there at three in the morning and bought all eight of them that were on the shelf. If I would like to pay him $40 for one, he had it in his car and could make the transaction in the parking lot. Keep in mind they were still about $5.00 each back then.
Too bad you can’t get a scalper hunting license!
