The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

From Tricorder Update #23:

“we plan to bear the significant additional cost of airfreighting the Tricorders from the factory to the UK in order to get things moving for you as quickly as possible”.

Yeah, that sentence starts with "Initially at least," so no telling when they'll decide to stop airfreighting and start shipping. Hopefully they'll airfreight a lot of them.

Yep I did as well and this is a valid question

I think the history of development issues with the tricorder made this too much of a moving target. Hard to schedule orders a year in advance if you can't be sure when you're actually a year away from production.

I just hope TWC gets its shipping container loaded onboard soon…..I’m not liking where it’s at now….

Yikes!

I decided to figure out what was up with the timeline of the hero vs. fiberglass tricorders. And it seems that the process at least began while Season 1 was still in production. I'm probably late to the party on this, but here goes anyway.

First, the two heroes:

This is designated, I think, Hero A--straight door handles, leather strap, moire disk.

This would then be Hero B--again, straight door handles, leather strap, and holographic jewel disk.

So both heroes definitely had the straight door handles. Wah didn't make the bent ones.

Here's a hero being used in Operation: Annihilate--the leather strap gives it away. Can't tell whether it's A or B from the back.

But a curious thing happens prior to Operation: Annihilate--we see a fiberglass tricorder in Errand of Mercy. Stitched faux leather strap and bent door handles. This has to be one of the fiberglass copies.

But Operation: Annihilate was definitely the last episode shot of Season 1, with Errand of Mercy shot two or three weeks before, assuming a seven-day schedule:

So it appears that the tricorders had to have been recast while Season 1 was still shooting, and one of them was used in Errand.

Makes me curious about where exactly they found the money in the Season 1 budget to have this done. Bob Justman definitely said that the phaser debacle blew the bulk of their props budget for the season. They must have saved money somewhere else and used that to fund the new tricorders.

And we know, of course, that the hero Wand scanned in 2019 was now an A/B amalgam with a stitched faux leather strap and bent door handles. A Desilu Frankencorder!

And here's what we're getting very soon now...

The first appearance of the fiberglass “midgrade” Tricorders was in “Arena”…and it happens to be the Jein midgrade.

Arena” was episode 20 in the production order…some 8 episodes beforeErrand of Mercy”.

While the new midgrades are seen on location at Vasquez Rocks, one of the Wah Hero Tricorders—with its original, short. “Yeoman Rand-Sized” straps—is seen during the beam down opener…

…but curiously, flips from black to brown during the sequence (and, “No” this is not the brown side of the original step, which was lighter tan color with a rough texture):

Thanks!

Here's a better screen cap of the Arena midgrade from TrekCore:

You're right, that definitely matches the Jein midgrade, but strangely it has a leather strap.

Purportedly … Spock’s Arena Tricorder was the one that was smoked..also notice some strap separation at the stitch line.

That’s funny….those look like sphere heads from cork board stick pins for the 3 lights.

That settles the mystery…the Midgrades originally had BROWN straps, for this one episode where they first appeared.

It appears that he switched from a Hero to a new Midgrade, during various points in the episode…

The new, doubled-over and parallel stitched straps first appeared in the next episode…the dismal “The Alternative Factor”:

Yeah, that makes more sense than setting a $275 hero on fire. My guess is they dropped a smoke cookie into the lower compartment for that gag. Probably just a small piece of one, since they produce a lot of smoke.

I worked with them on a film in the 80s when we needed a lot of smoke for numerous outdoor scenes. Rumor was they were carcinogenic, but apparently they're still in use.

EDIT-- I just played back that shot, and if you look carefully there's a little smoke already coming out of the tricorder at the start of the shot, so it could very well have been a smoke cookie.

Not only do the “lights” look like cork board push pin heads…..the “adjustable switches” look like mere protective water proofing/dust rubber boots from micro toggle switches…similar to what’s shown below, but obviously not the same mfg.
