He does carry one in the opening scene of The Man Trap though. But I think that's the only time we see him carrying one.

Let’s just face it…he may have handled one, but as far as one being strapped across his chest or slung from his shoulder…that would be a … no no. I’m willing to be corrected with visual proof from an episode if anyone can find one, strapped or slung.
I bet script writers were frustrated with Shatner’s stubbornness on the matter.
I mean really….can you imagine Kirk on a planet ready to engage in a fight scene and say to the alien … “wait a minute, I have to put my tricorder down first….before I body slam you”
Imo… Kirk was much more physically animated in body movements than the rest of the cast members. A tricorder would have interfered in his acting choreography.
