The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Just had the most annoying thing happen. I have four tabs open from the Wand website--the blog, the tricorder page, the tricorder manual, and the comm manual. All of a sudden, all four of them threw up an "Access Restricted--ShieldPro" alert. The website's security blocked my IP because of too many requests. I've been hitting the site so much it thought I was a bot or something. So I had to click on "Verify my IP" and pinky swear that I was using the site for a "legitimate purpose," whatever that means.

I wish I'd thought to get a screenshot, but I didn't and now the alert page doesn't come up when I select it in my history. The little website icons on my tabs turned into a green shield, but other than that I'm back on the site as before with no issues.

I feel like I just got pulled over by the internet cops or something.

This has happened to me more than once. The first time it happened, the “Verify your IP” button wasn’t there and Charlotte said they didn’t know why it happened, but they fixed it. The next time it happened, the verify button was there.

Their servers must be smoking!

EDIT--Disregard my query below--I found the previous post. The code is 8519.89.20.00. Watch this space, I'm checking the tariff schedule...

********************

Did anybody ever get the Harmonized Tariff Schedule code for the tricorder? The government just announced a whole slew of electronics products are being exempted from the 120% tariff and will instead be subject to a 20% tariff. I have the CBP website open to the page that lists code series exempted from the reciprocal tariffs, and I downloaded that chapter of the schedule from their website, but without the tricorder HTS code I can't figure out whether it's covered or not.

Now, this is an exemption from the reciprocal tariff regime, and the exemption says nothing about whether this applies to de minimis items. So again, without the HTS code for the product, there's no telling.

This could be extremely good news. But without that HTS code number...

Aw, bummer. The tricorder HTS code does not appear on the CBP list of exempted electronics. Here's the list:
  • 8471
  • 8473.30
  • 8486
  • 8517.13.00
  • 8517.62.00
  • 8523.51.00
  • 8524
  • 8528.52.00
  • 8541.10.00
  • 8541.21.00
  • 8541.29.00
  • 8541.30.00
  • 8541.49.10
  • 8541.49.70
  • 8541.49.80
  • 8541.49.95
  • 8541.51.00
  • 8541.59.00
  • 8541.90.00
  • 8542
And unfortunately the tricorder code, 8519.89.20.00, is not in this series. It skips from 8517 to 8523.

EDIT--HTS schedule notes removed, as they did not account for the special China tariffs. Sorry.

With a high tariff, will those wanting to buy two, cut back to one?

Quite possibly. Since the tricorder isn't on the list of exempted products, we're back to the special China tariffs on de minimis goods. For goods entering the US via the international postal system as of May 2, the tariff currently stands at either 120% ad valorem or a flat $100, and as far as I can tell from my research of various law firms' and trade companies' websites, the choice of tariff is at the discretion of the carrier (why that is I couldn't determine). After June 1, the flat tariff jumps to $200.

For goods arriving by carriers other than the international postal system, full ad valorem tariffs apply.

So it'll depend on how the tricorders are shipped into the US, and which tariff is chosen--ad valorem or flat.

And of course, all this assumes that the tricorders start arriving here after May 2, which is still 2 1/2 weeks away, and that there isn't an extension of the date or some other modification between now and then.

Well for me….definitely 1.

As for a 2nd…..I may gamble in that perhaps the price has become so high with tariffs that some may give up on buying all together….which would then leave a glut that will eventually be marked down by high percentages…and then I’ll jump into that frenzy….

I decided to figure out what was up with the timeline of the hero vs. fiberglass tricorders. And it seems that the process at least began while Season 1 was still in production. I'm probably late to the party on this, but here goes anyway.

First, the two heroes:

This is designated, I think, Hero A--straight door handles, leather strap, moire disk.

This would then be Hero B--again, straight door handles, leather strap, and holographic jewel disk.

So both heroes definitely had the straight door handles. Wah didn't make the bent ones.

Here's a hero being used in Operation: Annihilate--the leather strap gives it away. Can't tell whether it's A or B from the back.

But a curious thing happens prior to Operation: Annihilate--we see a fiberglass tricorder in Errand of Mercy. Stitched faux leather strap and bent door handles. This has to be one of the fiberglass copies.

But Operation: Annihilate was definitely the last episode shot of Season 1, with Errand of Mercy shot two or three weeks before, assuming a seven-day schedule:

So it appears that the tricorders had to have been recast while Season 1 was still shooting, and one of them was used in Errand.

Makes me curious about where exactly they found the money in the Season 1 budget to have this done. Bob Justman definitely said that the phaser debacle blew the bulk of their props budget for the season. They must have saved money somewhere else and used that to fund the new tricorders.

And we know, of course, that the hero Wand scanned in 2019 was now an A/B amalgam with a stitched faux leather strap and bent door handles. A Desilu Frankencorder!

And here's what we're getting very soon now...

As an aside, there’s actually a remarkable amount of consistency in terms of specific props being used by specific actors/characters.

Tricorder A (moire): Spock Hero.

Tricorder (jewel disc): McCoy.

Alpha Communicator: Spock Hero.

Beta Communicator: Kirk Hero.

TMOST/Finney phaser: Primary/most-favored closeup hero.

TCOTK/Reilly/Lenore phaser: The least-favored hero.

Pinning down whether specific actors favored specific midgrades and dummies is trickier, of course.

Absolutely. Yesterday I sent them an email saying much the same thing.

Same. As much as I hate it, I would gladly bear the brunt of any tariffs for TWC as they have always been nothing but amazing in their efforts, communication, and support.

Quick story, my phaser was purchased New In Box but on the secondary market a while after they quit making them. Upon opening it, I noticed the Dilithium chamber door was loose. Removing it, I discovered one of the prongs was cracked and barely hanging on. At the slightest touch, the prong broke off and the door would no longer stay in the chamber. I emailed support asking if that was a known issue or if they had any thoughts on repairing it. I wasn't expecting much, as these were long out of production. Charlotte responded to me right in the middle of the worst part of the Covid pandemic, when everything was shut down. They weren't in the office at the time but she said she'd try to rummage around for a spare once she got back to the office to drop off some things. I told her no worries, I fully understood and had no expectations as I did buy it on ebay after production had halted on them.
Barely an hour later, she emailed me again saying she found an extra one AT HER HOUSE and had already packed it up and shipped it off to me. She absolutely refused any kind of payment for her time or the replacement part. I received it a couple of weeks later. I was floored by the level of genuine concern and care she expressed at such a trivial matter during one of the worst pandemics the world has ever seen. TWC deserves every bit of help the fans can offer to help mitigate any extra cost on the tricorders after everything they've gone through to get these through production and end up with a product even better than they hoped, and at a very reasonable price compared to similar offerings from other companies. I don't know if Chris or the rest of the team is on the RPF or will ever read this. I hope they do, as they've earned a customer for life.

All the excitement and activity in this thread had me digging my phaser and communicator out of storage yesterday to play with them again. Thankfully they both still hold a charge and work perfectly. I need to be better at charging them every 6 months or so to keep the batteries from completely dying. Can't wait to complete the set!

I've heard similar stories from others too. And I've had my own customer service experiences with Charlotte--twice--and she was wonderful. Once she replaced my comm when the moire motor died, and the other time she handheld me through a battery replacement. They're so responsive, and show genuine care for the fans. I'm a customer for life too. :)

Has anyone actually received an official invite to place their order on Amazon UK?

(Other than the liar on FB)

Just curious…
