Done / Completed TEMPLE DART from Raiders, Chachapoya / Hovitos

Well, the black wash really did its thing! These arrows are dark now, contrary to how they look in this over-compensated phone photo:

You get a better sense of how they look by comparing them to other Indy stuff:

Now I need to cut them off, paint the back ends, and try a little Fuller's Earth for the win!

(I do think in future that the string will be painted a little less brightly at first. Or I can weather it down further.

I cut off the ends at about six inches past the wrap:

I used scissors to do the cutting so that they wouldn't be too perfect, and painted the ends with some leftover black wash. Once the paint was dry, I pressed the ends down hard on a flat surface, and I think they work great!

Changed my photo booth backdrop...this is a lot more accurate, and the arrowheads do have a bit of a bronze sheen!

I recorded a couple quick videos so you can see the effect:

I feel like I need a tetanus shot just handling them!

Okay, next update: how I'm displaying it!
  • I went to the pet store and picked up this reptile cave, which is a wooden half-circle covered in bark on the outside:
  • The curve was more acute than I want, so I split it with a screwdriver and a hammer. A few good taps and it cut cleanly in half.
  • I took my Dremel and cut a slot in it, wide enough and deep enough to fit the smaller part of the arrowhead.
  • And then I squeezed a little hot glue into the slot, and dropped in my dart at a slightly downward angle.

A little bit of double-sided tape, and it's in the corner of my display shelf, with the dart angling about 45 degrees longways and forward. It adds a nice 3D effect to the display!

Okay, about the run. Give me a week or two to start getting parts and materials together, but this is the plan. I will offer the dart in three versions:

(Note: All kits will include STRING as the wrap, NOT wire.)
  1. $10.00 - Raw kit - You must sand, assemble, and paint. I'll provide the arrowhead, 1mm rod, string, and dowel.
  2. $20.00 - Assembled & Primed - I will sand, assemble, and prime the whole dart in black. You have to finish it.
  3. $30.00 - Fully finished - As you see above, with all 8 layers of coloration and weathering that I went through!
Shipping in the U.S. is free. Shipping outside the U.S. will be a discounted $12 total, regardless of quantity ordered.

I won't be asking for payment until I have inventory ready to go. But to RESERVE your dart, PLEASE DM me with your location and quantity of which kit(s) you want.

I will keep updating this thread as I make progress in the run.

Guys, I can't thank you enough for the votes of confidence. This came out so well because I had cheerleaders!

I have updated the first post with all the details for the Run.

If you expressed interest, you are NOT yet "reserved", because I need to know how many of which kits you need. DM me please. I will make enough for everyone who expressed interest.

Thanks!
Bill

This is the string I will be using for the wrap in the actual kits and finished darts:

It's quite a bit more natural than the stuff in my prototype. Loving the color! I won't be painting it, except to give it the black wash at the end, of course.

Finished the painting on this batch:

Next comes a little cleanup of the patina, followed by the string wrap and some weathering.

This run is now full.

If you missed it and are still interested, please let me know! Sometimes slots open up, and sometimes if the interest is high another run can happen!

First batch of thirteen is done and ready to ship! The remaining darts should be done this week.

Please watch for a DM from me.

Thanks!
