Unlimited Run Mal Reynolds Pistol - Firefly & Serenity Version (3D Printed Kit)

Re: Mal Reynolds Pistol (3D Printed Kit)

How much prep is typical for these printed kits?
Some gluing and sanding, depends on how smooth you like things. Not more than a couple hours total I'd say, based on my previous kits

That is indeed a good question. I've seen some pics of your previously done runs, where you can see... actually don't now how to describe that in engl.... where you can see some moire'-effect / graining, even on painted kits, which obvioulsy is from the 3D print.

The question is, can the surface of the gun-kit smoothed out that way, that I get a 90% even surface without the said effect?

You can get ABS plastic perfectly smooth, just depends on the time and effort, time being the one I usually run short on. I start with 80 grit, move to 150 and then if you want it real smooth 220

Re: Mal Reynolds Pistol (3D Printed Kit)

I believe it can also be smoothed out by exposure to Acetone vapor, there are a few videos on You Tube...

Ya, but it basically melts it, it will round all hard edges (we spent so long making). I think sandpaper is the best bet...

That sound goods to me... basically time is not the problem, it's the "patience" one need to have, to get it finished ;) (and of course if your are happy about the way you finish something)!

Re: Mal Reynolds Pistol (3D Printed Kit)

It's been a few days, but work continues. This will get done this month! Just starting on prototype 1, printing base and handles

Stay tuned and thanks for being patient

Re: Mal Reynolds Pistol (3D Printed Kit)

It's still early, but here's part of prototype #1, should have the barrel done tomorrow:

Re: Mal Reynolds Pistol (3D Printed Kit)

The fit look nice! I always like 3D printed wood grips. They have a nice natural looking "grain".

Re: Mal Reynolds Pistol (3D Printed Kit)

LooKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!! One question though; the trigger guard looks a "little" different to me somehow. Could it be the angle of the shot???

Thanks! I agree, the guard needs to be tweaked a bit, version 1 prototype. On screen things look one way, you print it and you see what needs work. Here's with the barrel and (one of the) clips
