Trooper_Trent's R2-D2 Build Thread (2nd Attempt!)

I'm already trying to find a way to rig his utility arms to hold a bucket of candy so he can roll around the driveway and hand out candy.

I have seen it done. I'll have to see if I can find a pic. What I recall is that instead of using the arms, a rig was built to go in the slots where the arms go.

Hey Trent, he's looking great so far! I was just reading an article in Maker Magazine this afternoon at Barnes and Noble about making R2 replicas, I won't ask if what they said about how much an aluminum R2 unit goes for is accurate, I'll just say WOW! and I it sounds like a great treat that you're able to share this project with your son!

Hey, yeah that article was written by a club member as a basic intro into what's involved. The price quoted would be on the high end and would include lots of animated accessories (like perisope, opening panels, computer arm, etc) but mine is going to come in significantly under that. It's hard to say because every build is different but I've seen all aluminum droids have a total cost to be what I would consider an expected amount, and then I've seen others that just seemed WAY out there and over the top. There are definitely much cheaper ways of doing it.

YES!!!
OMG this had me so worried because I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, but I got it all set up for the first time, turned it all on, and HE WORKS!!!!
I'm so excited!

Not that fun of an update but I got the wheels attached to his center foot. I'm using Vex Robotics omni-wheels per recommendations from other Builder's Club members.
I think it's going to work really well. It seems very stable and smooth, and these things are heavy duty!

I also drew First Blood while drilling the metal brackets. Sliced my finger a bit when trying to pick off some metal shavings.
It's a good thing I had these extremely appropriate Band-Aids

Were those purchased specifically for this build?

what size wheels did you use? I have one 4" caster wheel on mine and he is kind of wobbly. I have wanted to fix it for some time.

Yes! they were! LOL. In fact, it is scientifically proven that using a Star Wars Band-Aid causes wounds to heal faster than ordinary Band-Aids. :)
As for the omni wheels, if you're on the R2 builders club forum search the "Electronics Radio Control and Drive System" section for "omni wheels". Not sure why it's there instead of the feet and legs section, but it's got all the info you need. People have discussed how awesome these things are. No more wobbles, no more face plants, traverse cracks, elevator gaps, and even railroad tracks like they weren't even there!
Actually, after 20+ pages of discussion, trial, and some confusion by people as to what exactly to get and how to assemble, I basically wrote out a step by step tutorial with links, parts, tools, everything. It's on page 28.

Nice write up on those. I bookmarked for future reference. I used r2 magnets to hold all my reference photos to my toolbox while building mine. :)

Do you have a build thread anywhere? I'd love to see it. We're pretty close. I'd love to bounce ideas off of you if you're still tinkering with your R2.

Not much of an update. Still waiting on parts before I can do much more.
BUT, I decided to switch from the ps2 controller to the PS3 navigation controller setup. These use Blue tooth instead of 2.4ghz IR. I swapped out the receiver and servo controller for an Arduino Mega and USB shield with a blue tooth dongle. That way I can hide the controller in my pocket or in the palm of my hand. It's much smaller and discrete.
I also got the half moons in for his feet and the center vents installed.
Going to be taking the next round of parts to the powder coater tomorrow!

Finally some more progress. Got the blue parts back from being painted so my son and I spent the afternoon assembling.
I'll be picking up the white parts today and getting his body finished over the weekend.
