Trooper_Trent's R2-D2 Build Thread (2nd Attempt!)

Ankle cylinders! Only need ankle details and shoulder hubs and he's finished.

OK! So he's officially DONE!! And just in time too. I was contacted to have him go on stage with Weird Al Yankovic at his Dallas concert this past Saturday!
It was a huge rush to get him completely finished, get a transport system setup and working, get him down there and do the show.

Got my final parts back from the powder coater on Thursday. But being that the last parts are his ankles and details it means I had to take his feet off. And to get his ankle rods correct, I also had to remove his legs, which means I had to put him up on the bench, which means to rest him on the bench so that he was stable, I had to remove his center foot (had to do that anyway for the cylinders) which means I had to remove his batteries in order to reach the ankle adapter bolts and lighten him up enough to lift him.
Whew! a LOT of work just to add the ankle cylinders.

Then onto Saturday... What a night! My son and I had a blast with R2 at the Concert. We had backstage passes and our ready room was right next to Al's dressing room. We got to sneak out front and watch part of the show. Aric got to hear his two favorite songs of Al's. R2 came out for the finale and danced with Al and the stormtroopers on stage and then we entertained a crowd of VIPs for 2 1/2 hours while he signed autographs and took photos. Once everyone was done, we got to have our photos taken with him. He signed the inside of R2's dome. It was a good night.

He was very quiet (he had just done a 2+ hour long show so that's understandable) but very friendly, polite, patient, and courteous. He obviously does this for the love of the fans and spent another 2 1/2 hours signing things and taking pictures.
