The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Just watched the Adam Savage video with my wife a little while ago, and she was very impressed. Now she totally gets why I'm so giddy about it. So I won't get in trouble for spending the money. :p

I notice Chris is bald in more recent appearances, a testament to how long this project has been going, but seriously I was hoping it was a fashion choice and not something else.

I see the indicator lights in those photos are still blue, I much prefer that although it looks like they are now clear in favorer of having different colors. But, most of the time mine will be turned off and sitting on a shelf so I would prefer the LEDs to be blue.
Chris says in the YourGeekFix video that you can leave it plugged in and running, at about 9:15 in the video. You could plug it in and display it in gray mode with the lights set to blue, and the moire locked with the backlight turned off.

yes I saw that, at least you have that option, but leaving it on wears on the unit and costs electricity.

Regardless, I would prefer the blue LEDs. If there is one thing I could change that would be it.

I can live with the dark screen, like the Master Replicas Tricorder. I actually remove the batteries from a lot of props I display, (all of my Master Replicas) so I don't have to deal with battery leakage issues. Granted Wand replicas use lithium batteries and you can't even remove the phaser battery, but in that case you need to perform regular maintenance, at least 4 times a year to make sure the batteries don't die.

When I think about data disks that actually spark data, I’m not overly concerned about clear domes. If I had to, I could get some Tamaya translucent blue paint and paint them. The lit colors would still come though.

When Wand first announced this, I tucked away $300 for the release. I’ve now ‘borrowed from’ and repaid my fund no less than, five times. ;) And, it will have been worth it many times over!(y)

Chris Barnardo said there are many color options for the crown LED’s. I hope all blue is one of them.

In the recent videos, when they used the “Grey Screen” setting, the jewels all became blue.

Bit disappointed they decided to change the colors of the discs again - back to more of the candy colored style they originally had chosen - rejecting the "helm switch bank” scheme they said (and showed) they were going to use after a bunch of us pointed out the issues with the originally chosen disc colors and how the "switch bank" colors were the perfect because they were both canon colors and canon choices for the exact number of sequential colors for device functions as needed by the tricorder.

Original Colors:

So all they did was drop the purple and darker grey color from the original choices, while going for even more candy-colored green and blue versions of the original colors. :(

Strange decision as this was really a no brainer given the 8 samples provided to the Wand Co.

I can't get worked up about the disk colors, but I am mildly curious as to why--was it aesthetic, or was it related to the color sensor?

Given all their other attempts at canon accuracy and importing other canon designs from the Enterprise into the Tricorder design - and given the fact that they HAD chosen canon colors after the issue had been raised - reversing course on all of that feels like an incredibly unforced error.

I posted that question on their blog. While Chris answered many questions before and after it, he chose not to answer this question for some reason. (I have now posted the question again. Maybe ask as well. If enough people inquire, he might spill the beans on the thinking behind the change.)

I can't imagine it was related to the color sensor, though, since they made slight variations to the "switch bank" colors when they chose them, specifically so the colors would work properly with the color sensor.

What is truly bizarre though is that, in the Adam Savage video, Chris explicitly states these final colors were chosen *because* of what the "fans" said on their blog - ie he's acting as if these *are* the "switch bank" colors they chose in response to our comments.

For something that I'm not going to see 99.999999% of the time, I can't really get worked up about what color the disks are. I'm more concerned that when the Tricorder is turned off, it will not have the blue jewels.

As I said, given all their other attempts at canon accuracy and importing other canon designs from the Enterprise into the Tricorder design - and given the fact that they HAD chosen canon colors because the fans had raised a valid issue - reversing course on all of that feels like an incredibly unforced error.

I'd say that is an example of the same issue of 'approach' - the only difference being that, since production hasn't started yet supposedly, it would be far easier (and wouldn't cost any time) to simply change the choice of paint colors for the discs back to what they had said they would be giving us, than retooling and reprogramming for the jewels.

I was just going to say that--the disk sides will be hidden 99% of the time. As for the jewels, I'm probably going to display mine plugged in and in gray mode, so it's not likely to be an issue for me.

That is of course an option but where I plan on displaying it I will not be able to plug it in. It would be nice if they had a way to set the gray mode with blue jewels and then be able to turn it off but I don't think that won't happen.
