The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

I really thought Wand (way back when?) had casually mentioned a total production run of several separate batches adding up to 10,000 units. I’m sure how they planned to divide those individual runs is also tied to their contract? The unforeseen tariff situation likely played into the equation and is probably part of the reason they’re stepping back to observe for a while. Then again, maybe that number is just a collective hallucination?

Ok, I have no personal knowledge of Chinese manufacturing practices. I was only repeating what another person had posted. Regardless, maybe they did commit to a smaller initial run. That would just make the situation worse. Whatever the initial amount, it was clearly an underestimate of what the demand would be and Chris’s reply doesn’t commit to do a second run. He only says that if there is sufficient interest the might do second run.

There is more than to it than is being discussed here

Stay tuned……

I'm wondering if at the current price they are very likely losing money on this and trying to decide how to proceed. If they do a second wave priced $100 higher, how many interested parties would that eliminate, and can they then justify the expense of another batch?

I seem to remember that statement being made in response to doing another run of phasers, and that they weren’t sure there was that much interest in it.

They might have to raise prices, especially given the direct and uncontrolled competition with fleaBay resellers.

And yet people always talk about wanting more phasers and communicators ... especially ones where the battery is more accessible.

I found this from March, it looks like they’re working to the plan. It seems like the demand question is clear.

Hi Chris:

Is there a cutoff number of the amount of the Tricorders that you will be selling? In other words, Will there be a certain limited amount initially produced? After this production runs out and/or are all sold out, will more Tricorders be produced and sold in the future? Or, will this be a “limited issue” production?

In the future, if these are all sold out, will there be more upgraded/updated Tricorders later produced? And also, will future library discs be updated and/or added to the library?

Thanks!
~Tom

We are producing an initial amount of Tricorders. If demand is strong enough to warrant a second production run then we will make more. In that respect, this is not a production run, limited to a certain arbitrary number. If we produce more Tricorders in the future they are likely to be exactly the same. The discs have a mechanical play value and do not in themselves store information, they are meant to look as though they store information, but are merely used to trigger the different Tricorder functions.

I can’t wait for these to start shipping. Does anyone want to make an educated guess on how many of these Wand will make/sell?

My guess? At least 40k, judging from the registration number someone posted earlier.

We’re not making 40k Tricorders (yet). The registration numbers are not an exact match one to one for the fans that registered.

So much for the ‘don’t buy from scalpers on eBay, Don’t worry, we’re making plenty, enough for everyone who wants one to get one’ now it’s ‘We made an initial amount and may make a second run if demand is strong enough’. Who’s to say what they may consider “strong enough demand” is?
