Reportedly, that's where Nimoy kept his lollypops. I think the battery is going to be in there in the Wand unit, plus some extra space above it. Not sure if you'll be able to fit a med scanner in there if you get one separately. But on the show, McCoy did keep his scanner in there sometimes. I think in This Side of Paradise he does that. Someone slap me if I'm wrong. In fact, someone slap me regardless. I'm kinda kinky that way.

In all seriousness, I seem to recall the doors close magnetically.

I think their license requires functionality. I've never heard the thermometer idea--interesting! You should go on the blog page and bounce that off of Chris Barnardo!

This just in. Because of a new idea for another gadget for the Tricorder it is going to take another couple of years before it is released.

That is just fantastic.
I don't care if this thing is behind schedule - or later than expected. I think it's going to be a hardcore tribute to the OS by some hardcore fans.
