The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Got mine yesterday; two days ahead of schedule. It very nice although one thing is bothering me and I'm not sure if it's normal or not. When ever the scanning sound plays I get a popping sound from the speaker about every second. It's not super loud but I hear it and I don't feel like I should with a prop replica of this caliber. Normal or should I go through an exchange?
Others have mentioned this and it is something that TWC is aware of and are looking into a software fix for it.

Got mine. Fun toy. :)

It appears from a Chris answer to a Micro SD card slot question that the Edith Keeler imagery is using the MJPEG format (M standing for Motion).

Admittedly…I have yet to bust open my Tricorder’s to touchy-feely. They are in my Star Trek collection tubs for now. I’m short on space and have to rotate my collection’s.

Anyway….In preparation for the possibility that a software upgrade may allow to use the micro SD card slot to play files….video, audio, still images, etc….. I’ve already managed to put together the entire ST series, Animated series, and Movies (7) in an MP4 format at a 320x240 resolution. The quality is just fine for me, imo. It all presently fits on a 32Gb Micro SD Card.

I’m hoping for the MP4 format in addition to the already loaded MJPEG format. Although if necessary, I’ll use an MP4 to MJPEG converter. MP4 is widely used….even over other format’s like AVI etc.

I was going to test the Micro SD card slot with different file formats to see if one or more gets recognized and shows the inserted card indicator changing in the Engineering status ….. but I’m lazy and not ready to break out my Tricorder’s.

Since the world doesn’t wait on me :) ….. I’m sure someone will test it and report on it…somewhere, if not on this forum.

Peace

You've go the right idea, FANATICO . When I first started messing around with mine, I was wondering if the tricorder will end up similar to the lightsaber cores used for Proffie, Xeno3, Crystal F/X and others where folks can home brew content to add to their own hilts or offer to the wider community. It would be great to have our TWC Tricorders incorporate fan made functions like new animated screens, the ability to play heavily scaled down video/audio content, and more.

Yes, there's going to be a software fix for this. Apparently every tricorder has this but it varies in volume among units. I never noticed mine until it was pointed out. It's very quiet, but now that I've heard it, I can't unhear it.

How do you think the software fix will be implemented? Obviously, I highly doubt TWC will send out Micro SD cards with the fix….on request of the user…because of time consuming logistics of course…especially if there’s more than one update/fix throughout the years ahead… imo.

That leaves…..making the fix downloadable from the TWC website and transferred into the tricorder using a USB-C cable from a pc, laptop, etc to do the transfer.

Or download the fix from the TWC website (support webpage) onto your own Micro SD card then insert the card into the tricorder card slot.

I don’t know what the popping noise sounds like….but software may not fix it….it may need a hardware fix such as filtering capacitor(s), noise reduction etc.….who’s going to get out the o’l soldering iron?

Who knows at this point how the fix will actually be implemented or if it will make a noticeable difference to the hearing of the individual user.

“For now, the USB-C socket is for battery charging. However, we are building in the infrastructure for it to be potentially used for data transfer in the future. Creating that extra functionality is an extra development workload and we are working out if and when we can do it”.

Someone posted somewhere (either here, FB, or the blog) that they plugged the USB-C into their computer and it recognized “something” was plugged in.

Here’s to popping noise. It sounds like the found FX is on a 3 second loop.

Did you try the scan sound without the moiré spinning? If possible turn it off and try….

I thought someone previously posting that the sound of the moiré was also being picked up by the microphone in the recording log function.

Maybe it’s bleeding to the scan sound as well?

I don’t think it’s only a software fix, imo…audio is a balancing act involving input and output which involves a combination of software and hardware. Analogy….Consider for a moment the use of a sound engineering board of a studio, your tweaking slides, dials and switching ala hardware. So it would be for development before miniaturization to put onto a circuit board.

Of course I could be wrong….

Yup… the pulse sound is still present with the moire turned off. And the audio sensor does pick up the moire motor a bit.

I just noticed something new that I've never caught before. When it's charging, if you turn it on, the three lights light up in blue-green, green, and red--the same colors as the buttons on screen. I tried to take a pic, but the lights just blow out even if I stop way down--damn 21st Century photo sensors! :p

But that's only if you have the Planet disk in position 1--change the disk, and both the left screen button and left light change to the new disk's color! Man, it reminds me of what my late mother used to say, but it's in Spanish and NSFW.

Curiosity…so they’ve determined it requires a software fix…..does the popping itself raise and lower while raising the volume and then lowering the volume? Or does it stay at a steady volume no matter if you raise or lower the volume…
Just checked. The popping goes up and down with the volume setting. On low volume it’s harder to hear but definitely still there. Chris B said the sound effect is on a loop and you can hear the pop where it restarts.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s about finding and eliminating the particular causes of the frequency(s) of the pop.

For now consider it a metronome feature….you may be able to use it while whistling Star Trek theme music :)

I really wish no one had mentioned the clicking noise with the scanning sound. I never noticed it on mine until it was mentioned and I saw a video where you could here it. I then checked mine and it was there and now I can't stop hearing it because I'm looking for it. It is not a big bother but it is there.
