The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Here’s a decent back shot…

Would you be dissatisfied if the Wand unit didn’t have a actual leather strap? Black dyed on one side and natural brown/tan rawhide on the other side?
Not at all. To be perfectly accurate, such a strap would have to be as short as the original leather straps were, and I've never liked that look. I prefer the low-slung straps, even if they were no longer leather. Plus I'm partial to the stitching. I just like the look.

I read ya……

Fans who are body deep into Star Trek Canon would differ with you. If it’s not from exactly as it was seen on the TV screen, it’s not the legitimate look, and fantasy from fantasy.

I’m a bit more forgiving since they were all mostly static props with special effects added in post production. Even the Wand tricorder isn’t canon.

I'm sure they would differ with me, as would a younger me. :)

BUT, even though yes, the Wand tricorder steps out of canon with things like the rotating, backlit moire, and the replaceable disks, the strap is not one of those areas. It's a reproduction of the strap that was on Greg Jein's hero, which was as it was after the Desilu prop shop took the Wah heroes apart for recasting, and then apparently did away with the leather straps in favor of the leatherette or vinyl straps with the stitching we saw after the first season.

Although I seem to remember we saw stitched straps on a tricorder late in the first season--maybe someone can dig that up? I don't have time just now. Maybe Operation Annihilate?

In any case, after the recasting was done, the stitched straps on the heroes became canon.

OK, not Operation Annihilate. But this still does clearly illustrate why I don't like the leather straps as much. The length looks really awkward to me.

EDIT-- I just checked the production order, and it turns out Operation Annihilate was the last 1st season episode shot as well as last broadcast. So no stitched straps in the 1st season after all.

Looks like I'm developing Trekheimers... :p

The original Tricorder straps were likely as short as they were because they were originally not intended to be a “scanning device”, for Spock and Bones, but were intended to be a device used by the Ship’s Yeoman…the straps were likely sized for Janice Rand, when originally assembled.

Interesting point, I never knew that. And it does hang lower on Whitney's hip.

If one wants to adjust or even change out the strap…..remove the screw(s) on the side body panel(s) to access the strap ends and then cut strap to length desired or swap strap of your choice based on fit.

More on the original intent of the Tricorder:

The image of the tricorder, and particularly The Original Series version of it, is so attached to both Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock in the public mind that anyone would be forgiven for believing it was specifically invented for them. While the tricorder would certainly become associated with both as time went on, it actually had rather humble beginnings - as an accessory for Yeoman Rand.

Gene Roddenberry suggested to Robert Justman, in a memo from 1966, that Rand be provided with an over-the-shoulder recording device, one that would double up as a scanner, so that she would be as able to record Captain's Logs, etc while on an away mission, as she would have been on the bridge.

Roddenberry also openly stated that it would be a fun accessory for 'female-type children' to have as well, which certainly indicated he intended the original device to be something akin to a specifically targeted toy for girls, as opposed to one of the most important devices in Star Trek's history.”

What's that from? I've never read that.

I could see targeting women and girls….as a purse.

A day late and a dollar short for dead Roddenberry … it’s already been sold as such
