The Ultimate Luke ANH Graflex Research & Discussion Thread

This is the second (of three) real RAF clamp that we know exists today..

As you can see, this one also sports a classic “early folmer” style lever, exactly like Nick's one and as widely expected in my previous posts.

Thanks Sym-Cha for collaboration!

Here are some side by side pictures of one of these chrome screw/chrome bunny ears flashes and what I guess is slightly later variation already with the common screw and bunny ears. I find it hard to tell the difference in the bunny ears finish on the pictures, although it is clear if you hold them both in your hands. The screw finish difference is easier to spot.

Has anyone brought up the possibility that the two larger rivets are actually the same size as the smaller rivets, but with rivet washers underneath them?
....
In general I also feel that this should be too much hassle for them to bother, but since you have some - see if you can match better the angle and the light.

There's quite a sharp shadow separating the disc from the flash handle on that picture. Both are metal and shiny, but despite that the highlights don't obscure it ... I think we should see two such shadows if there was a second step from the washer to the actual rivet head.

Also check if it could be a match when compared with this:

A stock Master Replicas prop, because The Mouse is cheap and lazy.

Of course, STAR WARS has been bad fanfic for many years, so I’ll stick with studying the real props, thanks. Also, I already have an MR, so it’s screen-accurate.
I don’t agree they’d use a MR as they made new sabers for the films why not here?

Obi-Wans has the same design as ROTS but looks as if the diameter might be larger than the one from ROTS

The Graflex is definitely a MR. Check out this post by Slyfox:

As far as Obi's saber, everything from screenshots lines up with it being a MR and I believe coolhandluked -who has worked on the recent shows- confirmed it as well.

I disagree that it was cheap and lazy. The fact that anyone has to ask what it is shows that it did its job. It looks more like the ANH prop than the ROTS version does! What works works. Getting that extra .0001% accuracy for a 3-second shot would be a foolish waste of production time and money, no matter what the budget is.

Quick bump for this thread and I’d like to share this rather nice Folmer (no patent) Graflex that I received recently. I’ve been after a ANH version since it was discovered which type of Folmer was used in the promo shots. This one has the tells, except for the RAF stamping. It’s not in the best condition but should make a good prop once converted.

If that’s rust on the red button, a little steel wool and some renaissance wax should protect it!

Beautiful graflex, it’s so shiny! Any scratches are just accurate weathering

Yes, there is a little rust. Ok I’ll try that. Thank you for the input.

How can you tell Fomler sidebars from Patent sidebars?
There's one difference I'm aware of :

If I remember correctly - early ones are punched two times with a smaller circle-shaped tool, later ones with one bigger oval-like tool. Some really early ones have very faint ones or no marks at all - that probably explains why sometimes the sidebars are missing like on the V2. That's only on the one with the nut though.

I was looking at this meme posted over in the Off-Topic section on the RPF when I thought maybe I saw something.

That clamp sure looks super shiny, and at this resolution and distance I feel like I should be able to see the square tab openings, stamped lines, and maybe some part of the Graflex logo.

If you told me that clamp was covered in chrome or aluminum tape I’d believe you.

Obviously there is no tape on the clamp in the photos with just Mark and saber i.e. the ‘toe pic’ or Chronicles photos, but that doesn’t mean if there was tape during filming either the tape was removed or maybe the clamp was switched out.
