Ryan Gosling 'K' - Blade Runner 2049!

You would be correct about that, it is closer to the right image
i ordered various colors/items from them. will keep you all posted - in the meantime, I still think Mechanismo's find on Amazon is the closest thing to SA. these new options might be closer but hard to tell with the lighting etc.

Hi there

A lil late. Lol. Yes that article is basically the bible om this thread. Or at least the best roadmap we have :)
ahhhh - I'm pretty new to the forum and being very efficient with my time whilst working nights from home to browse the forums and test myself haha.... thanks for letting me know.

I hear you loud and clear. I spent hours reading the posts that came before I joined the forum but I don't regret it it was a really helpful and good use of my time with respect to first finding the right coat and then tailoring it correctly. You'll find some very useful info here but you're right it is time consuming

Well, it has been a productive--and frustrating--past few days. I have a few updates, some positive, some negative.
As far as Soul Revolver goes, after a lot of back and forth with them over email, I managed to convince them to send me some additional magnets to install in the coat, so that I could match the stock 3 magnets that they included. Understand, I had asked, twice, prior to ordering to ensure that this coat came with additional magnets for the enclosure, which they insisted, as the version 2 coat, it did. It very much did not, and there was a fabric scuff along the front lapel. I brought up both issues--the fabric scuff, they ignored. The magnets, they claimed, they couldn't sell me because they needed them to fulfill their other orders due to the expected order volume from the sale they're currently having. Then they changed their mind, and said they could send me the magnets. When I asked how many they were sending, they said 5 sets--this is the amount I anticipated for the body of the coat, but as I explained several times, I would need an additional 6th magnet--not a set, but an individual one--to add to the collar. Apparently they were sending the 5 magnet sets free, but if I wanted a single, additional magnet, somehow that would run me in the realm of 30 euros (I'm not sure how that math works). Honestly, it feels like being nickel and dimed at the cost of this garment. They finally told me they were shipping this week. When I asked for a tracking number, they told me they would be shipped by Royal Mail. I asked instead that they ship via FedEx, as the coat did, because Royal Mail is slow internationally, especially post-covid, we're heading into the colder months here on the east coast, and I was hoping to wear this coat closed in the next month. I explained that I was even willing to pay for faster shipping. This went ignored, and today they shipped via Royal Mail.

As far as their service goes, I am...less than impressed. Yes, they make a solid coat, and the shell finish, sherpa notwithstanding, is excellent, but from the beginning it's generally been a "can't-do" attitude. They're selling what's labeled as a replica piece, but refuse to make any alterations to that pattern for accuracy when the information is being made readily available to them for free. I would be more forgiving of this, but at the price point, I could order something from Magnoli, custom-tailored to my frame. The alterations for this coat, material cost aside, will run a few hundred dollars easily, and while I'm willing to do them (I already bought the coat), I can't imagine buying from Soul Revolver again. I'm not angry at them. I'm mostly just disappointed, because what would be minor concessions on their end would make a truly amazing piece, and I don't understand the reluctance either to do them or to offer them as alterations for customers, especially at this price point.

That's the less good news. The alternative good news: ive spent the past several days or so looking into shearling options, trying to find a real shearling option that might offer a close or similar appearance to the fur on ryan goslings jacket while offering the durability that only real shearling can, so that it hopefully wouldn't have to be replaced for quite some time. I reached out to an American-based distributor, and although they don't normally do this, when I explained what the material was for, and the scope of this project, they agreed to send me some samples, with the caveat that I upload detailed photos here for the rpf members (and obviously give them a shout-out). The samples are in the mail, and once I have them, I can take photos of the various options and let you all decide. They're not inexpensive given what they are, but if this works the way I'm hoping it will, they'll be a nice alternative option for the soul revolver jacket collar.

Agreed on all points but also, some things are just not big enough to stress over. I sent you a link to a very good replacement magnet. So you could have just used that. I have 5 magnets from SR and 10 from Amazon and they are virtually identical. As for SR, if enough people complained the way you and I did, they would change their attitude. As for Magnoli yhey use waxed cotton. Plus its dimensions are significantly off as mechanismo has pointed out several times on this thread.

Thanks for your feedback, johncarbon1991 . I can imagine how taxing this whole back-and-forth with Soul Revolver has been. And I agree: the coat's construction, color, texture look outstanding. Leaving the the shearling and magnets issue aside, if SR only A) altered/tapered its collar dimensions slightly, B) shifted the collar placement and C) structured their shoulder panels...voilà! Job done. Also, as you point out, it's a bit infuriating that all these improvements that we succinctly point out here and certainly ones that can only vastly improve their product are met with derision or outright refusal. This is why I would never spend that kind of money buying a coat from them. They simply don't deserve it.

But with all that said, and as I told Shahrooz the extra cost, the alterations, the attention to detail, sourcing material etc means once you're done, you'll be wearing a truly unique coat that's way closer to the screen coat than any other. Upwards and onwards!

Agreed 100%. On the more positive side, Mechanismo and I have found what i would cautiously call the best faux shearling material thus far - at least in pictures. Anxiously waiting for the item to arrive to determine how accurate the pictures are. Will share information once we have confirmed.

COLLAR SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

Hi guys,
Leaving aside the issue of the benefits of shifting/repositioning SR's collar, I'd like to tackle the dimensions, shape and specs of the collar itself. Shahrooz was kind enough to provide me with measurements off his SR coat collar and with that, I was able to come up with a scale diagram of both this collar and my custom collar. They are as follows (measurements in centimeters).

So just off the bat, a couple things: we can clearly see that SR's collar doesn't have that funnel, curved shape which is especially noticeable when wrapped around the face as well as the custom collar having a little bit more room too since it's almost 2 centimeters longer.

I think it's fairly obvious too that the film collar is curved/tapered, which means that the collar edges should be slightly narrower/shorter than its widest area (just behind the neck). This is clearly visible in this shot:

Soul Revolver's collar edges are as wide as the entire collar itself, which is incorrect.

All this being said, my custom collar specs -while a fairly close approximation- are still not 100% screen accurate (there are a few changes I'd make in hindsight). This very odd placing of the film collar, for example, clearly shows it's even bigger/wider and more curved (?).

Hopefully Egon will finally get to the bottom of this!

Cheers!

stellar work, as always. question is, is there anything to be done to improve the collar on the SR other than shifting it? if there is (within the parameters of what we're dealing with in terms o dimensions and such), it would be best to do it during the collar repositioning process.

question is, is there anything to be done to improve the collar on the SR other than shifting it?

That's a tough one... and a great question for a tailor..., In a way, I'd say yes. For starters, SR's collar edges could be narrowed (17.5 and 18 respectively) to 17 cm on either end, thus making the collar more curved and less rectangular. The bottom edge could also be shortened from 66 to 64.2 to make more funnel-like. However, the custom collar, as shown, is both wider at the top and higher behind the neck, which is something that cannot be fixed on the SR collar 'as is', obviously.

In any event, I've superimposed both collars to show you what I mean:

I can't wait to see your discoveries on the faux shearling material
we've made SIGNIFICANT progress. It has come down to two coats now - essentially waiting the arrival of the last viable option next week. This is apart from johncarbon1991's search who may find something better yet. Fingers crossed that we will finally know next week what the best material for replacing the fur is.

Amazing news, cannot wait to see the results of all your detective work. Really appreciate everyone's time and effort on this, hugely grateful to all involved and really excited to see you share your findings.

Thank you for your kind words, hellboy12000. Means a lot, actually. I have to second your sentiments. This has definitely been a team effort and I am really just grateful to have been a part of it. At the risk of sounding corny, but hey the holidays are coming up, am really proud about the solidarity, teamwork and kindness everyone here has shown. I benefitted from the help of many early on when I was deciding on a coat, including your kind gesture in responding to my many questions and am very pleased if even one person in some small way benefits from the work we put into this great coat. Talk soon.

Ok. A few updates. First off, full disclaimer: these are not professional grade photos in proper lighting by any means. Unfortunately usps came super late in the day, so I wasn't able to properly photograph all the samples in natural daylight (but will aim to do so later this week). I took these shots under a white led lamp.

This sherpa is a product called Mohair. Essentially it's what teddy bears used to be made from before sherpa shearling (imitation fur) was as common of a thing. The distributor sent me about 5 samples to choose from, and out of them, this one was closest in terms of overall texture and drape. They offer a variety of colors, including darker and more cold-toned browns than this, but I can tell you having seen it in person that this color is much less warm-toned than it appears in this photo. I think the very warm toned color might be my Samsung phone camera attempting to adjust in contrast to the other colors in the shot.

On the left is the sherpa coat Mechanismo recommended from Amazon, in the middle beneath it is the stock shearling Soul Revolver uses, and on the right is what my distributor sent me in a color described as "chocolate" (they also offer a darker brown than this, which I think would be closer). I can tell you that the backing to this is super-thin, and the sherpa overall is less...smushy, for lack of a better term, compared to what Soul Revolver uses, which I think would result in a more comfortable wear around the face when wearing the collar up. All that said, I think the mohair needs to be thicker and less sparse. I wrote the seller to ask if they had any thicker options in a similar drape, but I'll let you all be the judge. I'm including three photos, just so you can see how drastically the color changes depending on lighting. Those are all the same sample of fabric.
