Repainting a MPC Millennium Falcon ***FINISHED*** with tons of pictures

Filled in gaps and bad edges with the putty. Hopefully I can get it sanded well enough.
Stuff is messy and starts drying really fast, and I probably shouldn't have been breathing it in so much.

Reprimed it with the white. Despite the space there on the bottom, it looks a lot better.
Maybe I should add a few rough spots like its damaged.
Still a few more parts I want to add a little more putty to.

Even in the state of incomplete....I really wanted to run around the backyard "flying" it. I do a pretty good Falcon with my voice.

Cats looking at something....maybe wondering why the dead Christmas tree is still laying there.
Because I've just not been motivated to chop it up and burn.

If you still want those panels on the docking ports use your guide to cut them from styrene sheet and glue them on.

All week been doing little stuff here and there. Prime it, let it dry, paint it, let it dry.

Got the cockpit with Han and Chewie on.

Today got the cockpit nose glued on.
Seeing as I'll have to do the final painting, had to add all the tape first, and then once thats all done, carefully remove it, as there is no plastic(glass).

Bit of a gap, but top side isn't too bad.
looking at the studio model, I see there is a line around it, but less than this.

The bottom piece has a much worst gap. I'll fill it with the putty, and maybe before its fully dry, I can attempt a new less harsh line around it.

Over all, its looking pretty good.
Just need to put back on the dish and guns.
Then comes the main part that MAKES it the Falcon....the paint and weathering.

Pretty much all week been working on this, between adding filler, priming, sanding, more filler, more sanding, and finally getting the base coat on.
I'm now at the point of being just about finished.
So from just pictures, not a whole lot of an update, but its going on.
20230528_233637.jpg

This looks a lot better, and from there, any weathering can fix up the rest.

Once I know for sure all the spraying ia done, I can get the blue tape out of the cockpit and hope that it covered everything correctly.

Didn't get a pic yet, but just sprayed the gun turrets and dish.
Also tonight, decided to trim some of the trees in the backyard and also cut up the Christmas tree thats been laying out there for 5 months.
Nice mess, which is a mix of an old swing set, the Christmas tree, and random stuff from the fireworks show last year.

Ate some sausage warmed over the fire.
Christmas tree flavor.

Decided that the base color was good enough and last night started.
Went through the few paints I had, then also got a few more at Walmart since I was there.
Left one I had, 3 on right are new.
Just realized the lightest one is satin and not matte.
Its not looking to be an issue.
If anything, I can hit it with a flat clear spray later on if even needed.

First I started with the red. Only had a pretty bright red, so I mixed some colors and painted it on. While close to what I had in mind, still off a tad bit.
20230531_005448.jpg

Later on I remixed again and painted over it, but with some water mixed it so it wasn't too strong.
Hard to tell here, but I think its better.

Between using ILM reference pics, also have a collection of models built here and just off google. Its tricky to know for sure, since theres lighting differences, monitor differences, and the original models have probably faded..(looks like it in pics anyways)
While things that stand out, like the red painted panels are pretty easy to get right, (although my original paint job still messed some up), other parts can be harder to tell.
I see little differences between somenof these fan built Falcons.
So still goong to make it my own while keeping the feel of the original best I can.

For the red, heres everything I ended up mixing.

So for now, heres where I'm at.
So much to still do.
Some of the parts I might lighten, and others darken. We'll see.

For now, super tired and the kitchen is about to be redone, so need to try and get some sleep. Been waiting for almost 4 months waiting for this to happen.

Wow, I didn’t think the MPC kit could look that good!! Can’t wait to see the weathering
Thanks.
I plenty people have taken this kit even farther with updates.
I didn't really plan to do as much as I did, but I end up always doing so, plus, everyone giving me more ideas for updates.

Looking Very good Friend Paint work is coming along nicely
Thanks. While theres plenty I can paint alright, model work, especially something like the iconic Falcon us tricky.
With all the colors, patterns and layers, it can be bit intimidating.
Some guys out there can practically match it at 100%, or near close to ILMs.
So just doing what I can, and while hand brushing it all at this point, its going good so far.
I tend to notice that some people with an air brush over dirty it in places.
Thats basically what I did back then, just also by hand.
So this time I plan to go much lighter on the dirt and grim.

Han was also fixing the thing, you have to think he hit a space ship wash every now and then.....righr?

As the kitchen is being redone, the guy is here painting it...so a perfect time for me to paint as well.

With all the reference pics I found, I need more monitors.
Everyone pretty much paints theres slightly different, between the ways to applie the paint, to which panels and even shades of color.
I do notice lookimg at the actually ILM 5 footer, that it has a very washed out look. Even photos from back then.
So I will try mixing a watered down white color and probably try going over it all, and the weather more on top of that.
Not screen accurate, but get any type of toy look off it.

I might suggest rather than mixing in white, you want to "fade" the color afterwards.

This can be achieved in a few ways, but all start with painting the regular color first

One would be to go over the panels with some very light sanding. That is can hard to control though

Another is to go over the painted with some thinned whiteish/grey oil paint or pastel chalks

ILM does it by "mist coating" which is spraying super thinned layers of paint that is barely more than a mist over whole areas.

Any of those, or even combos of those will produce that weathered/faded/ worn look over just simply tinting the color white as that effect should be applied all over, and is not just white, but can be a grime/blackish color in spots as well.

I think the key to a successful paint job for the Falcon is by tying all the various patchwork stuff together to look like it was weathered over as a whole instead if individual panels

I was thinking about a light mist from a can. But I also tried a very watered down white over parts, and dabbing most up with a paper towel. Between both ways, I think it should work out.
I'll probably also mix up some paint and water down so its not all stright white.
Layers apon layers is what seems to really help as well.
Looking at how it was before I started here, already a ton of improvement.
