Technically, I was just a wee babe in 1977, but by around 1980, I was aware of Star Wars and wondering what all this stuff was about Luke Skylight and Dark Vader.

Then my dad's friend recorded a VHS of Star Wars off of the old Prism movie network and gave it to us, I watched it, and that pretty much became every Sunday morning for me: Star Wars on VHS while I played with my GI Joe guys in whatever Star Wars vehicles I had (Star Wars figures did kinda suck due to lack of articulation, but they had the best vehicles).

I was born May 13, 1977, but I'm still going to answer. I saw it at a friend's house either on VHS or a tv airing around 1980. I clearly remember Darth Vader's entrance on Leia's ship surrounded by Stormtroopers. That really stuck in my head. I think I did see SW in the theater at some point around then, not sure when it was in theaters again, but I clearly remember seeing the other two in the theater.

For those of us that were around in '77, what was your very first introduction to Star Wars?
A TV ad similar to this (but not this exact one), that was simply a cut-down of the first theatrical trailer, with incomplete effects and temp music.

It gave a creepier/darker/moodier impression than the film actually has. It isn't bright and fun and exhilarating like the movie.

And yes, I wanted to go!

That was typical for the period before ANH brought back the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers thing. Any sci-fi movie that had a tangible realistic visual tone (not 'Barbarella') was gonna be pretty serious & dystopian. The studio assumed that was the way to market ANH until it hit theaters and the word-of-mouth got out.

The soundtrack does so much to set the tone of ANH. The soundtracks of ESB & ROTJ are still great but they don't seem quite as critical to shaping how the audience perceived the movie by then. Some of it is just due to the existence of the previous movies, but I think it's more than that. ANH is a bit more timeless and "generic" than any of the others (for lack of a better word). The events, storyline, imagery, etc. People have called ANH a mashup of past Hollywood stuff like 'The Wizard of Oz' and cowboy westerns. But ESB & ROTJ are absolutely their own movies. I think ANH is a notch closer to being a blank slate for the soundtrack & filmmaking to set the tone.

I don't think the studio was putting that much thought into the initial wave of marketing. They didn't have enough faith in it to go the bother of conceiving of a campaign mood. They just slapped together a couple of TV ads using the trailer, which in turn was made using a workprint during a period before Williams' score was added. The music, from Vivaldi's "Winter" portion of Four Seasons, was in the temp track of the film itself at the time.

They responded pretty quickly, though, after it was an immediate hit. Ads made later in '77 have the Williams score.

Interestingly, "Winter" was also used for the first ESB trailer. Since obviously they could've used Williams music from the first score but chose not to, the moodiness of that one would have to have been more intentional.

Talking about advertising and all....I was just remembering all the hype for Episode I, and that it was 25 years ago now....totally crazy thought.
The first major trailer came out with the movie, Meet Joe Black, which came out November 2nd, 1998.
Since I worked at a movie theater, but not working that day, and friend and I were going to see another film that started a little later....but knowing Meet Joe Black was showing the Star Wars Episode trailer that day for the first time, we went in there first. The theater was quite packed.....and after the trailer....like at least half of everyone got up and left....lol.
My friend and I laughed at how many people paid the full price to just watch the trailer.
Even though the movie gets a lot of hate, you can't deny all the hype was fun to live through, especially being a fan far before this one came out.
For the actual movie....well, I think thats been talked about to death by now....lol.

Nah, just reminiscing Jedi Temple Youngling Bash 2005.

Does Anakin even know that Boba is an untampered clone? I also assumed Boba with his helmet would muffle his voice to hide his identify.

Although given the fact that all clone troopers were all Boba Fett-tier soldiers but programmed to obey commands and be more fearless and Fett is one of the best bounty hunters in the universe, how strong was the clone trooper army? Too bad we dont see a live action of the actual wars.

I would think that Anakin/Vader could tell Boba was clone in the Force. Some of the old EU mentions that Jedi could tell individual clones in the Force, but they could tell overall which ones were clones.

From the FB page where I found this, the logic was that since the graphics for this and the Death Star were being made before the movie was finished (remember the Death Star Graphics are incorrect also), this could've been made when the Falcon was still going to have a rotating cockpit and fly like a Sunfish swims, the top graphics could indeed not be a TIE fighter.

But please!!!! I do not want to think this!! I have spent 47 years thinking this was a TIE fighter.

So, if Princess Leia was still part of the Senate, why did her crew aboard the Tantive IV fight off the Stormtroopers?

The Empire had her dead to rights as being a Rebel at that point, so they had no choice but to fight. Especially after seeing Rogue One, we know that Vader personally saw her ship at the battle.

I'm honestly curious what the next SW movie (of any kind) will be. And when.

Will Ep#9 end up being the last SW movie that ever has a big theater opening?

I wouldn't rule it out.

Consider the usual timelines of getting a big tentpole movie done.
Consider Disney's habit of delaying big movies to re-shoot the whole thing.
It's 2024 and it's not even clear what their next SW movie will be yet.

I give it 2027 when they have something ready. If a war breaks out between Nelson Peltz & Bob Iger then it could be longer. Meanwhile, movie theaters are dying fast.

I was thinking about watching it too. That's the only Disney one I have a Bluray of. I got rid of cable about 3 years ago, so that's the last time I watched any of the movies when they'd pop up on tv!
