Kevin's scatter build thread

Thanks! I shall look into the fabric! Pads are pretty much what I was looking at as well, just worried about MY giant head.
for big heads like ours, I found by turning the helmet sideways worked. Rember most actors are shorter than 6 feet. I have met plenty and I am always amazed because they look much bigger on TV or in the movies. Being 6'3 alot just come up to my chest. It's a weird feeling

I used a glue gun to hold the fabric in place. Just be sure to get the glue on the fabric first. I was nervous about placing hot glue on plastic.

I'm going to fabric the inside of Kylo and this time I will give a tutorial to show my work, if this helps.

Also regarding padding. I did see hobby lobby sells thin foam that looked to easily be made into padding. If you just wrap some fabric around, it looks like it can work.

Ive done this padding method with my clone trooper helmet and it worked quite well. The only problem is it donlesnt have much flex to it like regular insulation foam would.

So no bounce back or snug fits I'm guessing. I'm not using these for trooping so I haven't given that much thought. Makes sense though. I guess it depends on what the helmet will be used for.

Maybe I should have given my about me or mission statement before I started posting my projects. Lol I like to do things back ward's I guess.

Anyways, I have always desired a prop collection and I find myself front and center when ever I run into a prop display no matter what film it's from. It would be a dream to actually be able to work on a set with background props or in a dusty shack putting together hand props for the film. My construction background always kicks in when I'm at places like universal studio's, mgm or disney and studying the gizmos and set ups. Being an electrician by trade, I understand the wiring and control systems but I also understand the structure and what goes into it.

My collecting goals are more guided to props that have grabbed my full attention such as anything stormtrooper, vader, boba fett. Also the 4 main lightsabers and hans blaster.
As you may have noticed, I love to weather my props. It's not a must, however I am going for the closest look from the films as possible. The phrase screen accurate is a hard phrase to live up to because there are many variations of each prop used over and over. I just go with the most common and do the best I can to make it look right. I am also a fan of dull or matte finishes. I used to watch a show (forgot the name ) that had set building and prop making contests and one of the biggest no no's was the shiny finishes. The judges were usually directors or other important film crew people and they would deduct points because they called the finish a filming nightmare because of the glare and reflection. Not that any of my props will ever see a camera, I like the fact that they can.

Anyways, now that I have bored you to tears, maybe some of what you see in the upcoming builds will make more sense. This is a great forum and I am really happy to be able to share with people as crazy as I am. Your builds and ideas are truly inspirational.

Thanks for letting me in and thanks for following my builds.

Back to Kylo's helmet. There are 3 different shades of black on this so far. I'm going for the anovos look. Still some more tuning to do but it's getting closer. I need to go get a rubber place mat or mud flap for the missing wings under the cheeks

I need to go get some rubber material tomorrow for the helmet. Struck out in a couple of stores. Going to try hobby lobby in the morning. I sprayed the brass base coat on Kylo's saber. It needs to fully cure before I spray the black.

Beginning to weather this puppy. Still a long way to go.

So far I have just been pulling the paint (top coat)and then wiping away to give the worn look. Rubbing and small passes with a file has been this stage of my technique. Still need to even it out
This really isn't so bad for 15 dollars. A great place holder until an accurate and affordable run comes along for those who are looking for one.

i like the brass/chopper underneath
thank you, heres a finished paint job, just need to clear it.

I have more photos however it's taking a long time to upload for some reason. I copied the finish from the prop shop. I didn't like the rainbow so much around the emitters so I blended them in to look a little more realistic

kevin, question for you. do you know of any way product to fill styrofoam? i just took a sample piece of styrofoam and used some putty filler and it ate the foam. which i thought. now im curious to find a product to use as a filler that is styrofoam safe

I know a product exists for Styrofoam to harden it as well as fill seems and joints. There are alot of faux pieces made of Styrofoam used as trim pieces around windows and doors on the exterior houses and they put this on it to harden it and paint prep. Unfortunately I don't know what that is.

Yeh there arn't many good products to lut on styrofoam that dont dissolve it or completely disentigrate it so it cant be terribly hard to find[emoji6]

the air plan guys just suggested light spackle like you use for drywall. i just discovered this 4 minutes ago

you truly are a machine! for the price, and that paint job thats a heck of a deal! i really like how you did the copper base. as for the blue i am so scared to try something like that. did you use a air brush for the emitters?

i really need to invest in one. i was actually at michaels the other day, i know you said you have worked with air brushes for years, is this a good entry level one?

i cant believe how expensive the little pumps are... i was wondering if i could use my regular pancake compresses and use a valve to achieve the correct psi
