Kevin's scatter build thread

kevin do you have a better picture of where you exactly cut the barrel? just so i can save it for future use, or if someone else asks this question?

as for the color, and i am no expert what so ever, but i believe ANH dl-44 is gun blue.

Here you go. Pedro also has some nice shots as well. Basically you need to cut off the barrel where it begins to taper.

Excuse the mess but I just wanted to post a photo of my work shop. There are more power tools not shown because I'm not using them now like a table router, table saw, large bench vise and tools of that nature.

Where am I going with this?

Well, I just cut my barrel to adapt for todds barrel and what a huge pain in my backside!
I have a nice set of tap and dies and still needed to go get a large enough one to fit. The tricky part was matching the fine threads on the barrel. They don't have these in my local hardware store so I had to re cut the threads and tap the hole to 1/2 20. I'm not the first to assemble this barrel and I don't have a machine shop so I needed to adapt and pull it off with what I have.
So basically what I'm saying is, unless you have access to a machine shop or have machining experience, todds flash and barrel kit may not be something to go with. I know there are other kits that simply adapt to your existing barrel.

Here are a few shots of the finished product as a dry fit.

It looks off but it's just the way it is sitting without being screwed in place.

Todds kit looks great and by no intention am I knocking it. However I do believe in PSA's and honest opinions. This build will most certainly test your abilities

wow!! i would have never thought you had to cut off that much!
Yep! Fun fun

to be honest i would feel intimidated having to cut the barrel off, cutting the barrel i would be to scared. but tapping it and making sure it was straight, thats another story lol

Yes, it's definitely tricky. I'm curious to see how many actually cut and tapped their own barrel without taking it to a machine shop. These threads are mostly a shop only set up. I couldn't find a tap

Heck, I couldn't evenmatch up the thread to a nut in an entire hardware store.

Working on some of the mods. Just stamped my serial numbers on the barrel, took off some extra metal here and there, added my grooves and changed the site Guage to the correct side. This just pops loose in the back. I think mine was just on the wrong side. Corrected my knurled as well as my trigger. Notice I keep each separate part or assembly in their own bags. Otherwise I could make a mistake putting this back together

Just got my email confirmation saying my scope is on the way!

what size tap was required? you know i needed a large side tap for the back of one of my intake manifolds on my windsor motor. with going boost you need to put check valves in the vac lines, well the fords have a huge vac plug in the back thats only pushed in by hand. i removed the plug and install a threaded plug. the tap has to be 1-1/8th. i called lowes and sure enough they had one i would have never thought they carried it that size

i wonder why he went this route now? his older bull barrels slide over the factory denix barrel and looked great. i would be afraid to tap it without some kind of custom jig. make something out of pine and some 2x4 to hold the upper receiver in place for boring and taping the hole

The tap and die I used was 1/2 inch 20 thread.
Remember, I couldn't find the correct size nut to fit these threads at a hardware store that probably has 1000 different sizes. None fit.
I have a vise that fits on my drill press that held it in place . I have only seen todds kit come this way, so I'm not sure why he changed. Maybe because he now sells the body as well. Marketing tricks I guess, lol. I would have much rather used the old style, believe me! This was a chore.

ooohhhh so the kit doesnt include any paper work explaining what tap you need?! wow, i didnt know he sells the lower receiver now too! im going to have to check his site

Yeah, nothing on assembly instructions at all. I just opened his page and pieced it together by looking at the parts. It's mostly common sense putting it together but a tap size would have come in handy. Besides it really wouldn't matter because you would need to buy it from a machine supply house anyway. It's not your standard threads.

dang...

Question time. This barrel looks long to me. Is it, and if so, how much needs to be cut off?

Also, the mystery disk, how wide is it?

This is a dry fit as well as the beginning of my finishing. I just put it together to see how it's lining up as well as give a visual to ask my questions.

This guy is heavy! Wow. I'm glad I built my E11 out of aluminum. I bet this weighs more than 2 of those.

hard to tell.. i think you can push the scope can come forward a little more...

check this out

hmmm is the flash hider all the way down? or all the way back rather?

as for the disc size, i only know this because i recently found this!

MysteryDisk.jpg

Wow, that disk looks like a series of disks to make one large. Is that original or is that how someone made there's? Thanks for the disk info. I'm working on it right now. Lol

Kind of hard to tell about the length of the barrel from the photos.

I'm as stubborn as they come when I need to figure a way to achieve the task I'm on. I was trying to figure out how to etch my mystery disk without making a big mess or destroying my blaster. So I ended up cutting down a 1" (inch) spade bit.
20161116_194814.jpg
Next I used my bench grinder to shape it.
20161116_195403.jpg
Then I cut the tip off and sharpened it to fit in the hole (more like a marker, doesn't go all the through the blaster )
IMG_2778.JPG
Then placed in my drill press and now we have the mystery disk

Thank you Danny (halliwax ) for the measurements

ha! i love that! very clever man! your a classic macgyver! any idea on the barrel issue yet?

I guess it's ok. If it is long, I wouldn't think it would be more than around a half inch or so. I have been using kpax han solos utra accurate thread as my main reference photos as well as Pedros thread because he goes into detail, where kpax is more of a pure reference thread. Both have been extremely helpful threads to follow for this dl44 anh build.

I think I'm going to just leave it be. If it turns out to be too long, I can always cut it down later. Simply remove the hidder and barrel adapter, cut and put back together.

That black and white photo looks like it came right off of gun smoke lol!

So - reading through this - here are my thoughts.

1) i'm extremely impressed with the work here, especially without the whole shop set-up

2) Most likely *cringe* the disc wasn't etched. There's a ridge from paint and glue build up on the real gun, and it probably had a Michell Thorens pulley disc (like the imperial hats/belts) on there, as thats what was on the merr-sonn prior to the shop switching bottom frames.

3) Todds BB is meant for his base gun only. It's odd they sell it as a separate kit, without any help to tap your own Denix. I do think the real Mauser was built this way, as the "barrel inside a barrel" seems a little counter intuitive, for firearms sake.

4)I'm in a numbering mood tonight, sorry if this is a weird format :lol

5) also, I've seen a Todd kit where the booster didn't fit all the way in the flash hider. it has to be ground a hair smaller in diameter. That could be forcing your FH too far forward too!
