Doctor Who - A Journal of Impossible Things (Novelized Version)

Sorry for the double post, but with new numbers in hand, I adjusted my dust jacket, and I wanted to show you the new proportions:

The only thing I still want to do is make the lens flares less prominent, but that should be fairly simple. I might also be replacing the front image with a higher resolution one (I ponied up and bought a journal). But before I do that...on to a test printing!

You're going to want to crunch the spine title a bit as well, there isn't enough empty space on the sides.

I'm gonna be jumping back on my cover tomorrow too now that we have exact dimensions.

Haven't been able to do anything to it for a few days due to my father in law being in the hospital. Hopefully I will get it finished by Friday.

Well, I literally JUST got this picture, so I thought I'd share it with you:

That's a proof roughly folded to match the book dimensions. And I think I'm in love with it!

I'd like to thank JKolton here on the boards for printing this up so beautifully for me...and for sending me eye candy like that so I can see the cover and enjoy it all printed up even though it's a few states away at the moment.

There might be a few tweaks forthcoming, but as soon as it's all printed up and wrapped on my book, I'll post here with an update!

Damn, that is some sexy dust jacketing right there. Makes me wonder if I should even bother finishing mine lol. I probably will just to finish it and to have a layered .psd file ... but still. That looks wicked awesome, and no, I don't say that very often.

Any chance you could release that PDF early? Were filming on May 9th and that would be a cool background prop sitting on a desk! :love

I'm sure one of the three of us working on these will have more than finalized at least one of our files by then. Fear not...and if none of us are "done" by that point, just shoot me a PM and I'll get you a copy to use on your shoot - even if it's still not perfect.

And Protokev, J and I are still finalizing the colors...and even I don't have a copy of my own cover yet. So, hold your horses, I want this thing to be perfect before I have it, and I REALLY want it to be perfect before anyone else gets to see it in its final form. It's the curse of being a perfectionist...or obsessed, I'm not sure which.

I also wanted to say that I've swapped out the old Journal background image that Risu so generously let me use in favor of one of my own. Little things like the length of the shadows under the flaps kept bothering me. I'm still not sure how it'll look when printed, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'd like to see a copy of your photo. I thought the shadow length on mine was right (I actually took a LOT of shots of it to try to get that part right) but thought the right side of my tie strap was a bit wrong and the photo had a lot of noise. Bad conditions for a photo. I've been meaning to bring the thing to work to get a better one, my boss is a professional photographer.

I'll send you a copy of my journal image tomorrow. (I've got to pull it back off of my camera)

I taped my journal down, and taped the strap taut to try to get everything as even as accurate as possible, but even so, there wasn't enough shadow definition on the top edge of the journal flap...luckily that's a pretty quick thing to fake. But no matter what we do, we'll never get everything exact, and after taking 35 pictures of my journal, I finally ceded that point. haha :lol

I'd love to see how close a professional photographer can get it though!

...We're such nerds. No reasonable person would ever notice the difference, yet here we are debating shadow lengths and strap orientation. I wouldn't want it any other way.

35 is nothing. I ended up taking about 150. :lol

And I attempted to glue mine down, but none of the glue would work on that devil fabric (pleather).

You win! Wow! I don't think I have the stamina to take 150 pictures of ANYTHING. Way to go there.

And I considered glue, but before I did, I used some good old fashioned painters' tape and it worked like a dream. Which is amazing since it rarely sticks to anything properly.

...Having stared at the concept art for so long, I feel like I need a chameleon arch fob watch now for my collection. Is that crazy?

Yea, the last time I took that many pics was when my ex wanted to do a suicide girls shoot. This time was a bit less cool. :lol

I tried scotch tape first and it was completely ineffective.

I actually just recently got a fob watch, but due to some circumstances there won't be any pics for a while. At least none that I can post publicly. I definitely will take a few though, for when I CAN show them.

I completely understand, but I can't wait!

And scratch what I said about not being able to take 150 pictures of anything...certain exceptions have just come to my attention :)

Haha, I love waking up and reading this thread while eating my breakfast (bacon and egg toasted sandwich with coffee for those who care). Every morning it makes me laugh.

It's funny that the shadows, title gradient, colors, and just the little details like that, don't really matter to people in general but because we're nerds, and this is the replica prop forum, it really kinda does matter lol.

That breakfast sounds excellent, I'll have to start including that in my daily schedule. I get my book back today, so with any luck I'll get my cover printed around midnight tonight. (I love 24 hour kinko's.)

Breakfast of champions, my good man. I have it almost everyday. Some days I mix it up and have chocolate chip pancakes (but with bacon and egg on the side of course) because I love those too. I always feel better after my breakfast :D

I'm almost done with my cover, and then I'll go print mine out too.

I'm also working on another paper prop from a movie at the same time as working on this. I'm having to re-create it completely, it's a right pain in the backside but looking decent so far :D

I really need to stop taking on projects right now lol.

I know how you feel. I finally just got back to work on my Tom Baker neckerchief pattern after almost 2 months of inactivity.

Just measured my own book, verifying that Nick's measures are correct. Heading to Kinko's in 3.... 2.... 1....
