Alien / Nostromo Uniforms

You are on the right track. I have heard them called chicago screws and binding post screws. I used aluminium binding post screws (I want to say 1/4"). You can buy them at Lowes or Home Depot for about $1 each, or you can order 100 for about $16 at mybinding.com. Your call. :) I highly recommend using a drop of superglue to hold them in place; they have a tendancy to come loose.

Jacket construction followup images

In reference to the completed jacket (see original post #510) I have included construction images here. They show (not in order) the original base jacket, the interior lettering stitching, a completed rear view, the new (un-insulated) lining, and a view of the arm lacing panels. Descriptions of materials and methods can be found in my previous jacket posting (#807). I should add that the snaps along the collar line were not in the original jacket. They were added so that I could still use the original sewn-in hood (which I made a separate piece.) My apologies for the smeared quality of the original jacket image-in my haste I used the image from the original dealer (which is not the correct shade). I attempted to match the fabric of the collar, lacing panels, knit cuffs, and velcro closures to the original. It's not 100% perfect, but if anyone gets close enough to actually notice, they should be buying me a drink first...

Re: Belt buckle greeblie images

Thank you for the compliments! The PF flyers are an awesome base, even if you don't do the mods. I've been given a source for some smaller D-rings; I may be able to update that in a month or two but I am NOT looking forward to redoing the lacing. I never thought of using a punch; I will have to look into that.

Next project in the works is a Colonial Marine from Aliens. I've been given the green light by the wife, so some parts are already on order. :) I'm doing another sketch book now and I hope to start a thread soon.

Charlie--considering your real nice ALIEN, and Fallout 3 costumes, I look forward to your USCM build! Yall are uber-skilled; I only wear the costumes, I don't know what makes 'em run...

Re: Jacket construction followup images

Excellent work on the jacket. I hadn't realized the NOSTROMO on the back was velcro; that's a very inspired idea. One thing I did with my side laces was say to heck with screen accuracy. No one I know would leave those hanging down, especially when trying to operate flight controls. I laced mine up from the cuff and then tied it off at the shoulder. It hangs down, the lacing can still be tightened, but its out of the way. Your method definitely looks like the movie jackets though. I couldn't tell that wasn't an RAF jacket until I saw the tag in the back.

And Yuri, thanks for the compliments. I hope the Marine is up to snuff. I can't take a lot of the credit for my builds though; I come up with ideas and find talented people to help. :)

Thanks again for the compliments. I had wanted to use an RAF jacket, but they are hideously expensive for my purposes here in Canada. I could have used a Canadian combat jacket (which does have a buttoned storm flap and a pointed collar) but they are more expensive than the tank jacket I actually used. However, they also have the hard-to-find slotted buttons that I believe are on the RAF jacket. The thing that marks the tank jacket as immediately distinctive is the large offset main zipper. It also makes the symmetry of the front lacing very difficult due to the space differences. But I agree on the arm laces being impractical for operating control systems. And I look forward to seeing posts on your upcoming CM outfit.

Fred--you ROCK. I was wondering about the red Weylan-Yutani sundisc thingers on the boxers, and the Medical gown...

Thanks mate !

:cool

Oh BTW, I recently saw one of these (or something very similar) on Ripley's EVA suit helmet, it's located on the lower right side (but barely noticeable because of the heavy lights used in most of that sequence in the Narcissus). I don't think you"ll be able to see it on film though, I personally spotted this little detail on an old production photo...

Belt buckle details

I have created a vector image of the engineering insignia from the Nostromo, in lieu of de-constructing the actual pin itself. I cannot post the file here, since it is in CorelDraw .cdr format. It is as close as I can make it from the original bitmap image. It should be easy to convert to another vector format.

Nostromo medical gown?

Does anyone know any details about the gowns (or robes) that the Nostromo crew wore just after they woke up from hypersleep? There is a shot of Brett wearing one at breakfast. I believe Kane also wore one when he awoke in the infirmary. It looks like nothing more than a very long housecoat-type white garment with the standard light-pink trim (and apparently a red WY stamp). Any images on this aside from screencaps?

Coffee cups

I would also love to acquire one of the white coffee cups with the blue WY wings...but these were probably some unknown vintage 70's tupperware thing with the logo added later. Has anyone worked on this?

YES--I have a few--search ebay for Stackable Tupperware mug. Thanks to Skinjob 66's generosity, I had decals to "dress up" the mugs, which again I purchased from ebay. DON'T search for "white" tupperware mug--you'll find LOTS in the wrong color, but probably a "lot" of mugs with at least one or two in the correct to movie, white color.

Apparently they ALL have pink "crew" piping, and are white, gots a few screen-captures...I THINK they produced them exclusively for the film production, but I bet Skinjob 66 knows the full story ;-)

I have images files for the decals, if anyone needs them. Still haven't been able to get a mug yet though; admittedly, it's not on my priority list.

Also, in regards to the gowns, I believe there are several good pictures (behind the scenes type) on the ALIEN Blu-ray.

Alas no Randall, I don't have any info on these... but for close-ups you could maybe try to do some screencaps of Ripley at the end of the film I do believe she's wearing the same robe in her cryotube...

Again tlr, you need to pay a visit to the A L I E N sub-section on propsummit ! (As YuriG said, I've worked on these and many other little Nostromo props, it's just that I don't have the heart to re-load everything on the RPF)

:)

Of cups and robes and other things

Thank you SSGT Kitten, YuriGagarin61, and Skinjob 66 for the info. I will do some searching when I get a spare moment, and I will also try to generate a close (hopefully) pattern for the robe when I get a chance. I also checked out propsummit, and there seems to be another treasure trove of data there too. It bears investigating. Thanks again for the assistance. I might have to prowl through the quadrilogy special features yet again on half-speed and do some snooping.

tlr--you are welcome! Don't fret, if you don't find White tupperware stackable 1970s mugs immediately. I suggest that you do a "saved" ebay search, and check back there often. You are bound to "luck out". Goodness knows it took me have a year to amass my collection!
Fred--aw shucks, re: the dressing gowns. tlr, et al I've watched the scenes with the gowns repeatedly (like most of ALIEN, lol...) they only appear in the opening, and aboard the Narcissus. Best places to view/make screen capture stills. I did NOT see any good stills, or mentions of, the dressing gowns in either ALIEN Vault nor the older "The Book of ALIEN", the latter book did however have an interesting disection of a deleted scene between Ripley and Dallas....:rolleyes

Now that I'm thinking about it...

The gown Ripley wears in the opening scenes of, hmm... Aliens (meh) looks very close to what she wears at the end of A L I E N, and it (the Aliens one) was auctioned iirc in the last Profiles in History auction. (don't have time to do a search in their past catalogs right now but they're still downloadable on their site and there's always interesting data attached to each of the items they sell, it could help get info on the fabric used)

Somewhere I have close ups of the medical gown including the markings. I will try to find them and upload them.

Bwaha! THANK you Fred--I'll look for it when I have time. LOL, yeah meh--still better than "Cubed", the next one...

Dug through my files and put these together for you.
They look to just be a light cotton.
