Alien / Nostromo Uniforms

The ribbon is from China, via an Ebay seller - search for 'grosgrain polyester ribbon' and you should find the supplier easily. You might find a colour that you prefer - they sell hundreds of different shades.

As mentioned previously, the nylon came from a rucksack (actually two rucksacks). The bags were branded 'Head', but that may not be much use as that type may have been particular to the UK, if not the particular shop I found them in. I'd suggest checking outdoor goods shops for something similar - the correct texture is easy to find, so it's just a matter of finding it in a useful colour too.

Edit: I just remembered I took a pic:

I've got a couple of head bags... however they are too good to rip apart lol.
Thanks for the answers and yes, check out TheMechanic's patches!

I'm sure he wasn't too, I just find smileys can be a bit misplaced sometimes...

By the way, I really was genuinely impressed by Intergalactic's patches - for a mass-market, cheap(ish) option they look darn good. Just a shame their WY eagles are so wrong - all angular and seemingly based on nothing in particular.

I shall be getting some of their pins for my shirt though!

Jonno--the jacket looks great. Well done sir! I "won" on ebay an o.d. mk. III, but I'm happy with it. Maybe I'll find a gray someday...I'll post my pics as soon as I finish converting it to Nostromo specs...

Haven't seen TheMechanic's then, eh?

Larry, did TheMechanic make W-Y wings? Because if so, I have GOT to find me some!

Jonno - gorgeous coat, couldn't have asked for a more accurate replica! I am a bit envious of your fancy W-Y wings, and more envious of your scrach-made laces!

As for me, I have slowly been accumulating Nostromo-coat-related bits and bobs, but I am looking to do somewhat of a hybrid/non-canon coat for myself. Specifically, I'm inspired by the military cut of the Kane and Dallas jackets, but I was thinking about replacing the sleeve laces with the ribbed/quilted bit from Brett's coat.

Can any of your sewing experts out there tell me how I might begin to fabricate quilted strips for the sleeves like this?

Easily achieved using a separate panel, take a strip of backing material about 6" wide, add a strip of padding on top the same length and width, glue in place if you want? finally cover with a strip of nylon, leatherette or other shiny material, run down the length on a sewing machine to seal the edges, then create the distinctive quilting by running the machine horizontally across to the desired width! then add the strip to the jacket and stitch in place. if you don't have access to a sewing machine a local shop dealing in alterations should have no problem making this!

The mechanic didn't make any screen accurate wings to my knowledge? but Merliner/Montana did make a limited run of screen accurate Dallas and Kane officers wings in gold and silver bullion! he only made about 8 of each due to the expense and time involved, I'm not sure if he would have any left?

I would happily go with Merliner's OR The Mechanic's replicas, if I had the choice...but I haven't seen any recent offerings in The Junkyard, or elsewhere, from either individual :confused @ Larry Young--interesting profile pic, but why "Adolf" glad-handing the HJ lol??? Sorry, just curious as a History buff...

Makes sense to me. Simpler than I thought, too. Thanks! :)

I just PM'd Merliner (actually via his Propsummit identity, but this board should work too!) Indeed he doesn't seem to have offered his patches recently, but his posts on the subject indicated that they were fairly 'open' runs so he had plenty left (and probably still does).

Heck, you might as well PM TheMechanic while you're at it - maybe you can coax HIM into making another bunch!

Jonno~thank you!!! I will try pm'ing The Mechanic, as well as Merliner. Could you pm me his PropSummit i.d., as I've been on ther for almost 4 years. (I'm BR26354 on PropSummit...).

Here is my crew shirt, the picture is before i put the wings and shoulder patch on. I am pretty happy with how it came out. Still working on the pants.

AWESOME screen shots!
I would LOVE to get my hands on one of those jackets.
I had no idea there was that much to them from watching the movie.

Very nice work! How did you switch out the buttons for snaps?

Charlie

Thanks, I took the button side of the sacrificial shirt and carefully ripped it off, then I cut off the button whole side of the final shirt leaving about .5" of material to sew it to and then stitched it in at the collar and down the whole side. Ended up working ok but it wasn't quite as clean or as straight as I would have liked.

I can tell you that my sewing got significantly better by the time i was done with this shirt. You should have seen the first few versions of the pocket flaps with piping, they were pretty bad.
