Alien / Nostromo Uniforms

Hopefully, in the next day or so Funky Jedi should be receiving these:

I may be expanding my offerings of jacket lacings with custom made Nostromo pants as well. Stay tuned.

They look Outstanding, Sir. :)

I wonder if those pants were made by the same person who designed the Escape From New York Snake Plissken pants. They look similar.

Thanks, Yuri. I have updated my patterns and will be tackling an Ash version of the costume next for a friend. I was a little rushed in sewing the costumes for SDCC, so I did not have time to make prototypes and there are a few things that needed adjusting.

If you mean who created the replica Nostromo pants above? the answer is Randy in San Diego...also known as SG-RB, check page 10 post #242. of this thread! don't think he's ever made any replica Plissken pants?

Or if your talking about the actual movie Pants, Snake Plisskens trousers and all other costumes in Escape from New York were designed by Stephen Loomis, and the costumes on Alien were designed by John Mollo.

You are most welcome, Sir...do you do requests, as I'd LOVE to purchase a set of "Brett" style Nostromo trousers? PM me if you prefer. Again, GREAT replicas!!!

Your memory serves you correctly Jonesy sir! Tiny was the wardrobe supervisor on Alien. and has worked with John Mollo on numerous other films, including Outland and Empire.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. So much great info in this thread. Thanks to all concerned.

Question: most of the people here seem to have gotten hold of green MK3 jackets to use as the basis of their Nostromo project. I, on the other hand, have picked up a grey one. Any recommendations for dyes to use to bring it closer to the colour seen in the movie? (All the dyes suggested seemed to assume you're starting with green fabric.)

Many thanks.

SilverDragon......hello and welcome, Jonesy is indeed correct! the screen used jackets were vintage RAF grey/blue mark 3's. pre 1969. some also refer to this colour as "Purple Taupe". it has a irridescent quality where it changes in different lighting conditions! hence the confusion for many years that these jackets were brown, dark green or dark blue!
You are very lucky to have acquired one of these RAF jackets, as they are as rare as hens teeth! most were destroyed my the MOD as obsolete stock, and not passed on to surplus stores for sale to the public! I was lucky to locate a vintage grey/blue MK3 last year.
These original jackets carry the RAF stock reference number 22c/2574 on the inside left only, where as the newer jackets have the Nato 13 digit stock/stores number, generally starting with 8415-99. they also have the distinct black front toggles, and unpadded pen pouch.

There are three different versions of the green jacket in circulation, the current darker olive green, a grey/green and a sage green. produced by three seperate Mod defence contractors, RFD BEAUFORT, COSALT BALLYCLARE AND LIFEGUARD SYSTEMS.

One of the main reason the RAF ceased using it's grey/blue flight gear was to fall inline with its Nato allies! A interoperability agreement, partly drawn up as part of a government White paper on defence from the 1960's onward! it's aim to save money in the cash strapped post war years, It meant adopting more standardised equipment that could be easily exchanged between nato allies, and preventing confusion in a conflict.

kane2122, yeah I had guessed that that was the reason silverdragon's was "grey". However Thank You for the information on the Nostromo jackets' coloration quandary; and the extremely interesting (to this militaria/history buff) information on the M.O.D. changing Cold War standards. Thank you, Sir ;-)

Thanks for the info.

I just about scraped a recent eBay auction win for it. I had entered a top bid of 103 quid (semi-random boost to the 100 mark), and somebody esniped for 101 quid. Close shave.

Green one went earlier in the day for fifty quid. Grey one apparently more desirable! It was a size 6, as well, to the green's size 5, and I read on these boards about how one ought to go slightly larger than the sizing chart might suggest, so I'm happier to get the grey 6.

I'm actually expecting the shirt to be the hardest thing to get right. I've seen the Magnoli shirt and the design looks good, but something about it just doesn't quite look right to me. In the movie the shirts look heavier and softer, with an off-white tinge. More American Eagle than Brooks Brothers, if you take my meaning.

I was pondering some subtle dying of a Magnoli, followed by some intentional rumpling.

What are people's opinions on what the actual colouring of the shirts (bridge crew) is in the movie? Different moments make them seem by turns slightly grey and then somewhat cream or beige.

Only to us Alien aficionados ;)

Glad it went to someone who's using it for the right reasons, and on reflection the 6 might have been a little on the large side for me anyway!

I see you're in the UK too - let me know if you're interested to hear my research so far on materials for homemade lacing, it's been pretty tricky to get a good match...

SilverDragon..... check the last post over in the 'Nostromo crew shirt by magnoli" section, the photos might help you out?......i'm not particularly enamoured with the indy shirt myself, the collars to stiff and the wrong style! other things dont sit right either.

The costume dept used sandpaper to rough the surface of the screen used shirts.

Well, like Connor MacLeod, I'm from "lots of different places", and currently live in Canada, but maintain an address in the UK.

I'm certainly interested in the lace sections pre-made by Randy in San Diego. Not cheap at $90, but when I think about it the saved time is almost certainly worth it. (That's the economist in me recognizing that cost should be thought of primarily in terms of the value of your own labour hours.)

I'd still be interested to hear your thoughts on home-made lacing, though.

SD

I would be able to make cheaper lacing if somebody would help me source the correct material. If I have to do it I don't want to use "just any" material. My friend sent me a piece of the original lacing, I only need the right stuff to get copies of it

About Magnoli shirt, I would just wait for somebody else to offer them. I just don't like them and I agree with what kane2122 said even concerning the Indy shirts.

Whoever got the jacket, sorry for any evil-eye that might fall on you. I partecipated to that bidding and didn't even have time to put a higher bid. Some darn good sniping there, hats off.
