A New Star Wars Trilogy Announced

I know people want to leave the Skywalker saga behind, but what do we replace it with? KK and JJ tried with Rey but that was a disaster. I really despise those movies…more so than the prequels which were almost as bad.

Is Faverau the right head to replace KK? For a long term vision? Filoni? I don’t know.

There have been some good things that have come out over the years. I enjoyed/love ENDOR a lot. Love the Mandalorian. And I liked Rogue One. And while ASHOKA wasn’t perfect I enjoyed it.

I really think SW went sour with RTOJ. Even as a little kid I knew ROTJ was really really flawed. My Uncle who is a staunch SW fan even admits that ROTJ wasn’t very good now and he initially loved it.

I’m not bullish or dismissive of SW. ANH AND EMPIRE IMO belong in the pantheon of great movies. But right now I just feel meh about the whole thing.

I hear most people listing the same items as new but good and old but good. Out of all of the directors/story guides we have at Disney, only Faverau names those same items.

Filoni has wandered far far from canon and seems to do so to please his spouse. I certainly want no further input from her nor through him. Filoni was a massive fanboy but seems to really be embracing the canon fire that is burning up the old scripts.

I still have plenty of faith in Faverau but how can you separate him from the others?

JJ needs to stop... yep, just stop altogether. I could never forget his live dismissal of the entire saga in interviews but he has done the same overt dismissal of Trek and others. How do you keep getting hired? Successes were based on the use of canon and existing franchises which are now smoldering from his touch.

All I can do is go back to the day Mando came out and my hope for being immersed in the real to me SW universe was rekindled.

Stop for even a moment and just feel what it was like staring at the screen as the end credits kicked in on The Mandalorian, episode 1. You know the whole world just paused, floating for a second in awe.

More of that.

Shatner couldn't have said it better...lol

Imagine Shatner doing an impression of Mr. Spock.

Then imagine Morgan Freeman doing an impression of Shat doing Spock.

Then imagine David Hasselhoff doing an impression of Morgan Freeman doing that.

The universe would explode.

You do what they're doing with Mangold's movie, just way out in a different direction. Do Revan, jump forward a couple hundred years and start from scratch. There's plenty of room out there. It's a GALAXY far far away. Plenty of things going on in a galaxy. Especially if you move the timeframe.

I don’t think timeframe or any plot device is the problem. It’s finding the RIGHT creative…RIGHT leader to create the new narrative that most people…not just SW fans, but most people will love and respect. Is it even possible? Is that person Faverau? Somebody else? Really not sure anymore. Plenty of things going on the galaxy, but what is it? What’s interesting?

I only got as far as the raised eyebrow sequenced through all 4 and I nearly died. You probably shouldn't go around handing out tiktok challenges that can rupture space-time.

So Kathleen Kennedy is doubling down:

And yes, it is definitely her, as mentioned specifically in the article. It admits that the trilogy came as a surprise to Disney and LFL! "Deep development", they say!

Nope, this is KK attempting to disrupt Favreau.

Seems typically by not doing that they lock themselves into the rebel/empire/skywalker stuff and can't escape. Jump out to remove all the temptations and tethers. Force them to think of something else.

Clearly, you can do it within the same time frame. Survivor is a great story, even though empire stuff is in it, as is KOTOR. So was Mando S1, Andor, etc. The difference seemingly was a lower bar being TV or games. No box office number to have to hit, etc.

Obviously, another clear thing is don't piss off or alienate your fans which the ST seemed to revel in doing.

I mention Mangold in the fact they're going back TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND YEARS. Whether that stays standalone, or becomes a series, it's 25k bleeping years between that and the OT. Plenty of stuff happened in there. It's the literal definition of more things that you could ever possibly dream up. Yet, what do they want to do? 10-12. They say all over the place fresh start, yadda, yadda, yadda, yet connect themselves to the main saga movies. It's nonsensical and they can't seem to help themselves. No better way to help themselves than to get the hell out of the established timeline and force them to do something new.

I think I may have misread what this second article is trying to say and where it comes from.

It does now appear that the Variety article is very gently implying that the previous announcement was not for something in production. They can't come out and literally say that KK went rogue, so they say that it's not ready for the public to know yet; the article does say that.

The fact that this second article appeared immediately after the first suggests that it is intended to be viewed as a "response". And the fact that this article comes from Variety and not The Hollywood Reporter might seem to confirm that as well.

If the infighting and internal bs implied there is true, then the place is a trainwreck and Disney has to step in to reset the order. You can't have that level of stuff going on at that company. You just can't. Especially when it's the person in charge.

For whatever reason, I think Bob Iger doesn't have the power to force KK to step down. He seems to be refusing to fund any more of her big projects. He's trying to wait her out until she retires voluntarily. Right now she's trying to gum up the works because Jon Favreau is being moved into her job right in front of her.

That's my read on it.

I can't think of any major new project that KK has gotten greenlit in the last several years. The more recent stuff (like Indy#5 and the Acolyte) were all in development for a long time.

KK keeps trying to do more Rey movies but none of it is coming together. I think it would have happened if Bob Iger wanted it to. Since when does KK care so much about solid finished scripts before diving into shooting? She has a full-blown habit of reshooting everything. But now her latest Rey movie is supposedly stillborn because of script issues. That story doesn't smell right IMO. I'm guessing Bob Iger thinks the project is poop and he won't give her the budget she wants.

Just my speculation.
