Yeah, Im not holding my breath until we actually have the film in theaters. Isnt Lucasfilm already stuck with the Rey film anyway? Lucasfilm has failed to deliver so many times that "announcements" should honestly just be ignored.
The Favreau faction is more in control of LFL, aren't they? If this is indeed a fake story then they should release a public denial and leave the leaker hung out in the wind. LFL needs all the press credibility it can preserve. It's not doing them any favors to keep announcing & abandoning projects.
Fair point, but a couple thoughts here.
First, they didn't announce the trilogy. The only things LFL has announced are The Mandalorian & Grogu, Skeleton Crew, and Andor Season 2. The rest is all noise coming from third parties.
Second, LFL can't debunk every false rumor, because if something leaks that's real, not denying it would be a confirmation. It's safer to say nothing.
Third, there seem to be some nasty internal politics going on between Favreau, Iger, and Kennedy. I believe they're trying not to drag those politics out into the public, and a public denial of the trilogy story might do that. For example, if Kennedy is the source of the trilogy story, then LFL contradicting her would reveal to these trades that some internal conflict is going on, turning THAT into the story. That's worse for Disney than staying quiet.
Good point about stoking the fires of controversy in a larger way.
But if I was Favreau I'm not sure I would give a crap anymore. If KK leaked the rumor then she's the one stirring up trouble. Favreau must be pretty sick of KK goofing up his work on SW. And Iger needs Favreau more than Favreau needs another SW job.
Totally agree. I believe it's because he really loves Star Wars, and wants to bring to life all the things we've wanted. But I do think he's nearing the end of his patience. And I think that is Kennedy's endgame.

I dunno what's gonna happen, but while I want to see some new movies with the ST cast (good movies that give them actual good content through which they can showcase their true talent), I also want Star Wars to move beyond the Skywalkers and the Rebels/Empire conflict (and I include Eps. VII-IX in that, because the First/Final/Whatever Order is just the Empire with a shiny new iPhone case slapped on it).
It's a meme at this point.
When I hear "Disney is planning a new SW trilogy" it lights up the same part of my brain as "Arnie is starring in another Terminator reboot." I just groan. They need to stop assuming that the public even wants 3 more SW movies.
We have seen SW movies "bomb" in the sense that Disney spent 2 bazillion dollars and it only earned back 1.6 bazillion. But I think the next SW theatrical movie may be a true bomb. Like, the opening weekend sells $16m. It might happen even if the movie is really good. The public enthusiasm & trust in the franchise is just gone.
They will probably have to earn it back by making some decent SW movies that lose money and only get discovered on streaming. But I don't think Bob Iger has the brains & stones to do that. He would need the discipline to put up with 1 (or even several) movies bombing in theaters, but not change the formula because those bombs are getting high ratings from streaming viewers.

Part of me feels like telling a completely different story in the Star Wars universe could be really interesting, but another part of me feels like it's quite dangerous and uncharted territory since we've never broken out of the Skywalker Saga to that extent. Most of the media that is produced is still connected to the Skywalker Saga and the Galactic Civil War in some way, whether that be the prequels, sequels, spin offs, or Disney+ shows. And to echo what others have said, it seems like a trend we're having with film projects being announced and then either being cancelled entirely, or diminished into streaming shows, like the Boba Fett movie becoming the Book of Boba Fett and the planned Obi-Wan movie (possible trilogy?) becoming Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Is there a mega list of all the announced films/projects and directors who have been signed on and later let go? I remember it all started with the GOT guys doing a trilogy and then that turned into vapor.
There are only so many directors, at this point who is left be announced to work on SW project?

Sadly this 100%. I dont think people in general feel the way they do about Star Wars the way they do about Terminator but for me, its close.
A new Terminator project just sounds like a waste of time and gets no interest from me. That franchise has been destroyed beyond recognition and I dont acknowledge that it went beyond two movies (to be fair, I didnt hate Salvation and I did enjoy the tv show with Headey). However, the franchise has completely destroyed itself and jumped the shark too many times that its a dead franchise imo.
I dont get excited for a new Star Wars project and the constant rumors and announcements that go undelivered dont help matters.

Maybe in ten years AI technology will have matured enough that fans themselves will be able to make a good rendition of the Star Wars trilogy that people actually want to see: the Thrawn Trilogy ... without any influence from the sequel-movie timeline.

Ah man, I was so disappointed you missed like 3 periods. But I did love that it forced me to read the entire thing as a stammering robot. Nicely played.
