The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

I think the easiest mod would be adding a jewelrama disk and changing the lights to the RGB setting. Changing the door handle pulls has already occurred to me since the bent pulls aren't the original configuration of that prop.

And for the record I've modified both Wand phasers and communicators, so my tricorder ideas aren't idle threats! :p

Much like the phaser and communicator (at the original price) the Wand Co. tricorder is cheaper than a static, unbuilt garage kit of that particular prop. I know a lot of people freak out when they see modified Wand Co. replicas considering the crazy secondary market prices but they were cheap and easy to get and upgrade at one time.

I'm expecting an update any day based on this most recent posting to the Tricorder blog:

"Currently the start of production is set for December 28, 2024 (although that of course could change) and both Andrew and James (last seen in action at San Diego Comic-Con) are gearing up to go out to China just after Christmas to handhold the start of the manufacturing process. They will be there to make sure the tricorders are just how we want them to be as they start rolling off the production line."

This was just posted on Tricorder blog from Chris Barnado at Wand:

"As seems to be the tale with this never-ending project, we had a last-minute ESD test fail. During the ESD testing, the Tricorder is shocked with thousands of volts to see if any of it leaks anywhere or stops the Tricorder from working. We had passed this test in our own lab testing but something in the way that the test was done at the factory test house just pushed it into a fail. This required a slight rework… which is very, very annoying at this late stage but, thankfully only a minor change was needed in order for it to pass. However, this has once again pushed back the start of production very slightly and now that has crashed into Chinese New Year. All the long-lead-time parts have been ordered, so from one point of view, I guess you could say that we have started production… if you count making the PCBs production, that is. But full-scale production/assembly and testing now will not start until the first week of Feb."

Why does this need to be tested with "thousands" of volts? That's ridiculous for basically a high-end toy. I have pro-level electronics for all kinds of diagnostics and none of them purport to be that failsafe. Smells like another delaying tactic to me.

ESD testing is common. But were the phasers and comms subjected to it as well? This does have a sensor on it,
May require the testing that it won’t fry from static discharge. Usually a cap to ground somewhere protects componants.

The FOMO continues to blaze with the power of 10,000 suns, in this thread. ;)

Patience. The Tricorder will be released when it’s ready, or never.

Yeah, I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that it’s the Chinese tariffs. Maybe Wand will manufacture somewhere else.
We’re not buying these from China, we’re buying them from the UK. Who The Wand Co. chooses as a supplier isn’t affected by a tariff imposed by the U.S. on China. Our trade with the UK is balanced, in fact they buy more from us than we buy from them. Economists here and in the UK believe there won’t be an impact by a U.S. tariff.

It’s too late for Wand to switch suppliers at this stage. Production in China has all but started with all the tooling, testing and prototypes manufactured. Just not “FULL” production which is on hold because of the month long Chinese New Year shutdown.

For all of the whiners and the “More delay tactics”, I ask, what delay tactics? Point to ONE SINGLE ‘delay tactic’!

They’ve been up front every step of the way.

Your impatience doesn’t equal their ‘delaying’ it.

Think about it… how do THEY benefit by not putting the product out?

They're delaying the purchase of in-stock products. These are 4D chess tactics!

If people would spend half as much time LEARNING on the internet as they do arguing on it, they might learn a thing or two.

Here’s a free one for you guys.
