The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Well, it finally found my package, but unfortunately it didn't tell me anything new:

How to rationalize a TWC $1000 Tricorder?

Given it’s purported superiority to the Master Replicas Tricorder….which are +/- $1000 on Fleabay

The TWC Tricorder should hold values exceeding the MRT…..in essence should one ever sell a TWC in the future…theoretically you’ll make some profit above the “possibly soon to be”, TWC tariff ridden Tricorder costs…

Anyone feel quasi better?

I do….

This is THE COOLEST THING EVER! So worth the wait.

Sadly I’m getting home at 9:30 and can’t play with it too much tonight.

I’ve changed my mind on the illuminated moire, it’s amazing!

It’s going to take hours to go through everything.

I want to thank Chris Barnardo from The Wand Company for giving this to me as a gift!

Its from the first 250!

Your bonus is….you escaped the pending tariffs!

Enjoy

I’m glad to see these showing up in the U.S. I just hope mine breaks out of this status sometime today. I’ve seen international tracking before. No change forever then BAM… it’s out for delivery. I hope that’s the case here.

If not, I wonder how one gets contacted for additional fees by customs? I don’t think they have any info but my address.

I think our tricorders are literally in the same boat. Powered by the same gerbils on the same treadmill.

As for contact, Amazon would have your email address. But honestly I have no idea how it would work.

I really hate to do this, because 1) there's a fair chance I'm completely wrong (again), and 2) it's not at all good news. But those of us who have tricorders still in transit at this late date need to consider it, and we'll find out for sure within a few days in any case. Besides, I've already posted this breakdown elsewhere, so it would be kind of dumb not to post it here too. So here goes:

I've done some more tariff research, and I think I've finally wrapped my head around how it all works--there are lots of moving parts.

As you probably know, the de minimis exemption for goods valued at less than $800 goes away Friday morning, May 2, at 12:01 AM. At that point, China-origin goods entering the US will be subject to some pretty stiff tariffs. If they're entering via the international postal system, it looks like the tariff is 145% or $100, whichever is greater. That's bad enough.

I'll just use my own package as an example, which is being shipped by Maersk, which as far as I know is not a postal carrier. Items coming in outside the international postal system will get socked with full duties, which for the tricorder come to 170%.

Here's how it breaks down:
  • The Harmonized Tariff Schedule code for the tricorder, according to Wand, is 8519.89.20.00.
  • The first thing we do is check the HTS for the general duty for this code number, which fortunately is 0.
  • Next is the Section 301 tariff, which was implemented in 2018. It’s been modified over time, but as far as I can tell, it remains at 25%.
  • Then there’s the reciprocal tariff, which was increased to 125% earlier this month.
  • Finally, there’s the 20% opioid-related tariff.
Tariffs, unfortunately, stack--meaning they're additive.

So, stacking the above tariffs, we get: 0% + 25% + 125% + 20% = 170%.

To calculate the tariff on the tricorder, then, we have to multiply the customs value by 170%. With the exchange rate that I got when I ordered, my tricorder came to $359.

Shipping and handling and local sales tax are not included in the customs value, so we calculate the tariff based on the $359.

359 x 170% = $610.30.

$359 + $610.30 = $969.30 Total Price.

Yikes. And Ouch. But it is what it is.

Right now, I'm really hoping my tricorder enters the country no later than 11:59PM tomorrow! I set aside money for the tariffs, but I'd much, much rather not part with it.

As I said, though, I could be completely wrong (again). I really hope I'm wrong on the high side. Boy, do I hope I'm wrong. In the event I'm right, though, I prefer to focus on the fact that this is by far the greatest TOS prop replica ever produced, and I'm going to be thrilled with it.

This settles things for me, even if I get the email in the next few days I'm not ordering until the tariff issues are resolved and we know how much we will get screwed by. If I have to wait a few months or 4 years I will not be ordering now.

I'm very happy for those that were able to capitalize on TWC's mistake last week and hope you don't get screwed like it appears the rest of us will.

Here is a quick video of some of the features of it.

Again, I want to thank Chris Barnardo for giving me this wonderful device.

As an editor, he and I have been working on a book that he spent quite a bit of time working on. We spent a good three months on the project and he gifted it as an expression of appreciation for the work we’ve done together on it

I’m not sure when it is set to be released, but I highly recommend you read it. I can describe it as Isaac Asimov, Philip, K Dick, Ray, Bradbury, and Cixin Liu all got together to create an epic adventure of humans and artificial humans living together while a war is brewing.

It is called, The Art of Being; An Unconventional War.

It is an amazing read, which I know everyone here will enjoy.

Good news - I was wrong on the high side after all.

Someone with 28 years' experience in international shipping posted on another board that customs value is based on production cost typically, not retail value as I assumed above (it's based on whatever is declared to customs, which apparently is typically production cost). So not only will we get a lower tariff for tricorders arriving after 12:01 AM May 2 than I calculated above, but we'll have a window into Wand's production cost!

EDIT--And ya know, if they just base it on production cost per unit without development cost included, the tariff could wind up being pretty low... a guy can hope, anyway...

Considering Chinese labor and wages and production costs are typically Pennies on the dollar…if you go by the Chinese products sold through Alibaba…

I’m not sweating the tariffs….
