I really hate to do this, because 1) there's a fair chance I'm completely wrong (again), and 2) it's not
at all good news. But those of us who have tricorders still in transit at this late date need to consider it, and we'll find out for sure within a few days in any case. Besides, I've already posted this breakdown elsewhere, so it would be kind of dumb not to post it here too. So here goes:
I've done some more tariff research, and I think I've finally wrapped my head around how it all works--there are lots of moving parts.
As you probably know, the
de minimis exemption for goods valued at less than $800 goes away Friday morning, May 2, at 12:01 AM. At that point, China-origin goods entering the US will be subject to some pretty stiff tariffs. If they're entering via the international postal system, it looks like the tariff is 145% or $100, whichever is greater. That's bad enough.
I'll just use my own package as an example, which is being shipped by Maersk, which as far as I know is
not a postal carrier. Items coming in outside the international postal system will get socked with full duties, which for the tricorder come to 170%.
Here's how it breaks down:
- The Harmonized Tariff Schedule code for the tricorder, according to Wand, is 8519.89.20.00.
- The first thing we do is check the HTS for the general duty for this code number, which fortunately is 0.
- Next is the Section 301 tariff, which was implemented in 2018. It’s been modified over time, but as far as I can tell, it remains at 25%.
- Then there’s the reciprocal tariff, which was increased to 125% earlier this month.
- Finally, there’s the 20% opioid-related tariff.
Tariffs, unfortunately,
stack--meaning they're additive.
So, stacking the above tariffs, we get:
0% + 25% + 125% + 20% = 170%.
To calculate the tariff on the tricorder, then, we have to multiply the customs value by
170%. With the exchange rate that I got when I ordered, my tricorder came to
$359.
Shipping and handling and local sales tax are not included in the customs value, so we calculate the tariff based on the $359.
359 x 170% = $610.30.
$359 + $610.30 = $969.30 Total Price.

Yikes. And
Ouch. But it is what it is.
Right now, I'm
really hoping my tricorder enters the country no later than 11:59PM tomorrow! I set aside money for the tariffs, but I'd much,
much rather not part with it.
As I said, though, I could be completely wrong (again). I
really hope I'm wrong on the high side.
Boy, do I hope I'm wrong. In the event I'm right, though, I prefer to focus on the fact that this is
by far the greatest TOS prop replica ever produced, and I'm going to be
thrilled with it.
