I would bet that, it looks too unweathered and uniformI was zooming in on the photo and it got me wondering if that back wall was not real and was CGI displayed on that giant StageCraft/The Volume background system. Perhaps those lights are only 3D models.
At first glance, I notice how small the opening is. This is unusual for a light. I was going to say it looked like those old ship deck lights that are completely sealed weatherproof lights but why the small opening? And then I remembered my lantern. Battery pack at the bottom and LED ring at the top, which gives a reason for the closed and larger bottom section, for the batteries.
both would explain the funky little opening versus a standard clear bell. I have one of those bug things too. same gap at the top. Mine takes citronella scent cartridges and just blows the scent out the gap at the top.Looks a bit more like a modified bespoke tabletop bug zapper to me, or maybe a dyson-esque fan.
ummmm freaking AWESOME!!! That is a legit perfect day.Captain Brutus @ Monsterpalooza 2025 (with a couple build tips/leads)

Costume got its first official outing this past weekend. I had doubts many would recognize the character…Monsterpalooza is primarily a horror convention, but there’s enough popular media crossover that it was worth a try…and guiyse, GUIYSE…I was not prepared…
He did get called “werewolf” occasionally…which is fine, fantastic even, I love werewolves, that’s why he caught my eye in the first place…but a surprising number of folks called him by his full and proper “Pirate Captain Brutus” name, or at least recognized him from Skeleton Crew. There’s also quite a few industry people at this show, and I was floored when they’d ask for a photo and tell me they worked on Brutus’ eyes, or a pic to send to a friend who cast his blasters, or an atta-boy from the fellow who designed and fabricated his belt buckle…
(Excellent photo refs and materials breakdown here!)
This Fifth Element cosplay group though…not all shown here, they had the whole crew…top-notch costumes and props, but also magnificently in character. The Mangalore seen on the left here…

…leans in to tell me “I made Brutus’ belts” and filled me in on some details. It’s a horse halter square on the right hip holster…Tandy Leather was mentioned, but I’ve not located it there or one like it, but at least know where to start the search. A neat detail that we’ll never see, he explained they laser-engraved “I've been looking forward to this for a long time” (a la Greedo) in Aurebesh on it. I think you can almost see a hint of that in the second-from-left pic here (around the perimeter, I think):

Also got confirmation that the chest protector/shoulder pad thing was fabricated, not built over existing football or motorcycle gear, so that was informative. Think I just need to make it about 10% bigger (pretty much everything is 5–10% too small right now, but it’s a starting point).
Did my awkward best to let each of them know that everyone’s passion really shone through in the show, and one of them confirmed that yeah, they really did look forward to days they got to work on the project.
Apropos of nothing, goofing around recreating internet memes with werewolves around the con:
