It's not fansets as it has the correct groove on the face which the fansets doesn't.Which combadge is that? Just looks thicker than the Fansets to me. Thanks.
I have a yellow one. It arrived today but I am not home yet to see it.Did someone also receive a yellow one already? Or aren't they produced, yet? I'm thinking about buying a second one in yellow... What about the issues with dye and affix the color?
There’s a guy in the Star Trek Costume Group on Facebook that received his gold one from ELS 2 days ago and posted comparisons of it and 2 others he bought from other companies and he did side by side photos and descriptions.Did someone also receive a yellow one already? Can’t wait to see.I have just worn my yellow one for the first time and quite simply it's the best jacket I have ever seen. I couldn't stop smiling. The fit, finish and quality are second to none. I'll post some photos later.
Its a Kenny Ambrose, but it's also really close to the pin ones on ebay. The groove is a need. I'm definitely going to get a gold one, but I need a stronger magnet setup.Which combadge is that? Just looks thicker than the Fansets to me. Thanks.
Thanks. I have a solid metal pin one but it’s silver instead of chrome and the length of the gray parts are slightly longer than they should be. If I pinned one I’d keep it permanent but would still not want to perf the leather I think. Its a Kenny Ambrose, but it's also really close to the pin ones on ebay. The groove is a need. I am also working on screw in Pips as I am not secure in the magnets for this, I'd rather have them permanent.
Looks like the biggest difference people noticed is the ELS jacket isn’t as squared off in the shoulders. I hasn’t really thought about it. The “hero” screen ones do appear as to have shoulder pads in there the way it bunches up. Not a dealbreaker for me.There’s a guy in the Star Trek Costume Group on Facebook that received his gold one from ELS 2 days ago and posted comparisons of it and 2 others he bought from other companies and he did side by side photos and descriptions.
I've snipped the pins and added magnets to those ones.Thanks. I have a solid metal pin one but it’s silver instead of chrome and the length of the gray parts are slightly longer than they should be. If I pinned one I’d keep it permanent but would still not want to perf the leather I think.
If you were going to wear it to a con with no intention of taking it off, you could add shoulder pads to whatever shirt you wore under it. The look would be the same.Looks like the biggest difference people noticed is the ELS jacket isn’t as squared off in the shoulders. I hasn’t really thought about it. Yes, we are curious! Can’t wait to see.
The free shipping is still free for this jacket, and there are not plans to change that.Disclaimer: I was an earlier purchaser, so I received a discount/ free shipping.
The zipper slider doesn’t quite match the jacket. With mine, it’s a standard YKK silver slider, with the tab portion encased in a thick black plastic cover. In production photos, the slider appears to be naked metal and flat, black and rectangular. The zipper slider’s plastic cover makes it difficult to tuck/ conceal it between the leather flaps that hide the zipper teeth. At rest, it usually lays at an angle, protruding from the chest. For future jackets, I would definitely search for a better slider.

I'm curious what references you have for the zipper being flat, black, rectangular metal.
The below photos are all from screen used jackets, from several different characters.

Thanks for the detailed review here. Really looking forward to getting mine which is also the command “red.”Review time!
I received my jacket a few days ago and wanted to leave a proper full length review. The below represents my experience only, as well as my collection of information across 30 pages in this thread. I’m also new to RPF, and haven’t had much experience with ordering custom jackets before. That said, I would put the overall experience as 9/10, as detailed below:
Intro
After watching and loving Picard Season 3, I did some random Google searches about the season in April 2023 and came across Jameel’s thread regarding these jackets. As a lover of leather jackets (bomber jackets especially), I was immediately interested. One of the standouts of Picard S3 is its costume design, and the jackets are a showstopper. I’ve seen a lot of Trek; not all generations/ seasons, granted, but enough to know that the costume design of Picard S3 was a cut above the rest. In short: I needed to have that jacket.
I came across Jameel’s thread first, but early on, Jameel and Zlurpo coordinated, and combined their correspondence with the community through this thread (Zlurpo’s; hence the length of the thread). As a newcomer to RPF, my interest was validated over the early pages as I watched Jameel’s and Zlurpo’s scrutiny of photos of the production jackets (both on screen and on display) and their interaction with the community to get the reproductions as exact as possible. To be sure, after having received my jacket, their efforts paid off.
Division Colors
The jacket I ordered was the command ‘red’ jacket. I feel like a necessary word of caution is due: to those who are expecting the classic, brighter command red, Jameel’s and Zlurpo’s is not the jacket for you. The color for the command jacket, as seen in Picard S3, is indeed Pantone 7610 C. This was confirmed via Dave Blass on Twitter, and so this red-brown color represents the correct hue used in production.
However, to the layman’s eyes, this red will present as brown, regardless if in daylight or indoor lighting. Whether that is a deal breaker for you is a personal preference; for me, it is a bonus. I intent to wear the jacket out in public for all sorts of purposes. I highly doubt, upon first glance, that anyone would connect it to being a Trek jacket (again, whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you). From the photos of the science ‘blue’ jacket, I’d imagine the same applies. Maybe only with the engineering ‘yellow’ jacket would anyone immediately associate it with you being a Trekkie. All that said, the brownish hue of the command jacket’s shoulders pairs very well with the black leather. It definitely has an overall understated appearance, and I like that.
Fabric & Finish
Looking back over the many pages, I tried to deduce what type of leather was used. From their posts, it seems Jameel and Zlurpo used cow or sheepskin, or some combination of the two. Either way, the jacket’s appearance is excellent. Not too shiny, not too flat, and feels supple. The contours and seams lend themselves to an overall “biker jacket” appearance, which again for me is great. The textures throughout are nice too. Going with the perforated delta pattern on the shoulders was the correct call, and the polyester fabric under the shoulders gives it appropriate weight. Elsewhere, the stretch interlock fabric used for the arm creases allows for good movement and comfort. Clearly, the Picard costume designers knew what they were doing, and Jameel and Zlurpo were able to replicate that to perfection.
Note: there are no outer pockets on this jacket. Functional features of the jacket include an inner vertical pocket (left side), as well as two magnets sewn into the zipper flap located at the bottom of the jacket. A very nice added touch, and pretty cool too.
Also, regarding the quilted vs thin jacket lining that was a concern earlier in this thread: I ordered the quilted jacket. It is not as “quilted” as what some people might be thinking, which is probably in relation to an actual quilt, or padded winter jacket. It is perhaps “quilted” in patterning only, and to think “padded” would not be a correct assumption. It is actually quite thin for a quilted liner, and is nice to the touch. To be honest, given how thin the quilted liner is, I can’t imagine how thin the ‘thin’ liner is! Someone will have to let us know. But if you’re thinking you’re going to overheat with the quilted version in an indoor setting, rest assured, you won’t: the jacket is comfortable and cool indoors in a typical 70F / 21C setting.
Measurements
I ordered through Jameel and Excellent Leather Shop (ELS), and as recommended, I had my measurements taken professionally. The first time was done by a local tailor, the second time was done by a national tailor chain for added assurance. Believe it or not, I was much more confident with the measurements taken by the national tailor, so don’t let the tailor being a chain dissuade you from going there. Overall (see exception below), my measurements lead to a jacket that is pretty much exact, and it fits excellently. Provided you get your measurements taken professionally, you should be very happy with the finished product.
As for correspondence, I appreciated Jameel’s and ELS’s contact with me across the many weeks. They were always prompt in returning my questions, whether through the forums or by email, and made me feel like a valued customer.
Shipping
Disclaimer: I was an earlier purchaser, so I received a discount/ free shipping.
Shipping was excellent. Relative to where I live, the jacket was shipped from roughly half way around the world, and was mailed via FedEx with a tracker. It took two days for delivery, and I live in the US. To be honest, the jacket came in a much smaller parcel than what I was expecting! Was nicely packaged too, with no damage. Like mine, your leather jacket will likely have creases along the chest/body from being folded for shipping. Just set it outside on a nice sunny day and the warmth will loosen the leather and the creases.
Criticism/ Advice
The zipper slider doesn’t quite match the jacket. With mine, it’s a standard YKK silver slider, with the tab portion encased in a thick black plastic cover. In production photos, the slider appears to be naked metal and flat, black and rectangular. The zipper slider’s plastic cover makes it difficult to tuck/ conceal it between the leather flaps that hide the zipper teeth. At rest, it usually lays at an angle, protruding from the chest. For future jackets, I would definitely search for a better slider.
I also have an issue with the bottom contour of my jacket. I don’t know if this is a measurement flaw (me) or a design flaw (them), but the jacket I received doesn’t taper correctly near the bottom. As a man, I have typical flat sides to my chest/ torso, along the lines of V-shaped. Similar to how shirts fall, I expected a mostly flat contour to the sides of the jacket. It was to my surprise that the bottom 6” or so taper out quite a bit, and I’m not exactly sure of the reason for that. In fact, the taper seems to be more akin to how a women’s jacket falls than a men’s jacket. I will definitely need to have this taken in at a tailor because currently, there is too much outward taper in that bottom 6” of length. I won’t blame Jameel or Zlurpo, as it’s probably related to the measurements I provided to them.
With that said, you all should be very happy with your purchases. Jameel and Zlurpo have shown that they are not only good at tailoring, but reproductions as well. I am beyond impressed and highly recommend this jacket.
Edit: spelling and grammar corrections; also, photos to follow at a later point.
All three of the pictures you linked 100% have a black plastic cover on the zipper tab.Seems to be different in different shots, to be honest. I agree I does seem to be more silvery, but whether the slider has a black plastic cover is up in the air I think. Some of those sliders clearly don’t have one, and based on how it fits easily under the leather zipper flaps in those photos, my guess is not having a bulky plastic cover is the better way to go.
