Unlimited Run Star Trek: Picard, Away Jackets, Now Taking Orders!

What do you think to this guy's comments on Facebook after I commented on his new jacket and the one you guys are making for me? Is our jacket too shiny all over? His is far too shiny on the lower panels for me. It looks like refuse sacks.View attachment 1711781View attachment 1711783View attachment 1711784

as discussed earlier the screen jackets had portions of sanded and painted leather making them more flat and matte in shine and color. Which takes a lot of time and effort to accomplish. And it all depends on lighting and what type of leather is used in the first place.

I think the amount of attention to detail documented in this thread shows the efforts of getting as close that what the Picard costume department produced as reasonably possible. Those efforts take A LOT of time. Consequently, people who have ordered from other sources with less attention to detail already have their jackets while we wait for a more accurate version. Unless those buyers are representing their purchase as a perfect replica or something like that, I not sure there’s a benefit of telling them their jacket isn’t good enough.

In those 4 video sequences with more lighting you can take a better look at the "real shinyness"

Nice reference. The inset panels do appear to be a slightly more shiny finish than the rest but there isn't much in it. Certainly not as shiny as that guys jacket was on the inset panels on his. I do wonder if ours should be less shiny on the main parts but the same shiny level it is now on the insets?

I wasn't telling him that his wasn't good enough but he was saying that the one he has looks more like the real deal than ours. I had posted ours on another post previously saying that I was eagerly awaiting a screen accurate one from here. Someone asked to see a picture and when I showed it that guy piped up that it didn't look right so he didn't think it was accurate. I disagreed. I came here for authenticity much like all of us here.

The screen used jackets definitely had a lot of processes happen that we just aren't going to do. We don't have a costume department that can sand, paint, and sand every piece of leather.

That said, so far none of the pictures we have shone have actually shown the final shine levels. There are leather treatments that will be done to the final jackets that reduce the shine.

This picture is the one I most trust for all things color and shine:

Why? I think it's a professionally shot, professionally lit picture. I don't believe it was casually snapped using a cell phone. We aren't seeing set lighting. This, I believe, is a shot that was set up by a photographer, including lights specifically for still photography.

So I think it captures the jackets better than any other shot out there. Not to mention that the color on Riker's jacket is just absolutely perfect for the one pantone color we know 100% to be right.

To me it looks like the perforated black panels are not as matte as the rest of the black portions (with the non-leather portions on the sleeves of course being the least shiny of all).

Nice catch singling this pic out. The lighting certainly does look that it was set up to capture the whole group-as a cast instead of as characters.

Not everyone has a professional coat maker and obsessed fans working together. Some others just don't see details. Some are just "good enough" types. I see all the differences. I care to make best as possible so that's why I offered the help and photos I could to Jameel and Zlurpo.

Yes I agree with this. I personally think what you are doing is excellent and I voted with my wallet pretty much as it was announced that you were doing it.!!

Honestly, the "shine" on a good piece of leather fades rather soon with wear anyway, a couple of weeks in and the jacket will be looking fairly flat....My Thor jacket from Jameel followed the same pattern, and is now a lovely flat red tone....So these jackets, even if the leather IS "too shiny" will soon fade....The show jackets were weathered, and the same could very easily be done by us, so complaining about that? Seems to miss the point by a fair mile.....Colours? Sure, that's something we can debate, and actually "get right"....And I think the team here have, totally nailed that aspect....

That's all that I was worried about with this project.....The work here has been put in and the jacket really does look superb.....

Great points. What’s kinda funny when you think about it is “in universe” whoever that child of an admiral who is in charge of Starfleet uniforms programmed the replicator parameters to “make it look like it’s been broken in a bit.” (That’s my head canon for why the uniforms change so often—the admiral in charge of uniforms had a kid who became a fashion designer.)

The red and yellow jackets have shipped to me, currently expected to arrive around the 27th.

We're still working on getting the blue leather, but I will take pics of the first two, and temporarily photoshop the blue color until we have that. Once those photos are posted the pre-order discount will end.

Excellent. Have you any idea when the orders will start to ship? I ordered mine with Jameel.

It is 104°F and feels like 114° right now—but I’m still excited although I’ll be waiting a bit longer for the blue. (Looking into cooling vests to be able to wear for a Labor Day weekend convention.)
Hopefully the delay for the blue is only by about a week.

Yeah, Tokyo will be deep in summer heat by the time it arrives, but that's all good, I'm more than used to half my clothes being entirely unusable for half the year now, living in Japan....And it'll be autumn soon enough!

Thanks for ALL the work on this, everyone on this post.....I genuinely think we made it the most accurate it can be, and I can't wait to see the end result once it's here!

Brilliant stuff all!

Just thinking about accessories. The links to the pips that have already been posted look great. Im now thinking about a delta badge. Ive found a few online, ebay etc and whilst all very nicely made from metal. They all seem a bit small. The ones ive found are 65mm tall. If you look into it it appears the badge should be 70mm tall. Doesnt sound like much but side by side its a big difference.

Anyone know any correct sized sellers?

At the risk of the thread being hijacked by another topic, I'm going to say that I've also been trying to find a cosplay combadge that is magnetic. I have the one from fansets, but I'm worried about it falling off when wearing this jacket at conventions.
