Limited Run Shawshank Redemption Rock Hammer Project Run

Project update 10-7-14

After taking photos of a completed piece I started to think that the rivet head size I was using was too large, and it was. Then I zoomed into the photo I have of one of the hero props and made a new discovery.....they are NOT rivets. They are some sort of standard head screws! Here are a couple enhanced pics to show my point:

So I've spent hours now trying to find what these are, and I think I'm close. They look to be a smaller variation of a binding screw, like this:

Aluminum Binding Posts & Screws.jpg

With everyone's permission I'd like to hunt down these screws. If I put rivets in these handles they will be VERY difficult to remove, and removing them may damage the wood handles.

Let me know your thoughts.

I'm all for hunting down the binding screws too. Know the true value near here had a bunch of different varieties, but not sure on sizes. Thinking the length of the binding post could be cut down if needed, so really just the diameter of the post and screw head that's important.

These are like binding screws but the ones used in knife handles are called "Chicago screws." You might have more luck finding them under that name.

There are definitely a lot more options when searching Chicago screws, thanks ahoudini.

I've got a few emails out to the knife kit suppliers and such. In case anyone is also looking, here are the details of what we need:

Our part: 1/8" thick tang and each handle will be 1/4" thick. Total thickness of assembled piece will be 5/8".
The head size MUST be 3/16" in diameter. These must be silver aluminum in color and they must have a slotted head.

Project update 10-14-14

I think that I've found what I'm going to go with. The threaded barrel and slotted flat head screw combo.

Here is a pic of the barrel, just ignore the phillips head screws in the pic, they'll be replaced.

To make this happen I'll need to order a few, drill out the existing 1/16" diameter holes in the steel tang and assemble it.

Love to get some feedback from you guys first. If this looks like a plan I'll order a few, apply this to one of the hammers and post pics. Thanks again to everyone here for your patience while I get this right.

Looks just right to me. Seems like, for the era, brass, flat head slotted screws would be right. That way, they will counter sink nicely and patina easily.

Sound good! I've got an email into the supplier for these threaded barrels (the site is down until 10-20-14 due to the business moving to a new location) so as soon as I can I'll be ordering (3) of these. I'll let everyone know when I have them ordered and when I expect to have new progress photos.

Update 10-22-14

I received a response from the threaded barrel supplier and he said that these should show up on the website this Friday and be available for purchase. I will be ordering them Friday and will post pics when I get one done up. Thanks again everyone for your patience.

Project Update 10-28-14

Ok, so I have the small sample set of threaded barrels in my hands now and I've determined that these should work perfectly. These things are TINY! Here are a couple of pics:

So, now I have both 6mm long and 8mm long screws coming to me from across the pond. I looked high and low and couldn't find a US supplier, so it will take a bit to get them in my hands. As soon as I have them I will be ready to assemble one of these hammers and post pics for everyone to see.

Thanks again everyone for your continued patience. Getting close now.

Thanks for the update. No hurry here either. Just sitting in my cell, waiting for a means to dig myself out :)

No rush for me either. Knowing that your working on this project and kind enough to post photos and updates is fine by me.

Project update 11-6-14

I have the screws now and plan to work on getting a finished piece this weekend. My first attempt at putting together a finished hammer (I used my plastic prototype) is coming along GREAT. I am 100% thrilled with the look of this piece and I can't wait to post pics of a final Shawshank hammer prop :)

Thanks for the update Ss. But can we hurry it along. This cell's getting cold and the Sister's are giving me funny looks :p

Seriously though . . . . thanks for the update. :)

Project update 11-9-14

Once again thank you all for your patience with this project. I'm now in the final production stage with all of the hammers. I should have all paid orders finished and mailed out this week:
