Guys, how you like this idea?):)

Contacting Renée was discussed before and never followed up on. She doesn't seem to have much of a public presence and those who enjoy communicating with fans usually make themselves pretty well known through social media and the like. With those elusive individuals, it becomes a case of trawling the net for contact information or former workplaces and I didn't feel comfortable with the 'intrusive' nature of it, so I gave up.

Having said that, there may well be others in the above list with a more 'accessible' online presence who would happily answer questions on her behalf.

Personally, it makes little difference to me now as I have a jacket en route and boots/pants/sweater that I'm happy will be 95% accurate with a little tweaking.

So, I know this thread is about K's costume, but I was watching the film last night and I noticed some similarities between K's coat and a couple of coats that Luv wears during the film. Specifically, a longer white coat similar in length to K's that she wears when visiting K's apartment and when confronting LT. Joshi at the police station, and a shorter black jacket that she wears in her final scenes. (Sorry, I couldn't find a good image of that jacket from the film, so here is an action figure which shows the details that I'm interested in.)

blade_runner_luv.png TRI-SS-02611_R.jpg LUV3.jpg

The white coat has a similar length to K's coat, and the front closure is cut in a very similar fashion. It also has a similar diamond quilted pattern inside, albeit much smaller. Both coats have a distinct construction at the elbow that mirrors a detail on K's coat, widening towards the back and narrow towards the front. Both coats have an asymmetric collar that extends into a hood, while K's coat has a collar that becomes a faceguard. I believe that both coats also have an uneven opening at the wrist, being extended to cover more of the back of the hand. (Luv's boots have a similar detail where they extend further upwards on the outside of the leg.)

Anyway, I thought that was interesting. It may give some insight into the in-universe source of K's coat. I've read speculation that maybe it was issued to him as a replicant, or maybe he took it off of a replicant that he retired. Either way, the similarities in construction to the films second most prominent replicant character are interesting, and point to there perhaps being a common source.

My theory is that the cost is military surplus. Since he has little money, he probably picked it up secondhand. The Nexus7 number on the back belonged to the replicant to whom it was issued. Maybe it was issued during the Battle of Calantha. This would explain why it green as well. Assuming military stuff is still green in this version of the future.

I've considered that theory as well, but another image posted here included a still from one of the documenteries that showed an extra with almost the same screen printing on their jacket. On this jacket, the printing was horizontal, and some of the digits were extended above where they were apparently cut off on the right side on K's coat. What appeared to be a 7 on K's coat was actually the lower half of the number 2.

Here's that image, for reference.

And here is the text compared to the back of the action figure, which I think is the most official source that shows the writing clearly.

On the left it looks like it could be 50100H2U or solooH20 or some variation. On the right, it could be n7H00105 or 02HOOIOS or some variation.

alright, I've got some shots of my paint tests, I'd like some opinions.

These are the same pieces under various lighting conditions around my house (as labeled).

- The two Phthalo Green pieces are painted with a mixture of Phthalo Green + Liquitex Gloss Medium + Liquitex Fabric Medium
- The forest green piece is a mix of Forest Green + Liquitex Gloss Medium with a light coat of the Liquitex Satin Varnish.

The original charcoal fabric can be seen in the bottom left pictures.

My thoughts:
I feel like in almost all the conditions (including in person) that the Phthalo matches what my eye expects the coat to look like. Outside and under the warm led it's very similar to it's appearance outside Sapper's farm and inside Mr Cotton's office. Under the very warm fluoro, the green becomes so muted it starts to look more like the coat that was on display at the Arc theater, which actually surprised me.

For the writing on the back, the black works fine for the forest green, but it's a bit strong on the Phthalo. The solution might be to mix a little phthalo in with the black to blend it a bit more.

also, as far as a sealant goes, I felt a lot better using the gloss medium compared to the varnish. The varnish in some cases was changing the colour of the paint and since it went on separate to the paint it wasn't as easy to get a consistent finish (compared to the gloss medium being mixed into the paint).

but yeah, I'm curious to see what you guys think. My main priority is to get a finish I can do consistently because I'm making 2 of theses coats and there's about 40 odd bits of canvas in each one...

100% AGREE PHTHALO GREEN SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT COLOR! Great work my friend! This is probably the closest color we'll get to the film IMO. everytime I look at the main jacket I cant tell whether its blue or green and I can somewhat see that effect with this color in different lightings. (edit: after reviewing the photos I'd say its still the right color but just a bit darker would probably be even more accurate)

I'm just trying to figure out how I'd try to mimic this color if my jackets already green instead of charcoal :unsure:lol

I'd have to say forest green is closer to the color most of the time, BUT I wouldn't settle for either . The forest green is dark enough to match how the coat can sometimes look dark grey or black in the film (when he's being lead through the Wallace archives or when he meets Mariette in the rain). In the top left pictures the Phthalo is way too light. There are times when the onscreen color grading is more obvious (sapper's farm or san diego where his spinner gets shot down) and we can see the hues of turquoise; which personally I really do like. If I were you I would try to darken the Phthalo significantly (maybe mixing it with forest green?) to the point where the color passes for a dark charcoal with hues of turquoise.

Agree with nexusplexus, the colour is between phtalo and forest green. The turquoise tone of phtalo is excellent, but is too light.

cool, thanks for the thoughts, I'll do some tests today mixing a little forest green into the phthalo and see how it looks.

i also just took a few quick shots of the phthalo inside in the natural overcast light (and shadow) as the outside photos actually made it look brighter than it is (it's still bright though).

Progress!

I was trying to mix the phthalo and the forest green on a palette and it just wasn't consistent enough for my liking, so I decided to bite the bullet and just mix it straight in the pot. This is how dark the mix is now (original on the left), I may yet darken it a little more, but I'm pretty okay with it:

This was the 250ml pot of Phthalo, with maybe 10 small brushloads of Forest Green in it. I also pre-mixed some of the fabric medium and the gloss medium in.

And these are the results, I'm personally pretty pleased. I'm making these coats as though they're brand new, so I'm okay with it looking a little bright. I'll be weathering post-construction which should knock it back a bit.

(Quick note: One thing to consider about the greyer coat at the ARC is that that's a coat from the end of the movie, judging by the level of blood on it, so it's likely been in a LOT of water, and a lot of the green could have leeched out.)

Yes! That looks more like it. I think you could even go a bit darker. Did you post how you're applying this in this thread? I'm going to backtrack and look for it.

Just brushing it on, and yeah, I might go a little darker with it before I do the final painting.

That is beautiful!

I also think the Phthalo could go even darker, nevertheless its looking like you'll end up with the best color for the coat hands down (even the sheen looks great). Could you comment on the texture and feel of your test swatches? I'll likely follow suit with my coat but I'm curious as to how it could affect the fabric. Also throwing them in the wash to see if the paint job bleeds could let us know whether a varnish coat is necessary. Thanks for sharing
