Re: Free Paper Prop Thread #4 - 2009

Update on the Terminator Wanted Poster: Not too long ago, Contec submitted a link to a Terminator sketch by PredatrHuntr on DeviantArt. I got in contact with him asking if it was okay if I could use his sketch (linked below) for the Terminator Wanted Poster. I had submitted a PM to him prior to everyone joining in with trying to "sketchify" the picture of Arnold. I just got a reply back. And this is good news: As long as you show me the end result you are more than welcome to use the sketch. Thank you for asking!

So, this means that I may be able to use the sketch, even if it has sunglasses (and with Xxblackbird's comments about sunglasses being incorporated in sketches, to which I know is true, since the Unibomber sketch used it). Now, the big question is, do I use the "security camera" picture for Version 3.0 and just have the sketch, or do I leave it there?

Well, it is your wanted poster, so use it if you like it. I think it is cool that your diligence resulted in a response from that artist. Personally, I think it is the least talented of the sketches that were thrown up there. Some of the images are admittedly too good and more akin to celebrity glamor shots.

I like the security camera shot. The fact that in the history of the world there has been a police sketch or three done with sunglasses on the subject of the sketch proves nothing.

Other than the fact that certain RPFers love nothing more than an argument over trivial semantics. :love:angry:love

When witnesses of a subject without sunglasses have been available, authorities use those descriptions when compiling a sketch. The Unibomber witness saw Ted K. in a hood and glasses. There was no one else to use while compiling a sketch. That's the reason for that version of the sketch. No possible alternative available at that time. End of story.

You can bet that if they had security camera footage in their possession, they would have used that. You can bet if they had a witness at the scene who saw Teddy without sunglasses, they would've done a sketch of him without them.

That is just my considered opinion.

Thanks for your opinion, Outlander. :) I'm definitely going to use the sketch, primarily because it looks more like a police sketch than most of the others, even if it has sunglasses in both images or not (besides, people find the image of the Terminator with sunglasses more iconic, next to having the flesh ripped off, than they do with him without the sunglasses).

Ok, as a law enforcement professional with a degree in criminal justice, I will say a GOOD portion of police sketches, especially those involving robberies or planned acts of violence, include sunglasses and / or masks. I'll also say eye witnesses are horribly inaccurate, especially those who've been involved in events similar to the ones seen in T1.
As mentioned, the Terminator only wore his sunglasses in the latter part of the film. Most of the people who saw him, saw him without sunglasses. The questions are, would they be reliable witnesses? Would they be coherent and stable enough to provide an accurate description? Would they be available for police questioning (or would they have fled the scene)? Would they cooperate?
If the only reliable witness describes him with sunglasses, the sketch artist would draw him with sunglasses. Period. If the sketch artist decided, nah, I probably shouldn't include sunglasses so I'll sketch some eyes no one has ever seen, he risks the chance of eliminating some tremendous descriptors (such as scars, a missing eye, black eye, etc.).
Again, it is the practice of some artists to draw, in ADDITION to the original, a series of "what if" sketches that may include glasses, hats, beards, etc.
Again, and for the last time, it is not unheard of for a police sketch to include sunglasses. In no way, shape or form is it odd, strange, rare or anything else. It's common.
Now, for the Terminator himself, there probably would be a few eyewitnesses who can describe him without sunglasses. It's been a while since I've seen it so it's hard for me to comment conclusively. I seem to remember some punkers he attacked (likely wouldn't cooperate with cops), a hotel manager (the police probably wouldn't know about him to question him), all the people at the club (who were in the middle of a firefight... when a shotgun goes off, your eyes go to the floor and stay there. You'd be lucky to remember the race of the shooter). But he was still in public and was a large, noticeable guy.
I also don't think an artists composite of him wearing sunglasses next to a clear image of him wearing sunglasses is too likely. Still, though, it is the iconic image of the Terminator and the image resembles a police sketch more closely than most of the others I've seen.
To make it a little more realistic and justify using the sketch, you can try to blur the security camera shot a little. You can blame it on 1980's photocapture / reproduction techniques.

Above is another business card, I made it as authentic as possible (size, colors, font, address) even when this is non-canon at all. But fun to do.

Enjoy
