MR Stormtrooper helmet. Opnions?

Isn't it also a bit odd that they would mould a stunt in order to produce a hero? However, the MR piece also bears more resemblance to the stunt than it does the hero. To me, the stunt and the hero look like two completely different helmets, especially in the grin.

Just like they said, the hero and stunt helmets came from the same mold. It was assembly and painting that made them different. If you make a new mold of one, you have a mold for the other.

Jay,

to some extent I think you're correct - except the Hero's were made a few weeks after the Stunts at which point the moulds had been damaged in a number of areas (the reduced undercuts for one, as the opening seems much larger). In additon the HDPE Stunts vacformed differently from the Hero's which result in slight variations in certain areas - such as the "pinching" in the tears, which dont seem to be present on the Hero's (and cetainly not the TIE's which were done at the same time and from a similar ABS).

However I suppose they could "remove" the specific "tells" that the Stunts have but the Hero's dont

Wouldn't molding the insides of a helmet and then that cast be molded as a fiberglass mold not simply create a replica of the original molds, rather than the look of the vac-formed helmets?

Molding the inside only makes sense if you are planning on vac-forming the helmets. If you wanna do fiberglass casts, you would have to mold the outside of the helmet in order to replicate the look. Heck... even the fiberglass recasts on eBay look better than this, because they know the dynamics of retaining the look - even though their casts may be seriously lacking in quality.

I HATE IT!!!!!!! i cant see how lucas even passed this for approval.... i wont buy one.......i am not sure if lucas even say this ......i really hate it.:thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown

I'll wait to see the final product.
I just wish MR would wait until the final product is ready before showing us pictures.
Saying that - I guess the old belief is true, all publicity is good publicity.

I put in an order just for the hell of it. I can always cancel it if need be. There's no way I am parting with my GF lid though :love

Man, false advertising sucks. :lolHow does a company get the gall to lie to all its customers like that? :coolAAccurate indeed!

Yeah... 'cos George signs off on all these things, eh? :lol

But yeah, it's not looking too good. I'll wait until the real version turns up and I'll judge it then. :)

While the above is true, if you listen to the podcast they said that they scanned the inside to capture all of the features and then were going to increase the overall size of the helmet to compensate for the vac-formed material thickness.

Despite that, I still think MR is going about it the wrong way. And honestly no one in this community is going to be truely happy with the MR trooper helmet no matter how they go about offering it. If it were vac-formed from original molds, something would be wrong. It would be put together wrong, or not sharp enough, or too sharp, or painted wrong, etc. We are too damned picky, bottom line!

That being said, I hope the real deal looks hands down better than the prototype. Here's to hoping. (y)wacko

Who would have thought that a post about an MR helmet would turn into a 10 page "discussion" about what was used in filming and what was not, lenses, brows, recasting, designs, etc etc etc. Shocker :rolleyes

Given the amount of consesus of the "experts" on this board - and the fact that everyone agrees what is "accurate" and what is not I just don't understand why MR could not make a helmet that pleases everyone.:angel

Well.. I would have bought the symetrical one they were showcasing at C3. I won't touch this one. It just looks 'off'.

I agree (with Knight Asyum). The vast majority of "fans" have no inkling of what an original film prop looks like and most probably wouldnt want a collectible to have the same build quality and level of finish as an original lid. Commercially their decisions seem to make sound sense.

The MR helmets serve a certain part of the market (and given it looks like the sold near 500 in their first day it looks like a fairly big slice), and it was probably unrealistic to think that they were going to make a volume-produced fiberglass helmet which is identical to a flimsy ABS hand-made prop.

I'm expecting the production version to be an improvement anyway, and for what it is, IMO it'll be a nice collectible.

Agreed...I'd much rather see this one...

From Jez's site...

Yup Thats how I feel, I was wanting this helmet with it being symmetrical and idealized to being what the imperial armory would have been churning out and not the wonky helmets from the movie.

I cant stand the one MR is going to produce.
