Doctor Who - A Journal of Impossible Things (Novelized Version)

We're such nerds, debating over the proper numbers in a barcode that we can hardly read haha!

Let's at least agree that the last two digits are both threes!

Here's a generator for barcodes (all sorts).

-Nick

I think I'm past the barcode generator. I'm almost done and it's looking pretty good. Still not happy with my fonts though. Is the book synopsis in the same font as the title?

Yes. The text lines up perfectly if you use the title font.

And my barcode looks fine...it's not like anyone's going to try to scan your book. And if they do, they're bigger nerds than we are.

Though I have to say, after playing around with the generator, I'm almost positive the first numbers are 9 31546 095056. (The stripes generated by the EAN generators look almost perfect for those numbers)

...I'm taking a bit of a break for the night. My computer needs it.

-Nick

Where is this barcode generator? There wasn't a link in your last post.

And what kind of hardware are you running on if you don't mind my asking that this is taxing your system so hard?

That's what I get for staying up all last night tracking down the fob watch image. Here you go: http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/

Sorry about that.

And I'm running a first gen intel imac (white)...I'm stuck on this since I ran my actual editing (Video and image) computer into the ground. Killed 2 hard drives in a 6 month period. It also doesn't help that I LOVE working at extremely high resolutions where ever possible. There have been times where I've been working at around 1200 PPI...which was a huge pain when my calculations had the cover width at 21.5 inches.

-Nick

Ah, yea I'm just doing 300 DPI. That's the best resolution I could get out of the author image and spine watch, so I went with it.

EDIT: I just get errors with that generator.

Don't put spaces in, and do it in chunks sized according to the number after "EAN." So, EAN-5 would have you doing it in 5 digit chunks.

I wish I understood how EAN assigns checksums in their barcodes, because some of the numbers we're looking on the back of the book are actually generated by the OTHER numbers that precede them.

-Nick

Hm. I think I'll just stick with my current barcode then. I just installed the title font, so next up is finishing the back.

And the back is finished! Glad that's over with. I hate adjusting kerning. Now for the title, then I'll call it a night as well.

Do you know how many times I told myself that very same thing last night?

...Let's just say I went to bed around 8:30 AM.

Maybe I'm just too used to working with trade-sized hardbacks, but are you sure those dimensions are correct for the Torchwood book? it just makes the covers feel a little skinny.

I have one on order, so I guess I'll soon find out.

-Nick

I can't say for a fact they're accurate because I don't have one in hand, but my sister's a college graduate, so I'd hope she knows how to use a ruler. :)

As a college grad myself, I can tell you sometimes the basics like measuring are the first things that go. haha

Anyhoo, I decided to start over again today (About 2 hours ago) and am now just about finished. The only major thing I have to do still (Besides the random lens flare) is create the runes/design behind the fob watch...then I have to work out what to write on the inside jacket flaps.

After that, it's just a lot of tweaking.

I also want to give a big thank you to Risu! Without your journal picture, my cover would be severely lacking in the fake leather department.

On with the progress pic:

So what do you think?

-Nick

SWEET!!!! That is looking seriously awesome. I've been working on mine for about an hour or so but I'm not the fastest Photoshopper lol. I'm very happy with it so far though. Will post a progress pic when I get a bit more done which will probably be tomorrow as I'm off out tonight. To be fair though, I'd rather stay home and work on this some more lol.

Where did you get the journal pic from? That is awesome. I'm still unsure about what to do for the background unless you'd like to share that BG image? :p

I can't help you with the journal picture...but maybe someone else around here can. ;)

Good luck...this is a really addicting project, but I'm glad you're choosing to have a life instead of working on this.

Anyhoo, here's one other thing I did today. To help us with the barcoding, I cleaned up the image and straightened it as best as I could. Here's what I came up with:

Picture10-1.png

That looks like: 9 81846 091055 52506536533 (I'm sticking with that)

Happy dust jacketing!

I'm not really choosing life over this. More like an obligation. Either way, it'll be fun and I'll get back on this tomorrow morning.

That's great. The numbers seem a little cleaner and easier to read in places. I still feel like it's 091085 though. Other than that, your numbers are the same as my guess too.

Well, here's what I'm doing with my life...working on Gallifreyan runes! (I was planning on waiting until tomorrow to do this, but I couldn't help myself)

Picture12.jpg

It just needs a few squiggly bits and a few more circletacular doohickies and it'll be complete.

You know one thing begs a question, how would the grand-daughter get a picture of the watch which was given to the boy, right? I can't remember who wound up with the watch as the Doctor departed, but I don't think it was the matron. It was unclear what year the Doctor and Martha visited the WWI memorial where the boy was the old man in the wheelchair but I thought he had the watch there.

She could have always gotten her cover artist to make an artist's impression of it based on the sketch John Smith made of it in his journal.

...Or it could just be a TV show. ;)

I'm more confused as to how they crafted accurate Gallifreyan writing considering it doesn't appear anywhere in John Smith's journal, and also considering that the Gallifreyan people have been timelocked for quite some time.

...perhaps the artist was a Timelord.
