Amazing project!

Are you going to weld all the seams when done? Having built a bumper or two, I know how much work that is!! o_O

All seams will be filled, ground smooth, then body work will begin. I built a 70 Chevelle years ago, replaced every body panel on it. Tons of custom metal work including narrowing the bumpers for that flush fit like you see Chip Foose do on “Overhauling” I’m self taught so many mistakes were made and continue to this day.
Plus one reason I’m not welding seams solid now, is in case something doesn’t work right or has to be removed it’s just easier to cut all the tack welds and remove.

Very impressive work. The stand and the angle you have set the x wing at make a really dynamic display.

One more pic at different angle. I just stuck the smaller diameter tubes in the cannons to see total length. Yes they are NOT straight, as is a lot of it right now. The rear of the engines have tons of pieces to be added. Lots of fine tuning to get measurements correct. Then the detailing can begin soon. I want my garage back. LOL

Would you believe this is 2 days of, cut, grind, weld, cuss, remove, repeat. I at least finished up the design for the base. So much welding and grinding smooth to do. I never can take a picture of the base without it looking like the stand is not straight, I guess all the compound curves just don’t lend themselves to pictures.

Here’s a pic of part of the engines. I found some aluminum bars that I’m going to attach for the engine nozzles, still have to bevel the ends and fine tune them before finally attaching, but you get where I’m going. And for some idea of how big these are, the nozzle diameter is 3 1/4” and the total length is 12 1/4”

Good on you for Perseverance (y). Fantastic work
and keep it up. Are you going for ALL Details in metal, or are some going to be in plastic to help keep the weight down?

What I’m leaning towards now is trying to find someone who could 3D print me some areas I could attach to what I have. Like the area on top behind r2 that has all that detail and the rear details that go on what I finished today. Never messed with a 3D printer and really don’t want to purchase one just for this. I would hope someone could just scale up some files that are already out there to 1/8th to fit. Or maybe I would give them the size of the area I’m needing to fill and they could stretch the file to fit. Really just don’t know how the 3D printer guys do what they do, but much respect.

Seams have been filled and ground. Assembled once more just to make sure all gaps are right and nothing has warped. Found a couple of areas that a little extra body filler will have to correct, but I’ll never point them out.
Going to try and get all the welds filed down and straight so I can at least get a coat of epoxy primer on it so I don’t have to worry anymore about rust. But the engines and cannons will have to stay raw cause there is still more pieces to add.
Plus I cleaned up where the base meets the fuselage, but haven’t welded out the base.

Well if I would have stuck with my original plan I would almost be finished, just put a coat of flat black paint and outside she goes. That went out the window. Time to break it back down and start all the body work. Once the body work is done I can start adding all the detail stuff.
I think I’ve come up with a plan to put it in my movie memorabilia room, It requires a 5’2” square footprint, and 6’1” of height, that’s if I angle it in a corner. Bad thing is this room is small, I mean small. I’ve already got a full size R2 (another work in progress), and a completed TOS Captains chair In there. Which leaves little to no room to walk in the room. Oh well.
Got a final measurement on the overall length now that the engine nozzles are on, 65”. As I break it down I’m going to finally weigh it.

Weight...just the x-wing came in @ 125 lbs, that’s fuselage 60 and each wing about 16, just the base came in @ 65 lbs. so all in base and x-wing 190lbs. When finished I’m guessing she’ll be pushing 200. So when setting it up I have to pick up about 60lbs 4 feet in the air and then fit it into the stand, who thought up this design.
