1/8 Scale All Metal X-Wing Build

We have wings. Well, rough frames....mounted at least. That’s a milestone.
I just laid the piece I had to cut off back on, it will stay off as I work these wings out.
I know the wings get thinner the further out they go. But I have to wait till I figure out what thickness metal I want to use before I thin the frame.

looks great! I know you said you plan to just paint it black, but it would look good with a fresh coat of gray with red stripes etc, and then just let it weather naturally into the beat up paintjob we know and love. Either way keep up the fantastic work!

Made the inner frame for the stand from scrap that’s been outside by the shed for years. Plan on skinning it with some metal to make it flow. ( definition of “flow”...pretty).
Plus this is a test to make sure it does t all come crashing to the floor.

This is insane!! What do you think it will weigh when finished? PLEASE paint it accurately! It would be gorgeous.

Beautiful. And I have to jump in, explain your R2!?!?!? Never mind the size, I can't be the only person with metal expeience wondering about the dome?!?! Beautiful, keep going.

Paint scheme has changed, I do plan on going the more accurate route. Plan on brushing up on my air brushing skills, which I don’t have, but that’s never stopped me before. I plan on being as accurate as I can with the metal work, before I do body work on it to hide flaws.
The R2 dome has been the only thing I’ve had to purchase. I found a website that produces half spheres made of metal. Bad thing was they weren’t the size I wanted so I got as close as possible, one size bigger and one smaller. I split the larger into 4 sections to get the size closer and then welded it back together. It’s close but still just roughed out. The small one I didn’t use, just easier to make the big one smaller.
At the time I made the seat I really didn’t have any good pics to go by so I just took liberties. Can you guess what the seat cushions are made of?

Yep, nails they are. I’ve got plans for using clothes hangers later on, we’ll see if that works out.
I do plan on weighing this thing soon.

Ok, so I haven’t seen this question asked yet, but why outside? You’re creating a piece of ART. It has museum potential. I’d think about loaning it for display, dont hide it in your back yard.

Way to big and heavy to stay in the house, just always wanted one outside. My dream would be to finish it in time to take and display it at Star Wars Celebration in California, but that’s California and I live in Alabama. But who knows, long ways to go and this still could go horribly wrong. But I’m enjoying it.

It’s been in the mid 90’s for the last 2 weeks in Alabama with the humidity at 1000%. So I haven’t done a lot, but I did do a little on the stand today. Just for reference, it’s 46” to the top of the stand from the floor.

Very good work so far...yeah, those wings:rolleyes: Not the easy parts on that model. Love the feet/base btw!

Still working...but these engine inlets have more than tried my patience. 3 weeks of scratching my head. This is the fourth try and I’m going with it.
Not screen accurate I know, but working with metal and keeping weight down is hard.
Materials used ended up being several different size exhaust tubing reducers inside. I also decided to go with turbine fans inside the inlet cause it just looks more mechanic to me. Plus the larger the scale I think it just needs that. Outside diameter of the tube is 5”.
In the pics everything is still very rough with lots of body work and sanding to do. The vertical bar was just placed in there for the pic, so final size may change as was the blades. Mainly this was just a pic to show process is slowly still being made.
Best part of this....when finished....the turbine fans SPIN...yes...they are computer cooling fans!
