Y-Wing Building

I always thought that part looked like the cap to a tube of toothpaste! I even went so far to research mid-70's toothpaste tubes... no dice :wacko

Thanks! I think that's it. Here is some more:

The piece I am pointing at with "???" looks to be very crude. Minus this piece, it appears all the surface detail of the structure is accounted for. The rest is just flat faces... Still sure it's a kit part? And as far as what ILMers would have done, I at one time expressed bewilderment that they would have modified the dome-strut (Kettenkrad piece) the way they did. Why didn't they just use some other random part? I think it's sometimes harder to determine what they probably would have done vs what they would not have done than we think...

Oh sorry, that doesn't account for the rounded part with the "straps" on it, but we DO know it's a separate piece...

And that square channel, I am pretty sure, works out to be 1/8".

Jamie, the cylinder part (blue shaded with a rod attached to it?), is possibly from the Tamiya 1/35 Semovente M40.
Cant see for sure as ive only found built kits for pics, have you looked at this kit at all?
Not a dead cert, but maybe a lead...not sure!

Just looked again, you sure the M40 doesnt use the same chassis running gear? As the part looks right on both kits :wacko Good news is both are being re re'd by the big T this year....not sure if there is new tooling though!

My 76' catalog doesn't list the M40-75 18, (I don't know when Tamiya released this) just the Armato. Already having the kit on hand the date of the kit is dated 74'.

Ah i see Jamie, thanks for the info...ive got the M40 on the way to me, so ill post up and let all know if it is a viable sub, as the Armato is pretty rare (especially in a '74 box LOL) and only a limited run in its re're!

Well, my Semovente M40-75/18 shows two copyright dates on the sprues and parts. The Hull shows a 1976 as does the turret replacement sprue C, the main deck shows a 1974 (!) along with the bogeys and misc other parts that I'd wager are the common sprues/parts. The part in question is on one of the 1974 sprues, so I'd say that'll work.

I'm working on getting some pics of this one up anyway, so give me a few days and I'll post scans so someone with the other kit can definitively compare.

I've had the Semovente for years... never noticed that part. But since I lack good reference ... WHERE on the Y Wing is it supposed to go?

Yeah thats kinda what i though Ryan, the chassis/bogies are the same deal, and therefore were possibly the same molds.
The part in question is for sure the same, more ive looked it appears concrete!
Flintlock, i have no clue buddy lol, i neither have good Y ref, just found this while looking for ATST parts, but i tend to do that a lot, its easy this ID malarkey :lol

Malarkey...

You're a Britt, right Lee? A true brother I should say...:wacko:lol.

The part is obscured BIG TIME , it's located on the cockpit/firewall.

Ha, cheers Jamie, i just had nooo clue where it went, but knew the part, kinda like a chicken before the egg deal i guess :lol

Yes...for my sins, Iam...a Brit :lol

Cant say i blame ya Jamie, its gone to the dogs sir :lol OK well i too got my Semo in hand, and yup, same as Ryan stated, the drive sprues are indeed '74 stamped, and hold the correct part too!
Its amazing what you can find on a pic of built up Tank huh LOL.

Thought I'd show this off. Here are some shots of the CAD work I did on the Y Wing (studio scale). I switched to English (fractional) measurements, assuming that's what the ILM shop would have used. Before I was using metric, and then I switched to engineering units (1/50"). Now there's no more headaches concerning the angles at the back - the slopes of the angles come out beautiful! When everything comes out where it should be, it convinces me I've got it right...

Wish I had the money to get this milled...
