V3: Production Version Build

OK, finally moving forward with this build...

Today, I weathered the replica V3 clamp I picked up from Roman to make it look like a vintage 60+ year old clamp that has seen some production use.

Beautiful! Can I ask what you used to weather it? I love it!

Of course. There is a small blob of concrete in my utility room that gives me the random pattern needed to create the “pitting” seen in vintage clamps (I use the same patch of concrete for the weathering on the bottom of my V3 / V2 hilts.) Basically, I strike the clamp, randomly against this patch of concrete like the monkey from 2001 with his bone....

The camp was then subjected to “Easy-Off” cleaner, 3m pads, and steel wool to break down the shine.

Then, I sealed the parts into a plastic container containing ammonia to darken the areas of exposed brass.

Lastly, I hit the part with a black wash.

Here’s where I’m at so far. I’ve had to order the additional grub screws and will follow-up once I have them in-hand.

I can’t believe that this was done with a V2 builder’s kit! It’s almost unbelievable! The rings even look wider! I’d love to know how you did that!

Seriously awesome work!

Thanks.

No large-scale physical alterations were done from the basic builders kit (I am not attempting to create the misaligned rings, for example). If the rings look wider than the basic kit, that’s most likely due to photographic distortion of some kind.

this is indeed extremely nice and realistic. I don't know what you use to do your photos too but they are very nice, the grain is amazing on them. looking forward to more photos :)

ALLEY, will you be putting the V3 emitter on this that is being produced for this kit?

Yeah, the one that is on there now is the one I’m going with. I might gaffer tape the neck as there is some evidence that the neck may have been taped when it was used as the bladed stunt, by the time it made it to the US and was used as the bladed stunt for the Endor scenes of Luke vs. the Biker Scout and speeder bike.

This is fantastic - I love seeing "honest" aging techniques. I really dig this method (and have used it myself). And I'm sorry, but the guys who try to match the damage ding for ding with grinding tools... it looks totally contrived and unconvincing, and it looks terrible :(

Then, I sealed the parts into a plastic container containing ammonia to darken the areas of exposed brass.
Brass? Did Roman not make his clamps out of steel, like the originals?

I should clarify....in my haste I did not specify that my clamp lever is one that swapped out for Roman’s and appears to be a plated brass. That was the part that was exposed to ammonia to darken the pitted areas. Roman’s clamp band, etc are made of the same material as the originals, to my knowledge.

I don’t know the origin of these levers, I think they may be originals. I used the same type, to more dramatic effect, on my post-production V3 build. Here is it with the darkened exposed brass portions of the lever. I chose these levers from my parts bin as the have a closer to matte finish vs. bright chrome finish:

Love this build!
Are you planning to add the black tape (at least, I think it's tape) around the clamp?

No, it’s such an undefined detail, that also appears to have been temporary in appearance, that I will not be adding the booster tape (or whatever it may have been) to my build.

As a quick update, I am redoing the emitter on this build as I picked up one of the excellent V3-specific versions of the emitter offered in this limited run by Jorged123:

The basic base coloring of the new emitter is completed, but I have yet to weather it, paint it, or add the screw details to it.
