I would like to see them incorporate your idea Starbase101 whats a Tricorder without data. In addition to that perhaps small processor of some sort in order to play videos on the display. Just thinking big more goodies in the Tricorder may raise the price quite a bit, but hell i want one...L!Perhaps the discs will have $1, $5, and $10 markings, and removable for convenient access at a poker table.
It will be interesting to see how individual discs get removed, so a person isn't spending as much time picking up scattered discs on the floor when fumbling for the "How To Approach Girls" disc.
More seriously though, it would be cool if each disc contained "data" similar to a CD or SD-card causing different content to be displayed on the screen.
Because they're making a replica and not a prop. The prop was hand-shaped from wood and vac-formed. A real Starfleet-issued tricorder would be properly machined and symmetric. That is what they're making - an idealized version. I just hope there isn't a production screwup like what happened to the phaser handle. Why can’t they just leave it asymmetrical like the original prop?
I'm a bit out of the loop. What was the production screw up with the phaser handle?...I just hope there isn't a production screwup like what happened to the phaser handle.
Dimensions weren't followed per the CAD design and the handles ended up being too small.I'm a bit out of the loop. What was the production screw up with the phaser handle?

In Addition to what Starbase101 said, the prop is 55 years old and has been disassembled and put back together and is no longer the same shape it was when first fabricated. During inspection they noted where the panels have pulled away from the aluminum sides and they could see how it used to be. There’s no way they could (or should) reproduce their replica in the condition the original is in now.Why can’t they just leave it asymmetrical like the original prop?
It had no shape anymore at the end!If I was buying a model of Enterprise from “The search for Spock”, I would want it in the shape it was in at the beginning of movie and not the end.
