The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Beginning to sound like a Monty Python skit

There is only three insignia patches: Command, Sciences and Engineering.
And Medical.
Right! Four insignia patches: Command, Sciences, Engineering and Medical!
And Miscellaneous.
Right! Five insignia patches: Command, Sciences, Engineering, Medical and Miscellaneous!
"AMONGST our insignia patches, are such designs as Command, Science... I'll come in again."

Man, what did these guys have to do? Can't be good!!!! All the stuff that makes the Trekkian "utopia" possible no doubt. LOL

How many insignia patches were in TOS?

That bit in that episode has always bugged me. The episode was doing so well, and then they put in the lights bit, which is a direct lift from the 1984 film version of 1984, with Richard Burton (O'Brien) and John Hurt (Winston Smith) doing the exact same 4 lights/5 lights thing. In the book, O'Brien just holds up four fingers--they changed it to lights for the film. When I see a blatant ripoff like that, it takes me right out of the story every time.

It's the Greek letter Gamma, used right in the front of the FJ Tech Manual as the header for "General Section." Apart from that I don't think it means anything.

Ah geez, I should have figured it was from the Tech manual too. I have it in PDF, I need to look through it again.

So only Star Fleet Generals wore that. No wonder we didn't see it on the show. :p

I always considered officers like Uhura and Rand as Operations (or Ops), but Support Services works too I guess. I’ve just never heard it before. I wouldn’t consider them Engineering.

Uhura wore command at first, then quickly changed it, I think when it was clear she was going to be on the bridge behind Kirk all the time, I bet credits to Navy beans it was because they wanted to sell more color TVs.

I always heard it was because Nichols simply looked better in red.

She would have looked good in anything, but yeah I've heard that too and shes impossible to ignore in the background. I find it interesting Gilligan's Island also had red and blue shirts. They did start off in B&W though. Batman had a lot costumes that popped on color TV. I'm convinced there were some kind of industry incentives going on.
