The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Remember to disconnect the battery and leave it so for a while before pulling out the airbags.

Cool. Battery has been disconnected and removed for about three days now. If the airbag does not have an independent power source, I should be good :) I should probably do some internet research on it to be sure.

Here's the progress so far, after two hours of tearing down.

Pictures pictures pictures. Not for us but for you to know how everything came apart. Especially in the dash area. Also tape and marker and mark everything you unplug. Take a picture of it before you unplug it. I also put the bolts back in their holes so i know where they are AND where they went.

Yup, I'm taking pictures, shooting video, and tagging everything with white duct tape and marking it. I hope it's enough!

Episode 5 of ROTMM has just been handed off to Art. It should be on the RPF youtube channel shortly! Please keep an eye open, and let me know what you think.

I use similar cutting-edge technology such as masking tape and little colored dot stickers to mark stuff when I'm disassembling airplanes for avionics installations. A roll of tape and a Sharpie are two of the most frequently used tools in my box. :lol With your documentation and marking, I think you'll do just fine! :thumbsup

2 suggestions for the windshield....it looks like you have 2 hammers in your manly Crafts Man tool box....or keep the front seats bolted in and kick it out. This is assuming you don't want to sell it and want to have some fun....

then there's the "safe" way....remove the weather striping and use a putty knife to remove and loosen the adhesive.

If you don't heave something heavy through that windshield (or let me) I'm just never going to speak to you again.

On the car re-build shows, the don't call it demolition day for nothing.:lol

It'll give you another excuse to use the shop vac if needed.

Or you could charge a buck or two per swing and give others a chance to take a swing at it.

Sometimes the easisest way to remove a windscreen is to smash it. Not always the neatest, but definitely the easiest. Another way to do it, if you're game, is to punch a hole in the glass and use the reciprocating saw to cut around the inner area. Then just use a putty knife or a chisel to remove the remainder of the glass and silicone. You might want to enlist the assistance of a mate to hold a spray bottle to wet the glass and settle the dust as you cut though. Just my two cents worth.

Cheers,
Lawrie.

I already own a fifty pound sledge hammer, so it might actually be fun smashing it. I do NOT imagine that being terribly safe though. I'll have to think about it.

In other news, here's the latest photo. I'm still pulling apart the dash, and stripping the electrical stuff.

I'm Really enjoying this build, especially since you update regularly. I say get Lamm to make some shirts with your title but have the M designed like the Bat logo. Could help fund the project.

Those glued in windows can be a bear. The way i do them is i get a thin awl or screwdriver and try to make a channel in the window sealant so i can get a piano wire or thin guitar wire from the inside of the car to the outside on the edge of the glass. Then i twist each end around a couple wrenchs and saw the sealant all the way around, once you go around the windsheild it will come out. I will say the toughest i have seen are the early 911's They crack if you look at them wrong. The other way is to use a sawzall and just cut the whole roof off. This sound like the most fun way to do it.

Not much to report today, as it was a long day at work. The only news is that the tool I ordered online for glass removal arrived today. I will take a crack at removing the rear windshield tomorrow. I'll probably film it for the next episode :)

Is it a window punch? :)

I've always wanted to use one of those…..
